Every thing bad that happens to Walt and Jesse is their own fault. Jesse, for instance is a dumbass. Just let it go. DON'T GO AFTER GUS' MEN. But nope.

And then in the end, it's Walt who kills them. Fuck.

Idiotic Duo.

Season 4 was pretty much the first time I actually started to like the show. It's a damn good season of TV, and they suddenly stop being such fucking idiots.

Yes. This.  I found the show entertaining before it but I didn't genuinely like what was going on.  I was curious more than anything.  It was intriguing.  But in Season 4 they all break out of their stereotypes and develop as characters.  It's glorious.  It's definitely some of the best writing I've ever seen in a TV show

So I started Mad Men, a show I watched a bit of with my brother when it first came out but never kept up with. Pretty good so far, with the second episode being especially good. It really reminded me of a point Tony makes multiple times in The Sopranos: the idea of the "strong silent type" who has no feelings. I've heard my mom and grandmother, and many other older people, claim ADHD and other mental or developmental disorders must have magically appeared relatively recently because they didn't exist "back in the day." Obviously that's not the case.

Also the casual sexism in the show is pretty hilarious

Mad Men is an incredible slow burner of a show. Paying attention to all the threads coming together with each season finale is just addictive.

So much fun!!!

That's the conclusion I've been coming to as well. There's not a single scary thing about the show, but the brothers are good company, and it's funny.

Yeah I always found it funny how my Dad and Grandfather would talk about all these "new" conditions and how men used to just shut up and be strong while my grandfather used to be an abusive alcoholic and my dad had to see therapists twice a week for his various conditions.

Pretty much. My only other complaint is

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Abu Nazir just going along with everything from Brody without a hint of skepticism (and while we're at it, why wasn't infiltration rather than assassination the goal from the start if it's the better option?) and then also spontaneously having Walker killed. Felt like some corner cutting there.

Series 5 Doctor Who has the best female partner (Karen Gillan) but I'm still unsure about Matt Smith as the doctor but that's probably due to how awesome David Tennant was.

Heh I started rewatching S2 last night as well. Ziggy is laughably insane but I know people that fucked up.

The season definitely starts slow as it goes through a "hey dude how are you? remember that case we did last year, oh man that was cool. anyway how'd you get this shitty new job?" phase. But once the pieces are all on the board it becomes quite amazing

It works for me because I know how all the pieces come together. But for someone watching the show for the first time, I can see how Season 2 would seem incredibly disjointed, and frankly, kind of a let-down from Season 1.

Yup. The first time I saw S2 I thought it was a bit odd early, but luckily by the third or fourth episode it got on track. It's probably the weirdest beginning of a non-first season of just about anything I've seen. But like The Wire in general, all the pieces fit together eventually. Sobatka is one of the very best characters in the show.

BET edits out the majority of the dock related scenes in S2, which I find hilarious and pretty sad at the same time.

Homeland

just finished the pilot, it's pretty good!  i initially avoided it because i thought it might be propaganda sexying up the federal government for civillian consumption, but it seems that they show the shadier side of what goes on in washington.  also this is the first show where they show a chick giving her snatch a mexican shower.  A+

The problem is that once you bailout like that, the audience won't trust you to ever go through with what the show is threatening to do. If the audience doesn't trust you then the suspense that you intended as a maker of the show falls flat.

How would an audience be kept in suspense if a show carried out all of its threats? In the end,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brody made the decision that living for Dana is more important than dying for Issa, a plausible resolution given his lack of zealotry.

On a practical level, Homeland doesn't seem like the kind of show that can keep introducing new villains every season, like 24 or Dexter, because of how reliant it is on great characters.

It would have been a bailout if the vest simply malfunctioned.
[close]

The idea of
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brody being an inside agent now doesn't really jive with his whole reasoning for being a terrorist. The bombing was personal retribution, it was representative of himself as a Marine in his own mind. Influencing policy and supplying Nasir info? That's just being a double agent terrorist.
[close]

It doesn't, but he was probably just
spoiler (click to show/hide)
bargaining to save his own life, something which Nazir should have realized. Maybe in Brody’s mind this alternative really does allow him to exact revenge, but without destroying his family in the process.

Plus Brody has the potential to do a lot of damage for Nazir by working closely with the VP. He'll have access to confidential information which he can feed to the terrorists. And obviously he can carry out an attack on him another time

I'm still baffled at the complete lack of any acknowledgement of the actual president; no US vice president, even Cheney, wielded the power Homeland's VP did; especially the idea of a VP ordering a CIA drone attack smh. I suppose the show runners left the president out because it could suspend belief; viewers would know Brody wouldn't succeed with his plan, as killing a sitting president on screen is a no no.

Downton Abbey Christmas Special

I liked it a lot, mostly because I was just glad to have one more long episode to watch before the nine month wait for more.

Thoughts:
-I'm glad that Robert finally knows about the dead diplomat
-I'm also glad the "will they won't they" of Mary and Matthew is over and they're engaged
-Interested to see where the Carlisle newspaper plot goes, especially with the attempts to clear Bates
-On that note, Bates  :'(  :'( At least he's not being hanged!
-Poor Anna too  :'(
-Ouija board stuff was fucking dumb but it wasn't a huge part so whatever
-Thomas is a fucking idiot, I hated that he ended up getting the job

Rewatching Twin Peaks.

All the crying is very cringy and the music while almost perfect has those annoying piano notes that drive it straight to melodrama street. Without the over the top crying (episode 3 now) and the shitty piano notes the show is still rock solid.

I'm watching it on my phone too, totally Lynch-not-approved.

Yea I thought it was good, although the Ouija shit was so stupid. It was a pretty dark episode for a Christmas special

spoiler (click to show/hide)
-I kind of was disappointed that some of the plot lines ended so early. For instance I would have liked to have seen Mary go to New York; I feel like she was going to get together with Matthew anyway, no need to rush things
-On the opposite side of things, I'm so tired of Bates drama. He's such a great character but the writers keep throwing drama at him for whatever reason. I feel like he's going to be found innocent eventually, so dragging this out annoys me.
-I thought Thomas had a great arc in S2. He's an interesting character I'd love to see more of from a personal level; we got a glimpse at his vulnerability in the first episode of S1, but that was it. The stuff with the dog was kind of funny, but I didn't like seeing him become the valet. Still, if it means the character will be developed more in S3 I'm all for it.
-I'm gonna miss Carlisle lol. Oh well, the actor is pretty awesome on Game Of Thrones though :bow

Waiting for S3 is going to be hard, but at least this episode tied up some knots and sets the table for things

I too was hoping they'd take Mary to NY. Maybe that would have made the show entirely Age of Innocence remix and they didn't want to do that. I like the line about finding a cowboy.
Best line goes to Maggie Smith: "Is that a promise?"
I think Edith could possibly have the most interesting plotline potential. She's grown a lot as a character, but is still on the outside looking in.
It looks like Sybil is coming back. Plus we get the 1920s. Of course, going to America at this time would have made that Mary plotline even better.
Daisy is so dumb

It's not that Americans are morons, it's more that the structures that rule over us - government, education, police, media - all need massive restructuring, but this is highly unlikely because the current status quo manages to put money in their pocket. Think about this, Obama considers The Wire one of the best shows of all time, he's a politician, he can't change shit, yet he recognizes the ills of the system. Not to mention, he's a part of that system.

The most apt description from the series is actually from Frank Sobotka:
