Title: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)
Post by: Joe Molotov on December 17, 2011, 09:39:21 PM
Sale starts Monday, as does the official start of the achievement hunt, but games have been rolling out updates over the weekend, so some of them are already active. See the list here:

http://steamtreasurehunt.wikia.com/wiki/Winter_Objectives

I got the TF2, L4D2, and DEFCON cheetos so far. Gonna go grind on that Poker Night one now.

I got lucky because I was already in a high stakes match with just me and Heavy.  I had 30k and he had like 8k, so it was quick and I didn't care about taking chances.   According to steam it took 0.1 hours  :teehee

I'm more pissed because I played Binding of Issac and finally hit the devil room before realizing I couldn't get the achievement yet.  But I have everything else except L4D2 and Sequence.

L4D2 seems like it requires another person to grind, unless you want to play normally.  I'll do that later.

I'm pretty stoked to see some of these games that will go on sale.  Hoping for low prices for Space Marine, EYE, Bastion, Hard Reset, and Red Orchestra 2.

I hate owning so many games.  I didn't know I owned sanctum, spacechem, revenge of titans, and others.  more achievements to get  :'(

also, stop putting and yet it moves and poker on these things!

Haha, all those indie bundles are starting to bear fruit.

also, stop putting and yet it moves and poker on these things!

While trying to get the 3 Kings achievement, I also got the Summer of '69 one by accident, which was a Summer achievement that I had never bother to get because Poker Night sucks balls.

Yeaaaaaaah.  They need to stop making games ever again so I can play all the good ones already out there!

The worst part is buying a ton of games and playing TF2 instead.  :'(

I was toying around with the idea of taking a year off from games, or just buying the ones I really care about.  But then I realized that I was already doing that, and all it meant is that my backlog of 2011 games is gigantic  :-\  And I still have tons of 2010 games, like Dead Rising 2, which is even installed on my PC right now :'(

I'm narrowing/eliminating a lot of them.

I feel bad for the guy/girl who wins "every game on steam"

When you wake up with 10,000 games, how do you decide what to play next?  Where do you even start?  Just trying each one for 5 mins will take years.  Valve is basically destroying someone's life with that prize.

it seems like getting achievements in certain games gives you a present, which is random.  it could be coal, a coupon, or games.

Free games for achievements?

I like this idea!

Has anyone won any free games yet?  Wondering what kind of games they are giving away.  Probably more "zombie shooter 1" and less "Batman Arkham City" I'm guessing ;)

So do these coupons stack on top of the sale price? I got the 33% off a Valve game coupon and if it's possible I could use it on Portal 2 at $7.49 to get the game for $5.

A little over 70 euros. I tried to restrain myself in case some of those end up being daily deals, but in the end I decided I was way too rock and roll for frugality.

I'm especially curious about Insecticide. An action-adventure from some of the folks behind Monkey Island 3 (if memory serves me right) that bombed hard and whose quality is said to be debatable. It was like 70 cents.

They made a lot bad decisions with Fable 3 for sure, but I love the industrial revolution/cutesy Dickensian setting so much I'm willing to overlook most of its faults. It hits a note that the first two games were still kinda struggling to find.

Second half was undoubtedly shit, though.

also, you can't use any of the coupons until January 2nd (and they're only good through March), after the sale

so basically even with the coupon you will pay more than the sale price

It is but I don't like that you take friendly fire and can fall off ledges.  Was 5-star-ing a hard level with an awesome trap setup and then while shooting some airborne guys while strafing backwards I backed off a ledge and lost 2 stars :(

The Orcs Must Die achievement is like the easiest achievement known to man.  It's the first stage and requires no effort.  So 5 mins max.

Which is odd because I heard some of these xmas sale achievements are a huge pain in the ass.

If it's anything like the last three treasure hunts, all the achievements can be done by the end of the sale. You don't have to do them on the day they show up.

Anomaly Earth Warzone & Orcs Must Die are fun alternate takes on Tower Defense.

Cargo is LSD game that's like Banjo Nuts & Bolts but not good, or at least not that fun.  Edge controls like crap on a keyboard.  And Bunch of Heroes is supposed to be pretty sucky.

I wish I knew the Bunch of Heroes cheev was glitched before I wasted two hours trying to get it.

Edit: But yeah, that's a pretty good analysis of those games. Orcs and Anamoly were both fun and easy, the other games were snooze city.  :zzz And of course the hardest one was the broken one.  ::) And if you think EDGE controls bad on a keyboard, try an Xbox controller. Spoiler: It sucks.

What really sucks about the contest games is that they aren't even on super 75%+ sales to make them popcorn entertainment cheap where you pay $1 or $1.50 and play for 30 mins to get the achievement and feel like you got your money's worth.

This time around they're like $3.99 or $4.99 each and there's 5 games per day!  For 12 days!  WTF.  I spent like $13 today on these!

The sting would be a lot less if I didn't just pay FOUR FREAKING DOLLARS to play a shitty game like Edge.  You can buy the daily discount games like Metro 2033 for the same price.

This sale is a lot less appealing than previous ones :(  I'm not going to be buying every indie game I don't have this time around.

Getting through some of these cheevos

And Yet It Moves - shit. Had to look up a youtube video on how to get rid of the lizard
Audiosurf - easy
bit.trip.runner - awesome but frustrating as hell, won't be doing the achievement that requires you to finish level 3-7
Orcs Must Die - great game, wish I'd played it earlier
Trine - Some of the puzzles aren't that clear, but it's really pretty.
Jamestown - another game I wish I'd played earlier, really great music too.

Edit: won 2 lumps of coal and a Portal 2 untradeable hat

I remember somewhat enjoying the shooter for the flying section in the demo.  The ground combat was awful, but there aren't too many games that do air combat these days.

and Witcher 2 seems to be capped off at 40% in 2011.  Will probably pick up in 2012.

It's cute but it's a jrpg with a really really slow and shallow battle system.  Every fight will play out the same and you have to fight tons and tons of encounters in a really short game.

Everyone I know who doesn't play a lot of jrpgs loved it for the nostalgic turn-based gameplay they haven't played in a decade, people who play jrpgs regularly were bored stiff because modern jrpg battle systems are lightyears beyond this one.

I've been wanting to play Cave Story and VVVVVV for a while now, so I caved and got the indie bundle. $5 for 12 games - even if most of them suck I can't really complain.

I actually won something!!

And it was a game I sort of wanted too.  Nail'd

Valued at $7!

So far out of 8 gifts:
-6 pieces of coal
-50% off Valve game coupon
-50% off The Wonderful End of the World coupon
-Nail'd

Nice find with nail'd.

So far I've got Half-Life 2, Audiosurf, 33% off Bitcomposer Games, and 13 pieces of coal (I've done some trading). I'm considering just keeping all my coal and hoping for a miracle, since the odds of crafting a crap coupon are too high.

Yeah, has anyone actually crafted coal into a game?  Every post I see on gaf about crafting coal results in a shitty coupon.  If the odds or low to nothing for getting a game out of coal then it's definitely better to hold on to them.

Boring sales today unless you didn't pick up Batman for $25 on Origin during BF.

Only thing I'll grab is the Defense Grid GLADOS DLC pack.

50% off portal 2 coupon :(

Will go for Defense Grid & Swords and Soldiers gifts today since I own both.  Not buying shitty game like Payday for $10.  And was holding off on JP until it's even cheaper during a telltale sale.

Only question is this Guardians of Graxia that's $2.50.  I see a bunch of people on my friend's list own it, but it has 55/100 metacritic score >_<  Joe, did you play it?

You know, it may very well be excellent, but I'm so turned off by both NWN1 and D&D in general that I'll probably never give it a fair shot.

I hope Vampire Bloodlines becomes a daily. It's 15 bucks even after 25% off. Game is seven years old ffs.

it seems different than the Valve shooters.  those are random and drop even when you die.  here, it is one present per kill, all in one game, and presents are team specific.  also has to be on a specific snow map.

Pretty sure you still get presents from the previous ones, or at least Steam seems to imply that. I'm not sure if there's a specific time limit for them or they last the whole sale though.

What irks me about the dailies this sale is that the prices are THE EXACT SAME as they have been for these games during the normal weekly dailies and weekend sales in 2011.  How is Divinity 2 still $10?  (not that I care, bought it at $20 last winter sale; but still).

Where are the OMG FIRST TIME EVER 75% off $5-12.50 deals for games?  I'm not seeing it at all.

Won't be surprised if I don't buy a single game from the dailies this sale and just pick up non-daily sale stuff on the last day at 50-75% off.

