Yeah, but deserves its own thread.
I normally shut up when someone I don't like died, cause I'll wind up being either dishonest or dickish, but in this case? Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Would suck if he just died of old age
We found the tomb where he was buried 4 years ago and bombed the shit out of it.

Well this is a funny thing to end the day with.If by funny you mean THE GREATEST DAY EVER.
I know how little this means in the big picture, but pretty dramatic stuff nonetheless, especially with having the actual body.
I know it's selfish to hope that a big event like this could be exploited to advance some other agenda, but...spoiler (click to show/hide)wouldn't it be awesome if they brought back Rubicon for another season?[close]
man, some people can't have a little bit of happiness from this announcement. already seeing "at what cost blahblahblah" among twitter peeps. Let people be happy for just one night then go back to bitching tomorrow

Breaking: Donald Trump to hold press conference congratulating himself on forcing President Obama to find and kill Osama Bin Laden.
also crazy to hear that there are reports now on CNN that he was practically hiding "in plain sight".

On one hand, I'm glad they got him because he's a evil terrorist plotting to kill innocents. On the other hand I don't get the sentiment that's going around that the war is over or some major historic event occurred. You take one terrorist down and another takes their place. There's still going to be terrorists and we're still going to be fighting them for a long, long time. +1 for America though.
More importantly: how will this affect the Canadian election tomorrow?
:lol

It's not historic for any larger trends. Just for what it is...long-delayed justice for one of the greatest crimes committed in American history.

Eh, you can cover it with as much pomp and bullshit as you want, but really this changes nothing. Just means he'll go down as a martyr to a whole new generation of terrorists.

Hey, that's not in the no-man's-land border region I've been hearing about for years. wtf Pakistan?
Seriously though. If people would read about the efforts to find him made by both presidents, it's pretty clear that Obama was much more focused on his capture or killing than Bush was at the end of his presidency.

I have a hard time taking Barack Obama seriously describing any military actions or objectives. The Obama Admin taking credit for finding and killing Bin Laden would have been like the Truman Admin saying they were solely responsible for winning WWII. I seem to remember presidents named Roosevelt and Bush.................

We don't care. He was a mass-murdering asshole. We wanted him dead. He is dead now. It's not like anti-terrorism measures will stop either.
Boogie: It'll be interesting to find out who was sheltering him. Actually, it'll be interesting to see whether or not we're told.
So basically America, fuck yeah, right?
osama bin laden is dead but obama is still president...atleast half the problem of the us is gone..hopefully obama wont be pres to around to much longer
atleast they [McCain and Palin] werent the first us citizan in there family. our pres now is muslin. and he dad and mom werent born here. he changed his middle name to husan.
look up the meaning of that name
but to be correct his middle name means in honor of iraqs 5th president who had that same middle name. why would he change it to that? we are fighting with them

VERY curious about the cooperation/knowledge level of Pakistani authorities here.
Was it a mirror-image of Obama's campaign talk, of the US having actionable intelligence without assistance by Pakistan, and giving the word to go in?
Or did Pakistan actually give real assistance and cooperation in the matter?
"muslin"

Oh, internet ...
Hell, can we even use "Pakistan" as synecdoche for Pakistani security forces? I wouldn't be surprised if one faction was hiding Bin Laden and another faction helped or felt forced to help. At this point, about a billion different scenarios wouldn't be surprising any more.

Does your "friend" know that Obama's mom is a white lady from Kansas?
I've also read a comment by a friend of my cousins downplaying the importance of Obama in this (all the military, Obama just had to sign a paper). The way this is spinned seems way too obvious.
And my conservative friend on Facebook has already let us know his thoughts on the subject:A conservative praising Roosevelt...Progress!QuoteI have a hard time taking Barack Obama seriously describing any military actions or objectives. So...basically, Bush deserves all the credit? :O
Seeing all the people outside of the white house celebrating is very heartwarming
According to U.S. officials, two U.S. helicopters swept into the compound at 1:30 and 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Twenty to 25 U.S. Navy Seals under the command of the Joint Special Operations Command in cooperation with the CIA stormed the compound and engaged Bin Laden and his men in a firefight, killed Bin Laden and all those with him.
But, on the other hand, what is the difference between making celebratory posts on that fact in front of our computers on the internet, as most of us are doing, and walking outside and doing so with other people IRL?
Best joke yet:QuoteOsama shouldn't have used his real address for PSN.
John McCain's secret plan to get OBL was to lose the election.

I'm pretty left-tendencied, but I'd be hard-pressed to feel bad about taking out the founder of Al-Qaeda. I'm happy he caught one in the face, though I'm surprised they buried him at sea. Makes me wonder when the conspiracy theorists will start spouting.

As far as the politics side of it on a personal level I don't overly like to give political points to either side when something like this occurs. It's too easy to play political football with and it over simplies these things. Like the way Reagan was credited with single handedly tearing down communism in revisionist history and all that other stuff.
I will admit I take some pleasure from certains corners of people with all their muslim and not a citizen crap and look who's watch he was killed under. It would be nice if neither party had a lock on being a party of patriotism and security but until then this will be a nice thing to rub in their faces.

Why are all you people celebrating this like it's some major thing? Murder was committed. What happened to a trial? Why has Obama murdered Osama and didn't give him a fair trial?
This forum disgusts me for advocating murder.

Have you watched the news? The SEALS were ordered to take him alive.
And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.
Yawn. Your act is thin... and I don't tolerate thin.

How is it thin? I'm sorry I don't stand right up for murder. There is no reason why Osama wasn't captured alive.
So? We're the most powerfull nation in the world, they should've allowed Bin Laden to submit and stand trial, not outright assassinate him. Messy move by Obama.
Bullshit. It is, in fact, possible to capture people. Even armed people. Saying "EITHER HE DIES OR HE GETS AWAY" is completely inaccurate.
They didn't just randomly raid houses looking for him, you moron. :lol

He still didn't get a fair trial either, so I guess it's okay for Obama to just shoot you up if you did a crime without a trial. Cool.

Obama ordered the capture. The SEALS landed, Osama's men retaliated with force, using HUMAN FUCKING SHIELDS to protect the mass-murderer. Osama escalated things. His death was just a result of the operation.
Besides, you truly think that man would get a FAIR TRIAL? Are you fucking serious? It would be a bigger joke than Saddam's. He would be dead quicker than Hussein was.

