I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available. We are conducting an open call for US based participants* for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community. As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards.
Much like we did last year, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag. Once you complete the survey that is presented to you, the Connect site will provide program related updates and you will receive a mail once the selection process is completed.
A couple of points before you head off to register:
*
We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.
*
This opportunity is open to Xbox LIVE Members in US region only*.
To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.
*
While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.
*Due to disc distribution limitations, this beta it will be limited to residents of the United States only.

hmm...
Maybe they will use DVD full capacity(8.5GB) or maybe some different higher capacity format(readable by 360 DVD)
Probably just different DVD space utilization...probably
Tough times for pirates ahead >:(
Bold part tells that people will get some new disc to test
-
Maxy scared... can't wait to get my free copy of Halo

Oh well,it was fun while it lasted

I registered. We'll see if I get selected.

That's it?
MS sure is boring these days.
-
It would be kind of cool if they had come up with a new higher density DVD-9 discs to give them extra space kind of like how GD-ROMs were higher density CDs for the Dreamcast.
Or more likely, a new formatting/file structure to reduce that ~2.0GB something overhead that 360 games have.

I signed up :hyper

Wait, huh? They're going to do a software revision to change what their optical discs can read?

Hacking scene says this
MS will introduce xgd3 – this will add more ap checks, cvi (content integerity) checks, increase the disc size and adds a new layer for protection issues – all in the 20500 sdk! bring it on! :)
Apparently everything is detailed in new SDK
Badly translated stuff from unknown sources
Now you ask what it is exactly? Microsoft will introduce the so-called XGD3 disc formats from around late April / early May.
Currently, the XGD2 (Xbox Game Disc 2) formats in use.
The disc image will always have a fixed size of about 6.8GB net and as such are limited to this maximum limit.
The format offers something XGD3 about 1GB more memory (also net) and reached thus roughly 7.8GB.
This 1GB available to developers of course. However, this new hash checks and anti-piracy measures are used.
This XGD3 disc image (if one can read in the conventional way),
cannot be burned to a commercially available double-layer discs, because they are outside the size capacity.
During pressing of the discs in the press shop are virtually forced validation data to the extreme edges of the disc,
which on the one hand, the verification, on the other hand, as an anti-copying system,
since these sectors are not to describe blanks, not to mention the fact that Brenner these do Außnahmesituationen can only describe.
Microsoft reached so many years, an almost sure way to stem the Kopierbarkein.
This is especially which are now contained to a plague which has become piracy.
Only JTAG owners need not imply any idea of what to do next. Text of flying short shrug their shoulders and jump to the next topic.
For everyone else this means, however, that in future, first no more games can be copied.
(Personally, I welcome this step, the longest was necessary in some form!).
The introduction is so well established, however, also certain that we can expect from almost all programs,
the new version that can deal from now on with the XGD3. On the hardware side the way,
no interference is expected. XGD3 discs will work with all previously released (and future) models of the Xbox 360.

What, people can't just overburn? A way will be found around this in time.
-
Is there really no other new features announced?

6.8 GB...but i saw some games at 6.9 installed

Crysis 2 is 5.5 GB

That's disgusting. I haven't been following any of this but what the reason to deny them the extra gigs in the first place?

Security stuff mostly, some rather large video partition i think

Aaaagh. That's from a German source, isn't it. If you want to you can PM me the original text and I'll see what I can do to translate it into something usable. My English language skills may reside on preschooler level, but I bet I can do a better job than fucking Babelfish. :yuck

I think that the source is some warez site(possibly private),somebody used google and copy-pasted it.Anyway there would be no need to translate for me,I can read German.

Update: Thank you for your interest in the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program! Sorry, at this time we are no longer accepting registrations for the program as we have reached our target audience volume. Please be on the lookout for additional opportunities in the future to participate in Xbox LIVE Update Preview programs. For those of you that have successfully completed registration we will be reaching out to you once we have completed the selection process for participation – within the next 2 weeks. You can check on your status my referring to your Connect Dashboard page and the icon in the upper right corner.
If you see Xbox LIVE Update = Pending then you have successfully registered and now you just need to wait for a follow up mail.
-
So companies can store more on disks. Great.
Now, how about letting folks install games with multiple disks and having to keep disk one in the drive?
Also, hope the copy of Halo: Reach isn't digital. Would be cool if it was one of the CEs.
They are giving you reach on the new discs to test the update
-
Oh, cool. Maybe it'll come with the DLC?
:lol I'll eat my hat if they give away the map packs with this thing.
-
Oh and I don't see Xbox LIVE Update = Pending on in the Connect Dashboard so basically I filled out those forms for nothing. Awesome.
Yeah I don't see it on mine either and I applied all most as soon as the post was put up on Major Nelson's blog. I hope that doesn't mean I don't have a chance. Really I entered it just for the free copy of Reach. I never actually bought it. I just went game fly with it for quite awhile.
I assume whatever the test disc is, they would want to test out something with nearly full capacity on it with the new limit.
-
Yeah, I just found it. You have to go into directory and click "View Connect products currently not accepting feedback". It should be there and say pending.
Oh okay. Now I see it. Yeah the instructions were misleading a bit.