Just bought Deus Ex off Amazon and activated it on Steam. Thanks for the heads up, everyone.

They sent me a $5 promotional code for a top selling DD game, but I don't think I'll buy anything from now until Jan 31st. Any takers?

50% off Amnesia, which I already own, and if I didn't, is already 50% off during the Steam sale.  I don't get it.

and I don't understand the binding of isaac one.  I went to the devil's room at least six times and there is no new miniboss.

But yeah, I've yet to stumble on one I can personally use.

The gifting management page is horrible. I sent a couple of gifts and they're appearing in the gift history as either delivered or pending. The old small window was a lot more useful.

15 gifts so far, ~$25 spent on C-tier games I sort of wanted, but they also happened to have a gift achievement.

result:
One $7 game :|, 11 lumps of coal, a bunch of crappy coupons.

Title: Re: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)
Post by: cool breeze on December 23, 2011, 02:41:24 AM
spacechem is GREAT.  run down of games I played for achievements so far:

and yet it moves -  shit game.  never want to play again (until next steam quest).
atom zombie smasher - great game.  the bonus mode required is a bit weird, but w/e.
audiosurf - don't like.
bit trip runner - cool game when it's not annoying.  there's a reason rhythm games allow leeway about missing notes.
the binding isaac - awesome game.  lame random achievement.
dino d-day - I like the humor.  the game isn't fun. achievement servers are already up.
frozen synapse - super hot.  easy achievement.
jamestown - great game.  really easy achievement.
magicka - seems fun.  easy achievement.
poker night at the inventory - FUCKING AWFUL
psychonauts - nice PC version.  easy achievement with save.
renegade ops - AWESOME.  random achievement that required DLC.
revenge of the titans - tower defense trash. 2/5 achievements were easy enough.
sanctum - a pretty fun tower defense game! fuck? easy achievement
sequence - like a furry game without furries, if that makes sense.  easy achievement.
space chem - AWESOME.  fun/mildly difficult achievement.
super meat boy - nice game.  first achievement is easy.  won't attempt second one.
trine - awesome game.  easy achievement if you already played it.
dungeons of dredmor - great game.  easy/random achievement.
DEFCON - no idea.  you barely played for the achievement.

the nice thing about the steam quests if that it gives me a reason to play these backlogged games.  some I'll continue, others I'll uninstall.

Post by: Bebpo on December 23, 2011, 03:09:29 AM
Maybe I'm weird as everyone else seems to do it your way and do all the achievements ahead of time, but I just do the games for each day.  I'd rather get the gift immediately after each achievement and see what it is so there's satisfaction if it's something cool.  Plus I just don't have time to do more than 3-4 game achievements per night.

For me, so far:

Anomaly Warzone Earth - really cool game, fun achievement
Cargo - lol game, lol achievement
Edge-  shit game, shit achievement
Toki Tori - ok game, achievement sucks, got a save
AI Fleet War - no idea, game is super complex and achievement takes years, got a save
Defense Grid - really cool game, fun achievement
Guardians of Garaxia - shit game, used a save
Spiral Knights - lol game, took too long
Dungeons of Dredmor - cool game, fun achievement
Psychonauts - good game, used a save since otherwise takes a few hours to get to that point
Swords and Soldiers HD - neat game, fun achievement
Orcs Must Die - Great game, lolz achievement
Polynomial - Fun game, fun achievement, nice winter level
Defcon - good game, lol achievement
Post Apocalyptic Mayhem - Ok generic budget racer, ok achievement

I've only played Bit.Trip Runner so far. It was fun at first, but then I realized it's a flashier version of a crappy flash game you can find on newgrounds/XBLIG. I'll probably go back and get the achievement for the present I'm missing.

Bought Renegade Ops too. Gonna play that later today, hope it's good.

The Runner cheevs are a giant pain in the ass.  You have to beat all the levels up to 3-7 to get the Trine one.  Some of the hardest levels in the game are 1-11 and the following boss fight.  (1-11 sucks because it is so fucking long and the boss fight requires you to be absolutely perfect)
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)
Post by: iconoclast on December 23, 2011, 07:55:02 AM
Yeah, 1-11 was where I decided the game was bad. They literally throw the exact same obstacles at you anywhere from 3-8 times in a row, until they've run out of ideas and the stage finally ends. The boss sucked too but at least it was more tolerable.

i have bought more games elsewhere which activate on steam than I have bought actual steam games during this sale

grabbed Space Marine and Renegade Ops ($3 and includes the DLC, sure) from Amazon, Lord of the Rings WAR In the North from Green Man Gaming and Deus Ex from Direct2Drive.

