which nintendo platform is this exclusive to again?
I bet they backtrack and try to take GTA back to being about fun and not Oscar-quality stories.
CANT FUCKING WAIT
Watch them take out the open-world and go full-on linear action game.
That logo is horrendous.
Who cares? It's all about Saints Row 3.:rock
I bet they backtrack and try to take GTA back to being about fun and not Oscar-quality stories.I can't even describe how much I would like that to happen, but it's not like GTA IV sold LESS copies than the previous generation's entries.
The two DLC expansions were also much better than the main game
GTA: Hong Kong or NO SALE
Anything is possible but I highly doubt they would go that far back in the past unless its like for flashback levels or something. Normal (mainstream) people don't want to drive crappy old cars and listen to old timey music. GTA is know for being modern or at least close to modern. They already have LA Noire or RDR to explore other time frames.
Pass. Anyone who buys this is a sucker confirmed. In fact, can Demi make a custom tag for anyone dumb enough to admit wanting this? You can start with Himuro-Chan.

they've never done a straight 1970s gtaThis would actually be pretty cool.
Will you still have to click Left Trigger half way in order to free aim ?!?!?!?!?!?Wasn't there an option to disable auto aim entirely? I thought that's what I did but I can't remember now

>thinks Saints Row is a good game series :lol :lol :lol :lol
Am I being too cynical but the timing of this right around saints row 3 is way too coincidental.
Strengthening long-standing rumors for years that the next Grand Theft Auto would be set in Los Angeles or a fictional version thereof, a source familiar with the game told Kotaku today that those rumors are true. GTA V will be set in some version of L.A., bringing the famous franchise to a place that last got the GTA treatment in the series' top-selling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. (So much for our other dream GTA V cities.)
We're also hearing from multiple sources that the game will feature more than just one playable character. That would seem to be a natural evolution for the series. Following the release of the PlayStation 2's Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City, PSP games set in the same cities as those console games let players control a single new character apiece. Those portable games helped establish the idea that there's more than one life worth living in a Rockstar-made GTA city.
announce for 3DS - gather quotes for ninthings and sony fans - then 1 week later say "Sorry, we meant Vita"
I have a purely technical question: What’s the initial process of putting these games together? Does it start with you and your co-writers drafting out a structure? Is there one single room somewhere where it springs out of from?
The beginning thought is the place, and the time period. Which will really be a conversation between Sam, myself, Leslie Benzies, who’s the producer, and Aaron Garbut, who’s the art director. We’ll start discussing some broad ideas for the protagonist: He’s gonna be a gang kid, he’s gonna be an older guy who just got out of prison, he’s gonna be white, black, Yugoslavian, whatever it might be. Just sort of loose ideas for that.
From there, we’ll begin working on a story outline, a feature set, and some early missions, all at the same time. The story and the missions are the same thing, hopefully, by the time the game comes out. The missions tell the story, and the story shows off the features that the missions unlock. The combination of the cutscene and the action moves the story forward. The next bit of story unlocks the next core mechanic for you to play with. The experience of playing the game is also the same as going through the story. They’re not separate things.
The rest of it — the games are sort of big. There’s so many bits you have to be working on at once. You get the map guys working as soon as humanly possible, because the design guys can’t really do anything till there’s bits of map made to do it in. You have to work everything in parallel. Map-building, interior-building, character-building, writing, game design, animation: You want them all moving as soon as possible.
Grand Theft Auto III and all these games are massive, and you’ve described them as a real team effort. But are there any parts of these games that — for you personally, or you and your brother — feel particularly autobiographical?
I hope not. Hopefully it’s all a product of a wonderful communal imagination. The only one that really springs to mind is a character in Bully that was completely this kid I went to school with. The kid Gary, the nasty little bully, the main antagonist. He was exactly a kid I was at junior school with.
One last question for you: Before games like Grand Theft Auto III came along, it felt like players were fundamentally meant to see every part of the game. There were little Easter Eggs or secret levels, but that’s nothing to compare to the size of these open-world games, where even the most devoted player might not see everything. How granular do you feel like you have to get when you’re putting these worlds together? Where does the world-building stop?
I suppose we make it, then just do a bunch of passes on it, and try to find as many different forms of content that can be put in there sensibly, that will reward the player for exploring, if they’re that kind of person. And we build in to it the overall themes that we’re trying to push in the game — the ludicrousness of advertising, whatever it might be.
It’s something that’s hopefully enjoyable for people. It’s a way to experience amusing, entertaining, thought-provoking, idiotic, whatever-they-might-be little bits of content in a non-linear fashion, spread around this map and across all these ways that people are speaking: on the radio, and then in later games on the TV. It’s something that I think is interesting and potentially very powerful, but is totally unique to a game. We who make games, we’re looking for ways that games can do stuff that you can’t do in a movie, or you can’t do in a TV show, you couldn’t do in a book.
And that non-linearity is really key to that. You can actually be. It’s not just about doing the stuff — which obviously is great, working your way through the story as opposed to watching a story — but also the more passive idea of exploring this world, and just being there. Soaking up the stuff. Having your adventure in this place that doesn’t really exist. I think that’s really powerful and fun. We do as much as we have time for and can think of. We go a little bit crazy on that stuff, and are constantly trying to find new little things that people can discover.
You want it to feel like you’ve not seen everything. Like it feels like you’ll never know a city, really.