it'll be funny if someone gets that copy before this update is official. the new info on the update pretty much confirms that this copy of halo reach is using the new file structure, which probably means it won't be playable on any consoles outside of the preview update for now...unless you're in the DISC group

My status isnt changed... guess I'll have to pirate it...

Due to the nature of this update we will be splitting the Xbox LIVE Update Preview audience into two separate segments. This means we will have some unique scenarios associated to each group so that we can get the test coverage we are seeking for this update. On your console, once it is properly registered into the program you will be able to see the ‘Xbox Beta Channel’ and the first slot will also identify the AUDIENCE you are registered into.

You can only go online with the console you signed up with, if you apply the update to another console it won't be able to go online until the update is out for everyone. So basically it's a non-issue unless you have more than 1 console that you regularly play on.
it says i'm in the Live group but i never got an email and i see nothing different on my console. what am i supposed to do?
I just turned on my Xbox and got prompted for the update. I never got an email either.

The next time you sign in you may get a prelim update. Nothing is really noticeable or different other than a blade says xbox beta. Nothing is really different.
-
hm. I logged in and I don't get anything about an update and nothing is different. any ideas?
-
they're probably rolling it out in waves instead of all at once. you'll get it eventually.
-
Guess the rest of us have to wait until the disc comes to try out the new update. :yuck
-
i'm so impatient with updates :lol I'm going to spend every free hour or so turning on my 360 checking to see if I get it until I do get it.
-
Some people got the Halo disc in today. Appears to come via fedex
-
comes with no manual and no label except stating it's confidential software and a warning that it won't work on other consoles or some crap
lol at everyone trading their copies in
-
It should work on any console, updated with latest dashboard(on disc)
-
lol ya
i just got the disc too
-
So much for my master plan to trade this in at Amazon for some store credit. :'(
-
Just got mine from fedex too. The ONE time I buy a Halo game and I end up getting a 2nd copy for free. smh
-
Mine came in. Will be nice to play Halo this evening. Haven't played Reach in awhile.

I'm in the Live update group and yesterday i still hadn't received the update when I turned on my 360 :(

Hopefully. If not, I wonder if there's anything I can do. Like calling them or something.

Got home and got the update! I also have my disc! W00t!! Even though I already have reach I'm super excited.
However, I just noticed a dark spot on my tv. wtf :( bah
-
played about a hour with the new disc. the disc itself looks like a blu-ray, it's translucent etc.
the game was even blurier though :(

Also update is flashing DVD firmware for certain drives
-
Got my DVD. :-[
I don't know what I'm supposed to do next though. :-\
-
The thing is that you can't rip(copy) 360 games using PC.You need 360 flashed with special firmware connected to the PC...360 reads the disc,PC is storage
It could be a trick...
Can't burn 10 GB on 8.5GB disc.Updated 360 would still read it normally.

Even before that new app smell has worn off from Hulu Plus, Microsoft will launch its annual spring update for the Xbox 360 Dashboard. Images sent to Joystiq by a Microsoft tech support employee reveal that the next Dashboard update will begin rolling out on May 19.
According to the documents, the update will be distributed in six separate waves between May 19 and May 30 "to ensure a high quality deployment." Additionally, while not technically part of the automatic update, Avatar Kinect is listed for a May 27 arrival as a separate download.
Aside from offering support for the new Microsoft disc format -- which will "be used in future game titles releasing later in 2011" -- the spring system update will enable PayPal support on the console, extending the payment option "to new international markets." PayPal will be "the only user facing feature" of the update.
Update: Microsoft tells us, "We have nothing to announce."