From Steam I bought some Batman DLC.  Because I am weak and want to beat up criminals dressed as different Batmen.

Just goes to show that MS & Sony need to make achievements actually DO something besides e-peen.  You should be able to trade in gamerscore/trophies for store points on the marketplace.  I've always said this, and finally someone is making it happen and now the cheevo game is super gambling addicting.

Agreed. I've dumped in my Steam wallet a $100, expecting it won't last me a few days, yet my biggest investment was 40% off Witcher 2 ($23.99) I realized the next day when I was trying to buy Deus Ex that it's up on Amazon for 5 dollars less.

This isn't the Steam I know. Based gaben is probably under a lot of pressure from pubs these days.

I've found people will just price compare and not trade game for game unless they are similar value.  Best way is to trade game -> coal and then coal -> game but playing the coal numbers is tough.  Yesterday I think 1 coal was going for about $1->$1.50.

I think it's really cool.  Totally confusing, complex and alien, but cool.  Only complaint is that the shooting feels like HL2, which isn't the best.  I don't think it's a source engine thing because I've played mods with improved combat, and L4D feel better than vanilla HL2.

I got the achievement on the streets of a cyberpunk city where respawning men in black trench coats with robots were constantly attacking me, and at one point I went into a bar and was told to murder everyone.

Skyrim is only 33%. Meh, unless someone knows a better deal, I'm gonna buy it. I'm done waiting.

FYI, Dungeon Defenders is $1.99 on Amazon DD.

Is the cole/business worth it? Unlike the previous hunts and contests, I haven't touched this one. None of the unlocked discounts mean much unless there's a dimension to it I'm not aware of.

Getting Hard Reset on steam $5 and Dungeon Defenders on Amazon for $2 and HAWX for $2.50 just cause I don't have any flight sims from the last 5 years and wouldn't mind checking out one.

Skyrim is still expensive, especially figuring there will be a GOTY edition with 4-5 DLC expansions by this time next year.  If it was under $30 maybe I'd bite.  But I'll just wait a year.

All I'm hoping out for over the next 8 days or so of Steam Sales is one bloody Assassin's Creed sale.  I don't care if it's only 25% off, I'd like to play AC Rev before the summer (which it'll probably be 50%).  I'm used to day 1-ing every AC game, so waiting on Rev is hard :\

Not really unless you get a sap to buy your coal with real games (and you need A LOT of coal to do that since it's worth very little these days).  If you have 7 coal you can probably trade it for a $2-4 game since it's like a lottery ticket with a 5% chance of winning a game worth more than $2-4.

I bought a huge amount of coal for dirt cheap because I wanted to take the gamble.  Got all coupons and just lost the money I threw at it.  Same thing is happening to a lot of people now so everyone is giving up on coal hope.

skyrim is a good price considering it just came out and is really popular.

I kinda want to go to gamestop and buy the collector's edition for $100.  What's pissing me off is the stupid dragon statue.  collector's editions used to be decent, but not everything includes a giant lame statue.  statue of cole from infamous...what?

Got another 2 pieces of coal so far from Jamestown and And Yet it Moves.  That makes uh 15 straight coal gifts.  This contest is making me hate Gaben.  I don't think they thought out this contest that well, at the end of the day it's going to piss off customers more than let them have fun and want to like steam.  The ticket summer sale was way better.

Renegade Ops is AWESOME...which was expected from Avalanche.  Can't wait to sink more time into this.

Hard Reset is really good on first glance.  The game controls incredibly well.  Smoothest, fastest, best controlling FPS I've played in years.  It also looks and runs great.  Cool cyberpunk theme.  Why I am playing bland Military FPS games when there are these interesting creative FPS games out there.  I should play this and Rage as my next FPS games.

Won my 2nd game from the Hard Reset gift:  Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth (valued at $5).  I heard it's good, but I dunno if I'll ever get to it.  Graphics are reaaaal ugly by today's standards.