11/02 or rather 02/11 is this wednesday the day of the reveal trailer.
Set it during the 70's or the 60's counterculture movement and I'm sold.
trolling you guys is no fun
It's no fun if you just whip out the "Oh, I was just trolling, guys!" everytime you get caught saying something dumb. :smug
Graphically the game looks really nice (so you know it's the PC version) but I have serious doubts this game will be fun.
Good color. Much better than the bleak and dingy ass city of GTAIV.
Edit: I still think revisiting past cities is kinda lame.
lol maybe not a Hispanic lead. It's probably that middle age white guy.
people are guessing it's tommy vercetti
and revising old cities is great. LA in San Andreas really had no detail. PS2 era was pushed too hard. Now they can push 360/PS3 era hardware! and on the Xbox Loop, they can do it again!
Doesn't change the fact it's kind of boring to go there again.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING
I see Himu is already holding water for a dead franchise
I bet they backtrack and try to take GTA back to being about fun and not Oscar-quality stories.
i bet they don't, dan houser's too far up his own ass now as a "serious social commentary" writer

so? play MGS2. Gonna be a bait and switch.
would be hilarious. I remember people were upset at the first San Andreas trailer because it showed a black main character.

GTA has always had social commentary though, it's just that they went ape shit with realism in IV. Thankfully, the GTAIV dlc fared much better. I mean, you like Red Dead Redemption right? Who's to say GTAV isn't GTAIV with RDR improvements? That'd be awesome.
zzzz another repeated city,
zzzz another repeated city,
Just like in Saints Row 2?
San Andreas is the best sanbox game ever. This is going to become the best game ever.
Seems too soon to announce and release a major GTA game in 8 months. Hollywood gaming likes to sit for a year or year + half before release.
I hope it has outdoors environments and yetis

you could be right, but i liked the "throw dynamite into a hideout and listen to rustlers scream" parts way more than the "ah'm jus' a reformed criminul tryin' ta be a decent fambly man why's everbody pickin' on me?" parts, and i doubt gtav will weigh towards the former
maybe the taxi rides will be cool
if the realism is respected, half the hours of any day, the highway will look like a parking lot.

I'm glad we're going back to Los Santos, but this game really should be as big or bigger than San Andreas. If not disappointment total.

SA was too big. Missions where you drove from one end of the map to the other were distinguished mentally-challenged.
SA is still the only GTA I've never played :( I always hear how awesome it is, but I missed the boat and when I try to play it now it's so dated. Super ugly, shitty controls.
That's the version I try to play with an X360 controller :(
Still ugly, still controls bad.

I'm not trying to be mean or suggest anything, but did a main black character turn you off from buying it? because I know at least four people in real life that liked 3/VC and passed on San Andreas because you play a black guy. I remember showing the trailer to a friend and he started hyping up Driv3r as the real next GTA. Oh man did Driv3r suck big time.
Fall 2004 was nuts for game releases. GTASA, MGS3, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2 (if you only had a Gamecube lol), and other games.
I got up to the San Francisco city but gave up shortly after the Radio Controlled Plane mission. Never got to see Las Vegas :(

I got up to the San Francisco city but gave up shortly after the Radio Controlled Plane mission. Never got to see Las Vegas :(There's a really simple way to finish that mission, but it involves NOT FLYING. Just drive the RC plane around like a car, and it uses almost no fuel.
Rockstar has confirmed Grand Theft Auto 5 will be set in GTA: San Andreas' Los Santos, a present day, fictional version of Los Angeles.
GTA5's action will also take place in Los Santos' surrounding hills, countryside and beaches.
It will be the largest Grand Theft Auto game yet, Rockstar has said.
Rockstar mentions the game takes place in GTA's version of "Southern California", although there's no mention of whether GTA5 will also feature San Andreas' other cities as well.
Los Santos was only one part of San Andreas' huge map. The cities of San Fierro (San Francsico) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas) were also included.
"Grand Theft Auto 5 is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe," Rockstar founder Sam Houser has said. "We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."
The game's storyline will focus on the "pursuit of the almighty dollar" and will take the series' trademark open-world mission-based gameplay in a "bold new direction".
Online multiplayer has also been confirmed as returning, although there's still no word on release platforms or launch date.
Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.
A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty daytona in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.

SA was too big.
A poster claiming to be a games journalist for "a Playstation magazine in the UK" (presumably PSM3) has professed, on the GTA Forums, to having privileged information about the game. He says that magazine staff experienced 30 minutes of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V at the developer's Scotland offices.
It should be noted that everything below is rumor, subject to absolutely no validation whatsoever. Some of the things he writes do make sense, however, and should make for interesting discussion.
1: The game world is absolutely massive and will push both xbox and PS3 to the very limit in terms of what it has accomplished. Yes, the main city is simply Los Santos however is it AT LEAST 4 times bigger than Liberty City in GTA 4 and that is just Los Santos. The surrounding country side, beaches, etc are massive. For instance, we saw the main character ( an African/American, early 30's) travel by car from the center of Los Santos into the wildnerness and it took over 15 minutes. The views were incredible from farmhouses with cattle, huge wind farms, an oil refinery which appeared to be living and breathing with nearly 100 NPCs working on machinery, operating vehicles, lifting and loaded, etc, unlike the gas works in GTA 4 which seemed to only house a few NPC at a time. The forests are more beautiful than those in RDR and featured people camping, young NPC drinking and dancing around campfires, people riding dirt bikes and jumping over logs, streams, etc. The water effects, forna, plants, trees all looked beautiful.
2: The shooting mechanics have been greatly improved with animations for diving, climbing, rolling and crawling all added for better realism. The re-loading animations for new ammo also look cooler, less static.
3: There is much more climbable elements in the world such as ladders, overhand climbing, etc.
4: There are animals in the game from dogs to cattle but at this time it is not confirmed if you will be able to harm the animals. Rockstar were able to get away with it in RDR as it was a true depiction of the world in which the game was set. Allowing dogs/cattle to die in a game sent in current times may cause headaches with PETA. Its unclear if Rockstar were joking here.
5: There are planes to pilot and they can be crashed into buildings if you choose to do so....
6: Rockstar have included many, many more interior locations such as a shopping mall, college campus, police station, a huge hospital and there is also a vast underground sewer network which one mission later in the game involves a jet ski chase that culminates in a Fugitive-esque waterfall jump ( there are nods to the ridiculous but awesome Ballad Of Gay Tony missions)
7: The city is full of NPCs jogging, weight-lifting, hitting on women, being chased on foot by cops, shopping, washing cars, fixing fences, moving home, filling up their cars, etc.
REAL JUICY INFO:
1: Cars can be upgraded/repaired and it has been considered to have a car have fuel forcing the player to fill her up.
2: The dating aspect of the game is gone. You still have a cell-phone but only people you will meet in the game will call you to ask you to do a mission or to ask you to do something else before the mission.
3: Weapons include the usual arsenal you'd aspect but the flamethrowers, remote mines, laxer trip mines and claymores are included. It is possible now to pick up random objects in a street/buidling to use as a weapon. There is also a museam where it is possible to steal old age swords, axes, etc.
4: it is possible to rupture a fuel line and if you shot at the trail of gasoline it will lead straight back to the car blowing it up.
5: mini games such as bowling, darts, etc have all gone. You can play basketball, weight train, arm wrestle, gamble and cage fight, enter triatholons, water races, cannoing, ab-saling, rock climbing, base jumping, ski diving. More to be confirmed.
6: Character customisation is back but only in terms of clothing, body weight, etc. The player you start off which, much like CJ, can't be altered by race, age, height, etc.
7: Rockstar said burglary missions may return but only as part of missions and not on neigbourhood houses.
8: No children NPC at all. Ever.
9: There is now an ability to grab people and use as sheilds or in "hostage" situations.
10: The cops are much, much, much more realistic. If you kill somebody when you know there are no cops around you will not run the risk of a one star as often as you would in GTA4. The cops will use smoke and tear gas, dogs, riot gear and rams to knock down the doors of buildings you are hiding in.
11: You can enter some buildings and lock doors, push objects in the way to barricade.
12: You become better at things as the game progresses. If you only ride motorbikes then you will increase your skills, same as individual weapons.
13: Certain weapons can be customisable and some even home-made.
14: One mission involves breaking out a very familiar GTA icon from a previous game...
15: Torrential rain fall and sunshine and even tremors will appear in the game.
I'm glad we're going back to Los Santos, but this game really should be as big or bigger than San Andreas. If not disappointment total.
SA was too big.