When Athar and his friends realized who the target of the half-hour raid was, they were shocked. "I don't know what to say," says a visibly incredulous Durrani. "What does one say in these situations?" For years, he had heard of Bin Laden's name. He had heard that he might even be in Pakistan. "We never thought he would be here, though." The raid itself seems so surreal as to merit a fantasy comparison. "It reminds me of the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that I play on my Xbox."
When one of Osama bin Laden's most trusted aides picked up the phone last year, he unknowingly led U.S. pursuers to the doorstep of his boss, the world's most wanted terrorist.
That phone call, recounted Monday by U.S. official, ended a years-long search for bin Laden's personal courier, the key break in a worldwide manhunt. The courier, in turn, led U.S. intelligence to a walled compound in northeast Pakistan, where a team of Navy SEALS shot bin Laden to death...
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=13512344 (http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=13512344)QuoteWhen one of Osama bin Laden's most trusted aides picked up the phone last year, he unknowingly led U.S. pursuers to the doorstep of his boss, the world's most wanted terrorist.
By mid-February, the officials were convinced a "high-value target" was hiding in the compound. President Barack Obama wanted to take action.
"They were confident and their confidence was growing: 'This is different. This intelligence case is different. What we see in this compound is different than anything we've ever seen before,'" John Brennan, the president's top counterterrorism adviser, said Monday. "I was confident that we had the basis to take action."
Options were limited. The compound was in a residential neighborhood in a sovereign country. If Obama ordered an airstrike and bin Laden was not in the compound, it would be a huge diplomatic problem. Even if Obama was right, obliterating the compound might make it nearly impossible to confirm bin Laden's death.
Said Brennan: "The president had to evaluate the strength of that information, and then made what I believe was one of the most gutsiest calls of any president in recent memory."
Obama tapped two dozen members of the Navy's elite SEAL Team Six to carry out a raid with surgical accuracy.
Before dawn Monday morning, a pair of helicopters left Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan. The choppers entered Pakistani airspace using sophisticated technology intended to evade that country's radar systems, a U.S. official said.
Officially, it was a kill-or-capture mission, since the U.S. doesn't kill unarmed people trying to surrender. But it was clear from the beginning that whoever was behind those walls had no intention of surrendering, two U.S. officials said.
The helicopters lowered into the compound, dropping the SEALs behind the walls. No shots were fired, but shortly after the team hit the ground, one of the helicopters came crashing down and rolled onto its side for reasons the government has yet to explain. None of the SEALs was injured, however, and the mission continued uninterrupted.
With the CIA and White House monitoring the situation in real time — presumably by live satellite feed or video carried by the SEALs — the team stormed the compound and entered the room where bin Laden was hiding. In the ensuing firefight, Brennan said, bin Laden used a woman as a human shield and returned fire. The SEALs killed bin Laden with a bullet to the head.
Eerie Links Between 'Harry Potter,' Osama Bin Laden; Why Movie May Benefit
3:47 PM 5/2/2011 by Gregg Kilday
While Warner Bros. has never pushed the comparison, the entire Potter saga -- both the books and the movies -- has had an inevitable subtext, colored by the events of 9/11.
While Hollywood scrambles to figure out ways to exploit the death of Osama Bin Laden on screen, the first movie that could actually benefit from the news of the terrorist’s death is likely to be the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which Warners will release on July 15.
While Warners has never pushed the comparison, the entire Potter saga -- both the books and the movies -- has had an inevitable subtext, colored by the events of 9/11.
While the first volume in J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series was originally published in England in 1997, the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in November, 2001, just months after 9/11.
It set up the ongoing conflict between Harry, the young, orphaned wizard, who gradually discovers his powers, and the malignant force of evil, Lord Voldemort, who is bent on destroying him. First referred to only as “He Who Must Not Be Named,” Voldemort is introduced as something of a formless boogie-man -- not unlike the mysterious Osama -- but then, over the course of the series, takes on more and more of a physical presence until in the last volume he and Harry go head-to-head in a final, cataclysmic battle. PHOTOS: Harry Potter and other anticipated summer blockbusters
For a generation of kids who grew up reading Rowling’s books and watching Hollywood’s big-screen adaptations in the shadows of 9/11, there have been inevitable echoes of the real world in Harry’s sometimes reluctant quest to defeat Voldemort.
Back in 2004, a poster on mugglenet.com made some of it explicit, comparing the Death Eaters to Al Queda and noting of that “just as Voldemort was shaped by his mother’s death and his father’s abandonment, Osama was shaped by his personal struggle between Western pleasures and Islamic discipline.”
And just as Harry is known in the books as “the anointed one,” a number of President Obama’s critics like Rush Limbaugh have frequently dismissed the president by disparagingly referring to him as “the anointed one” as well -- though on Monday, even Limbaugh had praise for how Obama orchestrated Osama’s demise.
Mild spoiler ahead, so stop reading if you don’t know the outcome of the final book...
Meanwhile, in the wake of Bin Laden’s death in a mansion near Islamabad, a meme has already popped up on the web, noting the weird coincidence that Osama and Voldemort both died on the same day, May 1. But true Potter fans have been quick to point out that’s not quite true: When Harry and Voldemort actually finally come face-to-face in the Battle of Hogwarts, in the books’ chronology the date is really May 2, 1998.
Of course, even without an end to Bin Laden, the final Potter movie is already on track to be one of the biggest movies of the summer. The franchise has already grossed more than $6.3 billion at the worldwide box office.
But Bin Laden’s death is now likely to give the movie an extra emotional resonance for the Potter generation, and that could translate into an even bigger box office bonanza
I dun get it
Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumseld:
"The man who once called the United States "a paper tiger" and issued a fatwa to "kill all Americans" believed that our nation would not strike back if provoked. Today that man, responsible for the deaths of 3,000 Americans on September 11th, Osama bin Laden, is dead......All of this was made possible by the relentless, sustained pressure on al Qaeda that the Bush administration initiated after 9/11 and that the Obama administration has wisely chosen to continue."
Why did the most powerful and wealthy country on earth would order an execution on someone without giving them the option of surrender to a fair trial with the overwhelming likelihood of the outcome of that trial being death?Whoa! Methodis is a troll character, confirmed. No-one is this stupid IRL. I wouldn't try to frame as a left-right political issue, but yeah, if you don't believe in the death penalty, then I could see this being an issue for some people. Regardless of my kooky liberal leanings, I'm glad they did it and have tons of respect for everyone involved.

Why exactly did McCain not want to go into Pakistan?
The back-and-forth went basically like this:
OBAMA: I'd authorize forces to go into Pakistan if we could get OBL.
MCCAIN: You can't say stuff like that! Pakistan's a sovereign country!
OBAMA: So you wouldn't?
MCCAIN: Well, I wouldn't publicly admit that I'd do it...

I picked up my bags but my chemistry teacher stopped me. He said we had more important things to do and didn't even let us watch TV.
OBL: Ironically enough, at the end of a field exercise prepping to deploy to Afghanistan. Over the loud speaker where they announce simulated rocket attacks they said something like, "This is not a drill. Osama bin Laden has been killed." "I was in those mountains when I was arrested," Faulkner told the Greeley Colorado Tribune, referring to the area near Islamabad, Pakistan where he was arrested. "I think maybe I flushed him down out of the mountains into the foothills."
Obama: "...We have to get out of Iraq..."
Anyone who grew up in Seattle, do you remember the jets scrambling and the semi-frequent flyovers that day? Growing up in Puget Sound, you're aware of the strategic importance of the area (and Hanford in central WA). Had never, though experienced such an eerie lack of normal air-traffic given Sea-Tac, Lewis, Boeing and Paine fields; instead, substituted with the screech of fighters. Won't forget that.

I was in my junior year at Pacific Lutheran University down in Tacoma on 9/11. PLU is right by McChord Air Force Base so things were pretty tense.
IHAVEHADIT! I hate politics. I fucking hate it.
My liberal friend on facebook are making posts like these:
"Obama Succeeded Where Bush Failed"
"Republicans might as well not even show up to the 2012 election"
My conservative friends on facebook are making posts like these:
"Despite Obama, The Military Triumphs"
"Lets see some proof! Why did they put the body in the sea Obama!"
WTF guys. This is something that we can all come together over. This is why we cant have nice things.

DM, I lived in Mukilteo, near Paine Field. That loud crackle from the jets made an already strange, bewildering day into something else. Man, I remember they were still scrambled that night. Remarkable how silent the skys were, and then every so often the silence rended by the fighters.
Also, my brother-in-law's brother (BILB, ?) went to PLU on a swimming scholarship. Saw the campus once when he was graduating. It was a nice contrast to the UW. He had a really nice room; much better than the hell that I later endured in Haggett.

9/11 - Bronx Highschool of Science (we were evacuated)
OBL - literally watching Celebrity Apprentice! I still don't know who trump fiyud.

Several experts on the rules of engagement in combat said that in a raid on a target as dangerous as Bin Laden, the Navy Seals team would be justified to open fire at the slightest commotion when they burst into a room.

Hehe. Wonder what sort of intel they are going on here. Would love to hear why he's considered so dangerous in close quarters battle. Dood is fucking old, has been ill enough not to be able to update his video blog... What would suggest he would take out a room full of SEAL:s? His publicity-popshots with an AK-47?
Uhh... C4 belts around his waist or dynamite sticks under his rag.
Seems to be a lot of Methodis-murmur going on outside the US about if the shooting was justified or not, that bin Laden was "murdered", if the plan was to wack him instead of capture him etc. Dunno what difference this makes, people going on about how Pakistan's sovereignty has been violated and so forth. Is this some sort of big revelation, that the US does unilateral operations to protect their interests inside other sovereign nations? I think the death toll from the UAV missions along the Pakistani border should have tipped people off?
One thing that made me go "huh" was this thing in the NYT though:QuoteSeveral experts on the rules of engagement in combat said that in a raid on a target as dangerous as Bin Laden, the Navy Seals team would be justified to open fire at the slightest commotion when they burst into a room.

Presumably he has (had) bodyguards galore?
I think planning was mostly what he did these days, but the guy definitely saw his share of hands-on shitkicking back when he helped the Taliban boot the Ruskies.
Bush lying about WMDs "eh"
Obama lying about an armed Bin Laden "We may have to see what the constitution says about this!"
A photographer consulted by CNN said the gruesome photograph is most definitely not real.

Well, like you said, Methodis, he was gonna get the death penalty anyway, so might as well kill him now and save the taxpayers some money. Then chuck his body into the sea, to no one's tears.