Renegade Ops is fun, but every single time I play it the sound cuts off in the middle of a mission, and the only way to fix it is to reboot the game. Which is really annoying. I also don't like how you have to level up. That just makes me want to use 1 character until he's maxed out and never touch the other ones.

Nice win!

I'm not really sure what I'd do if I won something that's actually worth $$ but I already had it.  Would try to trade someone else in a similar position and if that doesn't work, just keep it around as a birthday/xmas gift for close friends.

You can try discount straight up cash trades.  Like "If you buy me this game for $20 on my wishlist, I'll give you Witcher 2 for it" so you're essentially selling the game for X amount of dollars.

The CrimeCraft cheev was actually surprisingly fun. There's minimal BS, you just register an account, and then jump in a round of Snow Brawl and start throwing snow balls at people (although I recommend remapping the snowball throwing button from F1 to something like RMB). I easily got the achievement in 2 five minute rounds. No tutorial levels, no overworld, no trying to get a party together, no coordinating with your teammates, no randomness, just tossing snowballs, getting cheevs. Would I play the game again? No, of course not. But compared to the Spiral Knights and Rise of the Immortals lame-o achievements, it was a breath of fresh air.

it's less intensive with less impressive results, but weighing the cost versus the benefit, it's nice.  I have a vague understanding of it, that it's like a post-processing filter of sorts, like MLAA.

yeah, I use it in games that support it.  I'm glad nvidia is alpha testing system wide FXAA (and frame capping) for future drivers, and for a while there have been other ways to get it working in unsupported games.

Played the first two levels of Hard Reset (on Hard). Seems pretty good, but it's more of a consoley shooter than I was expecting, with its two weapon limit and linear, corridor style level design. It also has full 360 pad support and 50 achievements that total up to 1000 points... I wonder if a console version was planned and canceled. Either way, it still has fun combat, and it runs perfectly on my PC (60 fps with most settings maxed). Worth the $5 at least.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)
Post by: cool breeze on December 25, 2011, 02:27:25 AM
technically it has like eight or ten shooting modes divided in the two ammo and energy weapons once you upgrade.  the corridor style levels are odd because they're not meant for speedruns, and there aren't wide enough corridors like painkiller.

there is an 'extended edition' or something planned for retailers with extra levels and whatnot.  there was a thread on gaf about it; don't know if that's coming in a patch.

checked out a bit of the giantbomb quicklook.  seemed like it could either be a linear platformer or zelda-ish game.

If I send a gift nowadays, how can I check whether it's been redeemed or still pending?

I tested the new layout with a gift but it's not showing as either in http://steamcommunity.com/my/inventory#pending_gifts (view history).

What does this mean?

so, steam sales = next valve game.  cool.

I'm all for them focusing on steam, it's just sad when people think they are about making video games these days.  it's time to face the facts.  Do you want Valve games or massive amounts of other games sold via Valve?

valve hates you.  empty your wallets bitches.  they are greedy.  :troll :troll :troll

technically it has like eight or ten shooting modes divided in the two ammo and energy weapons once you upgrade.

Yeah, I just noticed this after playing more. I thought the rest of those weapons were ones you would find on each level, but as it turns out you just buy the upgrade and it allows your gun to morph into something else ala Vanquish. So yeah you can carry like 10 weapons at a time, which is awesome.

Only other complaint I have is that enemies can feel a little bullet spongey on hard, and it would be nice if they reacted more when getting shot. This game is making me want to play Rage actually since I've heard that game is good about that.

Some sales and stuff today.  Nothing for me, will wait for Red Faction Armageddon to reach $5 or less status next year.  Got burned on Sonic Generations for $15 from Amazon, but sales periods are always a gamble, oh well.

I like today's deals. Think I'll pick up Bulletstorm for $5, even though I already have the 360 version and never played it. Might get Beat Hazard too, and I'm kinda interested in Rock of Ages because I liked Zeno Clash. Plus some of the other games on sale are good, but I've already played them.

Best day yet.

I got bulletstorm and bastion (lost 10 cents because I didn't buy it when it was a daily deal a few weeks back  :'( )

Considering rock of ages.  I remember the demo on the xbox but it seemed part tower defense.  I think anything over $5 that I won't play now is a pass, like Sonic, Alice, etc.

I totally should have waited for Steam's Sonic deal. Now $15 is too much for merely wanting to see what "Classic Sonic in 1080 and 60fps looks like."