Himu's trolling, they said they scrapped it.

Rockstar finally redeemed the GTA franchise.
I fail to see how another bad GTA will redeem GTA
Himu weren't you just up this games butt hole yesterday? I'm having a hard time keeping track.
You just don't get it.
I will never understand why people want such huge maps for crime sandbox games. What's the point? Most of the stuff you do in between missions is driving from place to place, with few, if any quests being introduced to you. Red Dead Redemption did it right in that the map was huge, but even if you were in the middle of nowhere, SOMETHING interesting was going down. GTA isn't like that. So you'll be driving for 10 minutes doing filler crap as opposed to anything substantial. It's not like an Elder Scrolls game or Fallout where walking in ANY direction for 5 minutes will get you a new quest, so what's the point of such huge, filler worlds and why do people get excited when they see them? The only thing you get, at most, are annoying missions where you drive for five fucking minutes just so you can start the mission. That's not fun, that's fucking boring.
Mafia 1 and 2 make you fill up the gas tank, but it never really matters because you're switching cars frequently enough.
I'm all for that sort of stuff in GTAV. It just needs a consistent tone. It's like how I was less bothered by repairing cars, malaria, etc. in Far Cry 2 because the game never abandoned the established tone. More RPG-lite stuff like RDR would be great.
Unpopular opinion : I preferred the top down 2d GTAs
This is purely speculation on my part, but I feel like Rockstar Leeds is considered the runt of the litter, just based on the relatively small success of their titles. CW was theirs, and despite fantastic ratings, it tanked. And though the "Stories" games sold pretty well, I suspect they sold less than Rockstar had been hoping.

CW tanked, but didn't Liberty City and Vice City Stories sell about 13 million combined?
Rumour – 2K Czech on Grand Theft Auto V, Mafia III
Mafia II developer 2K Czech is contributing to Grand Theft Auto V, VG247 has been told.
A source told us the Czech studio has been working on the game for almost a year, putting its cinematic expertise to work in producing animations for cutscenes and general gameplay.
The Rockstar-led project was announced in November 2011, but platform and release information is yet to surface.
The tech sharing goes both way, with Rockstar opening its secrets to 2K Czech. Our source tells us the collaboration is part of Take Two’s plan to turn the Mafia series into a major franchise.
2K Czech’s next game, Mafia III, has apparently just gone into full development after a year of thorough pre-production, in which the game’s concepts and tech were stripped back to basics and rebuilt.
Our source has no details on Mafia III’s intended release window or platforms, but noted that 2K was in attendance at the “Durango” developer’s summit in London, rumoured to be an insider reveal of the next Xbox console.
Mafia II released in August 2010 and received extremely divisive reviews, with critics praising its story, characters and richly-detailed world but criticising the gameplay.
When approached for a statement, 2K advised it does not comment on rumours.