Just three days after the world learned President Obama ordered a daring special operations mission resulting in the death of Osama bin Laden, Sarah Palin has come around to claim he's "pussy-footing around" -- specifically by not immediately releasing photos of the deceased al Qaeda leader. To underscore the irony, Palin claims the pictures should be released "as warning to others seeking America's destruction" -- one day after numerous reports had her moving in a more pragmatic direction on foreign policy.http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/palin-obama-pussy-footing-by-not-releasing-photo-of-bin-laden-whom-he-killed.php
Palin took to Twitter, one of her go-to modes of communications, moments after news broke that Obama would not release the bin Laden photos.
"Show photo as warning to others seeking America's destruction. No pussy-footing around, no politicking, no drama;it's part of the mission," she said.
It's unclear why she thinks photos of bin Laden's corpse will scare suicidal terrorists.
He was assassinated and illegally murdered. Let's move on. ::) ::) ::)

A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.
According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, "I heard about your uncle's death."
The parent said the student "understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."
The name of the alleged victim of the comment has not been released. She is being described as an "American-born girl of Muslim faith."
The teacher allegedly showed no remorse after Muslim girl reacted to his comments, according to the parent (who requested anonymity from the ABC station because "she doesn't want any retaliation against her daughter or the girl who experienced the inappropriate comment.")
"The student ended up crying over what was said to her by the teacher and the teacher asked her why she was crying and another student said it was because of what you said earlier," the parent told the station. "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away."

It's one thing if I have a very personal relationship or friendship with somebody where they know my limits and what I find funny or not. If I was muslim and some random teacher joked the way that teacher did I would kick him in his nuts. It has nothing to do with being PC. Keep your stupid shit to yourself unless we are tight.truf, my nicca
Same way when too hip white people think calling black people my nicca is cool to my face. You ain't that cool white boy.

When did Michael Moore start looking like an old woman?Wow! That was actually exactly what I thought when I saw that freeze frame also. :lol
Michael Moore is very very mad at you guys.
Michael Moore is very very mad at you guys.
Michael Moore is Michael Moore. He can make entertaining at times although overdone documentaries. He is also overly bombastic and a bit overdone on the self worth of his opinion. I lump him in the same category as somebody like Olbermann.
In other news, Piers Morgan is still a giant cunt.
Bill Maher is still great, minus the whole vaccination bullshit :wag
It's hard to bring people to your side when fact checkers can rip apart your work so easily.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that Goldman Sachs gave 50% more money to Obama in 2008 than Enron did to Bush in 2000.
President Obama has 'pounded his chest' too much and taken too much pride in the success of the mission to take out Osama bin Laden, according to, of all people, George W. Bush's former Chief of Staff, Andrew Card.http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/bush-chief-of-staff-obama-has-pounded-his-chest-over-bin-laden.php?ref=fpb
In an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel, Card said that Obama has "pounded his chest" too much over the death of Osama bin Laden, particularly by going to Ground Zero earlier this week, the site of the 9/11 attacks.
"I think he has pounded his chest a little too much," Card said. "He can take pride in it, but he does not need to show it so much."
Card, of course, was a top official in an administration noted for its theatrical press events, most notably the decision to have President Bush land a fighter jet on board an aircraft carrier before delivering his famous speech celebrating the invasion of Iraq in front of a giant "Mission: Accomplished" banner.
Card said his issue is not with anything Obama has said about his decision to launch the raid on bin Laden's compound, but rather with Obama's actions.

Something I do admire about Taibbi and Moore is that they're willing to pick less popular subjects or take stances that are a bit out of the mainstream, rather than getting boxed in by a sort of Debate Topic Of The Day syndrome.
That's something I'd like to see more of on the liberal side. A lot of people rush to opine about whatever's being debated in Congress, or some underlying tension highighted by a gaffe (Barbour and the Civil War thing), but we could use people banging the drum about stuff like privatized prisons and the Cuba embargo.
edit: and lol andy card, of course
"ENHANCED interrogation" methods including waterboarding used on terror suspects during the Bush years probably helped track down Osama bin Laden and should be reintroduced, former US vice-president Dick Cheney says.
"It was a good program," Mr Cheney said yesterday.
"It was a legal program. It was not torture. I would strongly recommend we continue it."
A stash of pornography was found in the hideout of Osama bin Laden by the U.S. commandos who killed him, current and former U.S. officials said on Friday.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/13/osama-bin-laden-porn_n_861664.html
The pornography recovered in bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.