But I finally got Bastion (Linkzg vindicated) and I'll probably snag something else too.

crafted next set of 7 coal into = 50% off Dungeons of Dredmor coupon, lol

This is why I'm only doing achievements where they are like playing the demo of a game I own but haven't tried.  It's fun playing a little of these games to check them out; feels like E3 or something, trying 15-30 mins of dozens of games.

But anything that requires work...lol

If I'm online sure; I'm online when I'm in a game, otherwise I'm probably away and I just don't change my steam status.

So playing more gift games:

Bastion - Didn't like the demo, still don't like it, but will play it eventually because everyone seems to love it.  The combat just seems super clunky.
Demolition Inc - Kind of a neat Burnout Crash game, but some parts seem a little too random, like not being able to tell which direction an oil slick or wheel glue will cause a car to turn when it runs it over.  Also -10 points for having a broken monitor detection and not letting me play at higher than 720p on my 1080p monitor or 1080tv.
Atom Zombie Smasher - The mini-game you play for the cheev is a lot of fun when you get the hang of it.  Game seems stylish and cool as well; will probably play this.
X3 - holy fuck is this confusing at first.  Once I got the hang of it, was pretty cool to fly around space and shoot stuff and comm stuff.  I suck at flight games, always tough to track a guy so the auto-follow is nice
Rock of Ages - Loves the cutscenes, like the art/graphics, don't care for the gameplay much.  Rolling is fun but building is zzz

So far I got Dungeons of Dredmor for (I think) $1.75, E.Y.E for $2.50, Dead Island (from Amazon) for $12, and Alice for $7.50. Not a bad haul at all for less than $25, even being broke until the weekend I found a way to manage all that and the $10 for Red Dead GOTY from Best Buy.

Alice is a great game, so very pretty to look at.

Gonna see if I can trade it for anything cheap and decent.

Also today's AAAaaaaaaa achievement is balls.  The 2nd to last stage is ridiculous.  Not worth the frustration.  Dawn of War 2 Retribution gift is annoying because you need to do it with a friend so you have it windowed running for 30 mins before you end it.

well it's prettier here.  the story is still whatever.  it still has "jump" and psychological scare moments but overall the game has a lot more action.

depends on what you found boring.  combat is largely the same with various improvements to make it feel like an action shooter (impaling enemies with sawed off limbs and stuff).  the overall structure is changed up.  first off, you're not in the samey looking location the entire time.  there's no backtracking.  everything is a lot more shootery; even the gravity rooms have you flying around with boosters instead of jumping from wall to wall.

I'm playing Extraction (to get ready for DS2) and it's pretty cool.  Too bad it's not on PC with mouse controls.

Picked up the AC games today.  Was going to get Revelations no matter what price cause I want to play it, and picked up the rest of the games to have the sandbox cities at 1080p/60fps/4xAA to run around and climb.  Also got Serious Sam 3 from that $11.99 deal.  I hated SS1 HD so much by the end, but I've heard from several people I trust that if you hate the old SS games, but like shooters, you'll like SS3.

Now my wishlist is basically empty; damn you gaben.  Only need to pick up Lost Planet 2 ($10) and Dead Rising 2 OTR ($20 but hoping for a daily, lol) at the end of the sale.  Will wait for 2012 winter sale to catch up on CoD games and Skyrim.

Are you playing Extraction with a gamepad or the move? with the move it played more or less like it did with a wii remote.  It had tons of waggling in it too.  Extraction was fun.  A bit heavy on the cinematics but I enjoyed the story in it more than the main Dead Space games.  I'm going through the iphone game at a snails pace and it seems good too.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)
Post by: Bebpo on December 28, 2011, 02:45:42 PM
Move.  Controls great and better than using a Wiimote (framerate feels smoother which helps).

I like that it's story based and has good voice acting; that it has path splits so if you replay a level you can see new stuff; that there's lots of hidden junk collectables to find and upgrades for weapons; and the combat feels like Dead Space.

Debating whether to pick up DS2 for $5 on PC and play it on that when I finish Extraction.  Was planning on playing it on PS3 since I own it already there and it has trophies.  But clean IQ and 1080p might make it better to play on PC.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Achievement Quest 2011 (also a sale, I guess)

I think the one upside to playing it on consoles is that Campaign DLC (though it might be 360 only).  PC version was great.

