Im taking the 4th off regardless, but it falls like this:

5th:

If Obama wins and its an early night: Back at work on the 5th
If Obama wins and its a late night: Taking 5th off as vacation
If McCain wins in either situation: Taking 5th off as vacation

I expect to be up until all hours, checking on Senate and key House races.  I would imagine that the election gets called before midnight, possibly before 11 if we're lucky.  I'm expecting the 4th to be a catharsis for myself and so many others that you couldn't keep me from watching no matter what.  Also, I will want to see the crying of the conservative pundits on tv and the stunned disbelief on places like The Corner, Red State, Town Hall etc online.  If this thing goes down like I foresee expect me to be a very, very sore winner for about a week.

Carville and Begala implore Republicans to start playing the blame game.

Quote
The Republican Party is atomizing, and each faction must participate in Project BLAME. The neocons may want to blame the theocons. The economic conservatives will likely blame the big spenders. The conflagration will be so multi-dimensional we'll need a program to sort out the players. They will need to answer fundamental questions: What does it mean to be a Republican? Do Republicans support laissez-faire or nationalized banking? Do Republicans support a balanced budget or half-trillion-dollar deficits? Do Republicans want a "humble foreign policy" like George W. Bush, or preventive war against countries that pose no threat, like, umm, George W. Bush? Are Republicans the party of limited government or a vast Medicare prescription drug benefit? Are they wary of Big Brother or eager to expand warrantless wiretaps? Do they support Christian values or torture? Are they the party that believes that cutting-edge technology can shoot a missile out of the sky or the party that believes humans and dinosaurs walked the earth simultaneously?

The rumor is Isakson is gonna run for Gubna and Tom Price would theoretically take his seat.

Anyway, saw this yesterday:

(Image removed from quote.)

Just think - only one more tax credit and they can achieve their goal of having >50% of all tax filers not paying any taxes! Its a built in voting majority!!!

Writing welfare into the tax code - Change we Need.

1) You forgot about Dre Poland FICA.  Republicans always omit this, because it puts a serious lie to all their claims of an overburdened rich.

2) Earned Income Tax Credit.  Earned.  Hint, hint.  You only get it if you're working.  Calling it welfare is basically lying.

I don't like ripping stuff from PoliGAF but I thought it was interesting:

http://www.politico.com/playbook/1008/playbook471.html

The summary is that Republicans are beginning to abandon McCain.

McCain's latest flip flop against the 8 years of Bush is hilariously dumb.  If he didn't want to make allies with the hard right, he never should have abandoned the moderates to go to the hard right in the first place with his piss poor October Surprise.  He will find himself supported by neither, increasing the criticisms from the right wing about McCain, shaking the already frail confidence Republicans have over McCain.

I'm not a hopium distinguished mentally-challenged fellow but this is looking to be more and more of an Obama blowout than a moderate victory.  McCain is absolutely trapped: he has burned almost all his bridges, has little money left with no relief in sight, a VP who seems to be going more and more astray to protect her own future, his own party supporters turning their backs on him...

The bigger challenge will be if the Dems can secure a supermajority in the Senate.

Palin has no national candidacy future, certainly not in 2012.

If she has such ambition, she'll need to get out of the Alaskan governor's igloo and try a senate run. Do that for a few years and come back in 2016 (or later) when she can show more experience and when Americans will be at least more likely to believe she's not the talking point bungling airhead she has appeared to be during this election.

2012 will not allow enough time to rehabilitate that image.

Do they support Christian values or torture?

well, that one's easily resolved -- torture is the central christian value. i crudely summarize william empson's statement of the case:

jesus was tortured to death in expiation of human sin, this act of torture was the most important event in the history of the world, and if you don't acknowledge it, your undying soul will be tortured. it's unclear why the christian god was gratified by his son's torture, and really the whole thing stinks of some primtive religion of human sacrifice -- so the church came up with the doctrine of the trinity, in light of which it turns out that the christian god tortured himself to death -- and then tortured people for denying it

Let's here more about this John McLane.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This is one comparison John McCain won’t mind.

Quote
As Biden tried to tie McCain to President Bush this morning, he slipped and referred the Republican nominee as “John McLane." He immediately recognized the mistake, and tried to roll with it.

“I don’t recognize him anymore. I used to know him well,” he said, before acknowledging it was “a bad joke.” The crowd laughed politely, anyway.

Biden's starting to gaffe it up these last few weeks lol

The woman can't form a coherent sentence without a teleprompter. I cannot fathom how any self-respecting Republican can actually say she's a good candidate. She was good for the convention to rally the base, no doubt about it, but that was before she actually had to campaign. Since then, she has been nothing short of a trainwreck.

I dunno. In four years she'll have more experience and be more prepared than she is now. Plus with the way the primaries are set up she could easily make a lot of noise in the first four - Iowa, NH, Michigan, SC, Nevada. Caucuses are won by whoever has the most excited ground game, and that benefits fundie christians; Huck won Iowa for instance. Assuming Romney entered the race and wins his home state of Michigan, SC would go to either Palin or Huckabee once again due to the religious vote.

Who knows. Palin will definitely have the female vote on lock, similar to Hillary this year. But while Obama was able to combat that with an amazing campaign organization, I doubt any of Palin's challengers will be able to compete.

This has got to be the weirdest story of this election season so far.

Long story short- this morning there was a debate for the Kentucky Senate.  A GOP operative by the entertaining name of Richard St. Onge III placed a recording device on Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford's podium, apparently to catch him saying things while his microphone was off, for God knows what purpose.  But Lunsford found the device and took it with him and gave it a staffer, who then erased it and gave it back.  Which prompted the GOP to file a criminal complaint.

Huh?

Kentucky senate races are always dirty. I think Lunsford and McConnell hate each other. It's pretty hardcore how dirty this Senate race is.

I don't buy Palin as a big time candidate for president in 2012.

Yes, she'll have four years to acquire the (shallow, flawed) familiarity with the issues she'd need.  Lots of Republicans like her.  She's willing to do or say about anything.  These are pluses.

But assuming a McCain loss, she won't have a big platform.  What could she do as governor of Alaska to garner attention or build herself into (more of) a hero to movement conservatives?  It's too peculiar a state for that.

Fundraising is the biggest hurdle.  Romney would be campaigning for '12 as soon as the networks call it for Obama.  He's got much more credibility with the business wing of the GOP and has an organization to build on.  Palin doesn't have a network ready and hasn't shown any organizational talent so far (the Troopergate report makes her look pretty amateurish).

I think Huckabee's performance this cycle would be her absolute ceiling.  She's more likely a Fred Thompson, the alleged savior who flames out early on.

I dunno, Mandark.  I think that ironically enough Palin could raise a boatload of money using the Obama online method.  I mean, there's a shit ton of fundie nutbars out there who would be willing to give their money to their new favorite person.

But all of that is like three years away, and I maintain that as long as Obama kills bin Laden in the first year or two of his administration and that the economy yo yos back up he'll probably cruise to re-election pretty easily.

Fred Thompson was also extremely lazy and never really put in an effort.  He just came from the Reagan era and people latched onto that.

Palin is a different situation almost entirely.  She represents a younger generation of Republicans (well, she looks it and that is often good enough for the GOP), she is a Governor of a state, and she is a lot more ambitious than a guy whose campaigning skills involved little more than walking from one side of a place to another and then leaving.

A lot can happen in 4 years though.  After the elections, I just don't think it is the last time we'll be seeing Palin.