“What is going on with GTAV?” – received via Mouthoff
We are very busy working on the game! Everything is going well, but the game is a huge project. We should have more information and some new assets for you soon.
“Why don’t you give us more news?” – received via Mouthoff
As we have said before, we have often had long gaps between asset releases on previous games and will continue to do so in the future. We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don’t do this because we ‘don’t care about our fans' 'don’t respect our fans’ 'hate GTA fans etc' – precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it. The only things we care about are that you enjoy the experience of actually playing the game and that we release accurate information. We just have not been in a position to show more of the game than the trailer and will not be for a while yet. We did, however, manage to sneak a quick screenshot out for you… it’s not much, but we thought it was pretty fun.
but please understand
please understand
-no furries getting beaten with dildos
-no pimps with jetpacks
-no luchadores in tanks

Can't wait for the poorly optimized PC implementationspoiler (click to show/hide):teehee[close]
GTA4's episodes, LA Noire, and Max Payne 4 have good optimization. So this will likely have good optimization as well.
SR3's pc port was great, man. It was the best version.
In any case, it was directed at GTA4. I know people with top of the line rigs who can only get 30 fps on MEDIUM on a good day with that game.

Hint: the actual game won't look anywhere near this good.
The answer is actually to continue mining the batshit insane vibe they had in GTA3 and Chinatown Wars; it's a feeling which works for the game. The answer isn't to try and be more consistent in the seriousness, it's to embrace the madness.
Feels like it's been forever since a GTA game was released. Eight years already since San Andreas? Time does fly.

But we already have other games that have done the madness better. Plus, I like variety. Being serious isn't the problem; it's being serious in a world that isn't serious - hence the disconnect.
But yes, Chinatown Wars :bow
Question: how come GTA is so chock full of doing missions for other people and not doing missions for yourself? You know how in Vice City where Tommy decides to go and demand protection money by busting all the shop windows in the mall? No one told him to do that. He just goes and does it. I wish GTA would have a central cast of characters who decide crap like that, instead of going random assholes you haven't known for five minutes who ask you to whack someone. Seems another torch Saints Row took from GTA; characters who do stuff on their own terms.
Still haven't played gat goes to hell or beaten sr4. :yeshrug I can understand why people like sr4 but it feels like a massive shark jump moment to me as someone playing the series since 1. I should beat it and get gat goes to hell as a goodbye because I don't think we're getting saints ever again.
Would kill for sr2 re-release with open platform multi
cant say i remember seeing the lost outside of the story missions. still the best death of a player character ever, solely bc of the troll level
Jetpack too. I'm surprised they're supporting this so heavily still. Gonna have to find another drop lobby again soon, this update hit me for like 50 mil lolYeah, they're still making a mad amount of money from in-game GTA$ Shark Card purchases.
There's a bonus of GTA$750K for signing in, and +$100K for each day this week… or something. If any of you guys are still playing it.
There are also two Challenges which unlock weapons in RDR2 if you're interested in those. Both are pretty easy.
I was constantly chased/killed and called a nigg.er when I played gta online. That's just as horrible as it is unsurprising.
I was constantly chased/killed and called a nigg.er when I played gta online.
Also I always try to end up in an empty server, or just force it. That way I can do missions at my own leisure, with no other people trying to fuck around.

Yeah, there's not a good way to force a solo server on console. Some of the basic VIP/non-warehouse content is available on Personal Server, but whenever I find myself alone on a Public Server, it's time to SELL ALL PRODUCT IMMEDIATELY!
I learned early on to only play in private/crew/solo servers, but in general, that's how I approach any online game.
Playing with randos has pretty much sucked since the PS3/360 gen.
My biggest disappointment is that there's no integration between online and single player. You should be able to use your character as one of your team mates during the big heist single player missions and then use the money to buy stuff for them back in online.
i could do collectathons, but those gold medal trophies will make sure i never ever get a platinum. doing a handful of gold missions would be one thing, but you basically have to replay the entire game repeatedly to get 70. hell, in gay tony i think you do have to do every single mission. the repeated chatter alone would drive me insane. good luck man.
Are you actually having fun doing this? It sounds miserable.
this has inspired to me to try get at least all the ufo parts and scrap letters (i'm never going to get gold on all missions), you see so much more of san andreas going after these collectibles
I swear the rockstar website has an interactive map based on your save/account that shows what you did or didn’t collect, as well a 100% checklist. Been 7 fucking years though, so maybe I’m misremembering.
I haven't played the game in a couple of years but I think there was a couple of updates. Mostly boring stuff like stealing cars for Simeon. There’s a heap of stuff that’s 1-2 players, but this is specifically solo.
