By mid-February, the officials were convinced a "high-value target" was hiding in the compound. President Barack Obama wanted to take action.

"They were confident and their confidence was growing: 'This is different. This intelligence case is different. What we see in this compound is different than anything we've ever seen before,'" John Brennan, the president's top counterterrorism adviser, said Monday. "I was confident that we had the basis to take action."

Options were limited. The compound was in a residential neighborhood in a sovereign country. If Obama ordered an airstrike and bin Laden was not in the compound, it would be a huge diplomatic problem. Even if Obama was right, obliterating the compound might make it nearly impossible to confirm bin Laden's death.

Said Brennan: "The president had to evaluate the strength of that information, and then made what I believe was one of the most gutsiest calls of any president in recent memory."

Obama tapped two dozen members of the Navy's elite SEAL Team Six to carry out a raid with surgical accuracy.

 Before dawn Monday morning, a pair of helicopters left Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan. The choppers entered Pakistani airspace using sophisticated technology intended to evade that country's radar systems, a U.S. official said.

Officially, it was a kill-or-capture mission, since the U.S. doesn't kill unarmed people trying to surrender. But it was clear from the beginning that whoever was behind those walls had no intention of surrendering, two U.S. officials said.

The helicopters lowered into the compound, dropping the SEALs behind the walls. No shots were fired, but shortly after the team hit the ground, one of the helicopters came crashing down and rolled onto its side for reasons the government has yet to explain. None of the SEALs was injured, however, and the mission continued uninterrupted.

With the CIA and White House monitoring the situation in real time — presumably by live satellite feed or video carried by the SEALs — the team stormed the compound and entered the room where bin Laden was hiding. While Warner Bros. has never pushed the comparison, the entire Potter saga -- both the books and the movies -- has had an inevitable subtext, colored by the events of 9/11.

While Hollywood scrambles to figure out ways to exploit the death of Osama Bin Laden on screen, the first movie that could actually benefit from the news of the terrorist’s death is likely to be the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which Warners will release on July 15.

While Warners has never pushed the comparison, the entire Potter saga -- both the books and the movies -- has had an inevitable subtext, colored by the events of 9/11.

While the first volume in J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series was originally published in England in 1997, the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in November, 2001, just months after 9/11.

It set up the ongoing conflict between Harry, the young, orphaned wizard, who gradually discovers his powers, and the malignant force of evil, Lord Voldemort, who is bent on destroying him. First referred to only as “He Who Must Not Be Named,” Voldemort is introduced as something of a formless boogie-man -- not unlike the mysterious Osama -- but then, over the course of the series, takes on more and more of a physical presence until in the last volume he and Harry go head-to-head in a final, cataclysmic battle. Meanwhile, in the wake of Bin Laden’s death in a mansion near Islamabad, a meme has already popped up on the web, noting the weird coincidence that Osama and Voldemort both died on the same day, May 1. But true Potter fans have been quick to point out that’s not quite true: When Harry and Voldemort actually finally come face-to-face in the Battle of Hogwarts, in the books’ chronology the date is really May 2, 1998.
 
Of course, even without an end to Bin Laden, the final Potter movie is already on track to be one of the biggest movies of the summer. The franchise has already grossed more than $6.3 billion at the worldwide box office.

But Bin Laden’s death is now likely to give the movie an extra emotional resonance for the Potter generation, and that could translate into an even bigger box office bonanza

I'm pretty left-tendencied, but I'd be hard-pressed to feel bad about taking out the founder of Al-Qaeda. I'm happy he caught one in the face, though I'm surprised they buried him at sea. Makes me wonder when the conspiracy theorists will start spouting.

Is this really a left-right issue? 

I wouldn't try to frame as a left-right political issue, but yeah, if you don't believe in the death penalty, then I could see this being an issue for some people. Regardless of my kooky liberal leanings, I'm glad they did it and have tons of respect for everyone involved.

I guess I'm about as "left" like Schwarzenegger is a "republican." I'm for the death penalty, but feel it is used the most in states where it should be exercised with greater restraint, where defendants have been found guilty where there might have been a shadow of reasonable doubt.

OBL deserved to be incarcerated or jailed about the same way as Charles Manson; while he didn't directly kill anyone in those attacks, he's still responsible for inciting his followers to commit acts of terrorism, killing thousands of innocents. Personally, I'd rather see both Manson and OBL executed, as we've established their legal responsibility for the murders.