Though, the steam version includes suit/weapon DLC, which is weird because you have access to the best equipment from the get go.  Anything that is free in the store shouldn't be available at that point.  So I just played it without touching any of the DLC stuff.

I'll field some AC questions since I think me and MAF are the resident AC fanatics.

How's Asscreed 1 & 2 on PC again? I'm more curious about 1. I need to start playing this series.

Tech-wise they are awesome.  Ass1 has INSANE textures on PC.  Looks freaking gorgeous.  They dropped that with Ass2 and on but it still looks very nice and they run great.  Otoh the X360 versions look just "good" and run 30fps & the PS3 versions.................. :lol  we're talking about 15fps with shitty IQ.

As for the games themselves.  Ass1 is TERRIBLE.  It's solid at the start and it's pretty enough to run around climbing the cities, but it'll be a pain to finish it (see: MAF AssCreed replay thread).

Otoh, Assassin's Creed 2 is a wonderful action adventure game with a super entertaining story (and a good one in the MGS wacky videogame sense), lots of varied gameplay, and great cities to follow the narrative through.  It's one of the most memorable AAA games this gen.  If you do everything it's a good 25-30 hour game.

I haven't been able to get more than 4-5 hours into AC1 and AC2. Any reason to think Brotherhood would be any different?

No way unless you don't care about stories and just want gameplay.  AssBro has good gameplay, even better than AC2; but there's only 1 city (Rome) and it unlocks veeeery slowly a piece at a time until the endgame.  The story kind of sucks and is totally irrelevant in the scheme of things and the Desmond portions are pointless.  I'm glad I played it because Rome was a cool location to explore, but the game was completely forgettable and I'll never replay it, just like I'll never replay AC1.

/fingers crossed Revelations is better!

Traded From Dust for Dead Space 2.  So at least I didn't waste $5 double-dipping on a game I already own.  Now I can justify playing DS2 on PC!

Great price for Isaac if you don't own it already, though. I recommend installing Joy2Key and using a gamepad.

Yeah, I mean for one Sword of the Stars II is an incredibly broken game at the technical level. LotR:WotN was cheaper on Origin some weeks back, DS3 sale is weak, and Mafia II and Total War sales have been done many times before. Binding of Issac is worth the money though.

I didn't realize Rock of Ages was from the Zeno Clash guys...now everything about it makes a lot more sense.

Played a bit of Hard Reset (which I got gifted from a hot piece of mess) for the acheesement and Bulletstorm since I said I'd buy at $5. I can get on board with this stupid shooter with tons of fun shit thing. Serious Sam can't do it alone. Something about plowing through mounds of enemies, shit blowing up everywhere, some secrets, fancy weapons and crap.

None of that silly pretense.

Reminds one of the days of good gaming, you know, like Chex Quest.

NV was 75% off over Thanksgiving - I blew through it during December and loved it a ton more than Fallout 3. At this point it's well-patched by both Obsidian and the mod community so it's, as you say, a no-brainer.

Fallout: New Vegas? I'd trade you some coal for that. It would probably sit in my backlog for a little while though so if anyone else wants it feel free to pass over me.

Also this board is pretty generous with games. I'd give some stuff away but all I've really got are coupons. If anyone wants coupons for Valve games, Alien Breed 3, World of Goo, or Drakensang just ask.

Picked up Universe Sandbox since it looks interesting and has a gift and Flight Control HD because it was cheap and has a gift.  Otherwise nothin'

Hope the last day of real sales tomorrow has a few good deals.

I'll take one coal, if you're offering.

I don't think there are any other deals I want.  adding it all up, only spent about $25 during the steam sale

Bulletstorm
Bastion
Hard Reset
Duke Nukem Forever
EYE
Fable The Lost Chapters

spent more on other sites selling steamworks games/keys at better prices

Saint's Row The Thrid + DLC ($23)
Renegade Ops + DLC ($3)
Deus Ex DLC ($3)
Skyrim

now, time not to play any of them

The only things left on my wishlist are:
Lost Planet 2
Dead Rising 2 OTR
Driver
Skyrim
CoD Black Ops
CoD MW3

Will wait another year for the last 4 of those as they're too new and by companies that don't price drop much (Bethesda aside, who do have great deals but Skyrim is too new still).  Will pick up the first 2 tomorrow if they aren't on daily (Capcom daily?  LOL)

Oh well, I have a ton of other things to play.