According to news from Kotaku, the new Xbox 360 firmware upgrade arriving imminently is incompatible with "a very small number" of consoles, and will prevent certain games from running on the console. The good news is that the platform holder will replace these machines with a brand new Xbox 360 S with 250GB hard drive.
It's a remarkable story, with Kotaku inferring that the new XGD3 disc standard - which adds 1GB of useable data to 360 DVDs - may not be compatible with a certain percentage of Xbox 360 DVD drives. However, the truth behind this incompatibility appears to be somewhat more involved. Since the arrival of the beta version of the new dashboard, hackers have been reverse-engineering it and finding a number of surprising additions never seen before in previous upgrades.
Firstly, this new release is the first that will actually see the drive firmware being rewritten by the Xbox 360 itself. Any one using a current hacked DVD drive will find that updating to the new dash instantly kills their ability to run pirate software, with the hacked code completely expunged from the DVD drive. Microsoft has employed a wide range of DVD drives in its machines from launch - the best guess is that not all of them can be flashed directly, necessitating a swapped console.
This new firmware doesn't just open up the additional 1GB of space previously set aside for the outdated, compromised security scheme - it features a completely brand new anti-piracy mechanism. In the past, previous attempts to foil piracy (such as AP 2.5) only worked on certain drives, with the feature disabled if you had older hardware. With the new system, it seems that the anti-piracy measures are so deeply embedded that they cannot simply be skipped in the same way.
We've also heard a number of reports that the new security protocols go beyond simply updating the dash. Multiple developer sources have told us that Microsoft has upped its game here significantly, and is now calling on studios to help get involved in combating Xbox 360 game piracy. According to this information, new APIs are being worked on that programmers can add to their titles which perform additional scans of the DVD during gameplay, not just when the game is booted as is currently the case.
Burned copies of Xbox 360 games are not 100 per cent identical to the originals, so hacked DVD drive firmware masks the differences with on-the-fly patching. Microsoft's hope is that in-game checks will be far harder to isolate and patch, and with control of these features in the developer's hands, pirate copies of games could even be "downgraded" into playable demos - for example, they could become non-functional after a couple of levels' play.
XDG3 is clearly a big deal for Microsoft - as evidenced by the company effectively giving away free Xboxes to ensure compatibility for all its userbase - but whether its new anti-piracy measures will be enough remains to be seen. The firm's last effort - AP2.5 - was dispensed with in a matter of days, and already drive firmware hacker "commodore4eva" is claiming that he has defeated the new countermeasures introduced in the beta dash...

Wait, what? MS is going to give away new, better 360s for people who own crappy incompatible ones?
-
Wait, what? MS is going to give away new, better 360s for people who own crappy incompatible ones?
Yes.Apparently they can see that in advance through Live/or you get some unique disc unreadable error.
Microsoft has confirmed reports that some Xbox 360 consoles are not compatible with its new Xbox 360 firmware upgrade, and advised those affected to get in touch.
"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," Microsoft said.
"This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console."
The console manufacturer urged those having problems to get in touch at www.xbox.com/support/contact "so we can verify if the console has been impacted".
Microsoft will replace borked machines with a brand new Xbox 360 S with 250GB hard drive.
The new firmware is thought to prepare the Xbox 360 for use with the new XGD3 disc standard, which adds 1GB of useable data to 360 DVDs.

Same!

That Halo Reach disc they sent worked on my 360, so I guess mine isn't incompatible. I'll rid myself of this 20GB harddrive someday. :'(

I had some problems with Halo Reach's textures and Rock Band crashes alot so maybe I have one :-X

My Xbox 360 can't play no games since the update, I'll be taking one of those slims.
Really?! Wow, congratulations, I guess!
-
My dashboard takes a few minutes to sign in sometimes and I keep getting a weird glitch where I can't turn off my controller. I hold down the guide button, hit turn off controller and nada. Still on and still works. I posted the glitch in the xbox connect site but it was immediately changed to resolved and then closed so I guess they know about it and the official update might fix it? No problems playing games though.
-

Really?! Wow, congratulations, I guess!
No but my 360 has been pretty funky since the update. Weird freezes, dashboard taking forever to load (sometimes not even loading), hard crashes on games I know work, trouble launching XBLA games while playing disk games. It's pretty fucked but I'm sure none of this will fall under xbox replacement and I wonder if I should just be all "fuck ya'll, shit is busted".
I'd reckon that my 26 hour (holy fuck, thought it was 18) Assassin Creed: Brotherhood playthrough is about an hour of freezes and crashes. Bulletstorm froze a lot too.
If you think you can link it to the update, it the problems are coincident with the update, you might try to swing that past Xbox support. I'm sure they're being called by every mouthbreather and his brother right now for a freebie, but it's possible it might sync up with their known symptoms...?