There's that LA Noir sale I've been waiting for.

Is Hoard worth $2.50?  I heard Rochard is quite good so I might jump on that though I'm sure it'll be $2.50 or in an indie pack any day now.

Hoard's single player is pretty barebones but I think it's worth that price for the multiplayer alone.

Just play it with a guide, at least then you can watch the story.

Now do I craft my 21 pieces of coal or stupidly hope I win something?

I just crafted 7 coal into ...HALF-LIFE 1

...

....

.....

 :lol

I'm surprised Valve even put that as a gift.  Thought it would at least be a half-life collection or something.  Who can I even GIFT HL1 to?

Also was able to trade some junk for Nuclear Dawn.  Yay!

I have 57 gifts unlocked so far.  There's basically 3 left I can do without buying expensive games (which I'm not doing) or playing shitty F2P games that take forever like Crimecraft or Rusty Hearts:  Magika, SpaceChem, Nuclear Dawn.  Will try to do all 3 to top it off with an even 60.  Don't expect to get anything else at this point, but will at least have a few coal to go into the sweepstakes.

the nuclear dawn achievement is not easy unless you play on a low populated server

basically spawn as a stealth then hold shift to run till you get to near enemy base

then press f to go invisible  (you will be visible when inside the spawn area)

find the commander building go inside and kill the guy

if you are on a populated server this will get you murdered in literally one second by any assualt class douche

Yeah, on gaf they're saying Valve has run out of 3rd party games/coupons and crafting will only get you % off Valve games or Valve games themselves.

Seems like it's time to pack it in and keep your coal for the contest.

Viz for the Cheev I just went on a server with only 1 other player.  Ran up and stabbed him, lol.

Did the SpaceChem one legitimately from the start.  Took me like 2 hours.  Game is really neat but the final stage (2-5) for the achievement, the 2nd part where you gotta mix the N=C with the 2 Hs was really confusing.

Anyhow got COUNTERSTRIKE SOURCE from it.  So yeah, Valve has run out of 3rd party stuff and is now just giving away old ass Valve games at a high ratio.  Tbh I'd rather have coal!

And I did the Magika achievement to top it off at 60 gifts.  Total was 4 games won, worth a total of $20; about 12-15 useless coupons and a whole lot of coal.  Have 3 coal in the end to go into the sweepstakes.

I had to basically look at solutions online for the tutorial stages and reverse engineer what they were doing to learn how to play.  It's really neat when you do, but that tutorial...no words man...

I did the spacechem achievements without the video or tutorial.  Felt great to just sit there, look at it, experiment, and slowly piece together how it works.  A lot of "aha" moments.  Most satisfying puzzle game I've played in a while.  It's one of the few steam achievement games I'll return to.

I never heard of it until I saw it on sale the other day. Checked out the demo and bought it instantly. Pretty laid back little game that you can just zen out to. Kind of reminded me of fl0w but with actual gameplay in it.

Yeah solar 2 is pretty damn laid back. Till you have ten sun's orbiting each other and they are each affecting one another's gravitational orbit. Then you get this crazy meth head tweeker like game play going on. Where you obviously have lost all control and are just trying your best to not lose  the sun's mass.

I was actually buying it for someone else but accidentally forgot to purchase as gift. Ended up being the best mistake of this whole sale.

this is another cool little game too.

I'm kinda new to Steam (have it for a long time but rarely used it because my laptop's cpu can't handle anything) but bought a lot of stuff this sale because I'm going to build a new pc in the coming months and I want cheap stuff to play. I missed some deals on games I wanted because I was away on those days (Stalker and Metro for example). Some of those games are still off 50%, should I buy them? Or wait for some better deals (e.g. 75%)? I don't have a feeling how often those deals are and how cheap the games are gonna be.
I already have lots of stuff to play, but much of it is long ass rpg's. So I could use some shooters and action adventures.

nah, they'll be on sale again before you know it - probably before you get that PC built. There are daily sales, mid-week sales, weekend sales...all kinds of shit. Plus summer, Xmas, winter sales...wait for 66-75% is my typical rule, unless i must play it immediately.

Anyway, I bought Bastion and Prototype today using those I got coupons. Glad they weren't completely useless.

Weren't they also trading them for coal? And using multiple accounts for the simple steam achievements.
