i will never forget going to the charlotte heroescon a few years ago

while i was thumbing through a box of back issues this dude wearing a padded coat (in june) slung up right next to me, and oh god it was as if he'd taken a bath in a rancid can of potted meat, the smell clung inside my nose for hours afterward

i'd actually brought a fresh shirt and deodorant with me and changed in the van so i wouldn't walk in there all sweated-up from the drive, and at that point i thought to myself "why the fuck did i even bother?"

Okay the booth is all set up. The temperature in the hall was pretty cool today but I'm imagining tomorrow it'll be all kinds of stanky.

Saw a bunch of people dressed in Mario fish hats and pink wigs invading the Irish pub we were in. Hooboy here we go.

Yep that was it.

Things aren't too bad here.  The people who are playing my game are all really cool and are digging it. And the jujitsu tournament I went to last month smelled a LOT worse. I am losing my voice though.

sony booth ahs been ok so far. we got one crazy guy who i think was a nintendo fan come up to my demo station and start yelling about how we're ripping off mario and ruining japanese culture and the economy. I told him this game was being developed by a japanese company and he went away. later my friend who works for turn 10 said he ended up yellowing at them about ripping off gran turismo and ruining japenese culture.

smh i hate conventions.

Some final shots from day one:

I actually took this pic for the Shy Guy in the background, bah. Maybe I can get a good pic of him tomorrow.

There was another Mega Man walking around, 8-bit with a Lego helmet.

Sorry for the blurness, GNex doesn't have the greatest camera. (Although after today, even if I previously had reservations with the screensize, they were completely obliterated when I sat down and did some serious Bore browsin' while charging and having dinner.)

Also I think you guys were too down on the people here. The vast majority of them aren't that bad. Geeks and nerds, but what else would they be? I only saw 4 or 5 super obese people today, the rest were either "normal" or Demi-size. Maybe not even that big. And I didn't notice any smells until I got on the subway home and these four PAXers were in the way of the door and I had to squeeze by them.

Definitely some ass smell there.

But otherwise it was fine. You guys just like to blow things out of proportion.

This was a woman I shared an outlet with. She's 35 and the biggest gamer in her family. She said she almost cried when she got onto the show floor. :)

Also I don't see the big deal over cosplay. I mean if we're gonna say you shouldn't be ashamed to play a handheld in public is it really that much different to say it's fine to dress up for a few days at a gaming convention? I mean, OK, snicker at these people on the subway and trains to the place, but once inside? I say they're fine. And some of them are really good too. The bad ones, well, we laugh at people poorly dressed in society anyways to that's free range.

Also the concert at the end of the day was pretty rocking, even if I couldn't understand most of the white balding middle-aged rapper's words... Definitely looking them up (Super Commuters.) I liked 3 of their songs.

Meeting Sho Nuff was fun. Basically walked up to the booth and started chatting with the demo guy, trying to discern if he was Sho out of the three guys there. After hearing about the game and learning more about it, I figured it was a 70/30 shot.

It dawns on him :P More expert IRL trolls probably could have done more but I got my moment in.

Sho, it was fun talking with you! I don't know if I'll be able to play the game when it comes out, maybe on Windows 8 but I'm trying to switch to Linux... Aside from that I'm not a huuuuuge TBS fan. Sounds like you have a great buzz going though (two E3s running come later this year I'm sure.)

It wasn't even a real troll! Although now I guess you can't say nobody scary played it at PAX. ;)

:lol wow andrex. What sort of game was it?

Edit- Beaten.

I mean Sho can explain it better (although he's probably tired of it by now. :lol) It was a turn-based strategy game but with the grid replaced with these circles that determined how far you could move from your current spot, and PHYSX™ so like if you got hit near water that unit would tumble into the water. A lot of it was over my head, even watching people play it for 30 minutes I was still 40% fuzzy on it.

I did snatch this on my way out:

Spirit Camera was my Game of the Show™. I mean, it was the only one I actually played, but still. (So Sho's game could very well still be the best game there!)

Very very good stuff. My only concern is it'll be extremely light on content (I'm fearing 3-ish hours.) It just seems like AR games think they can get away with it due to their gimmicky and experimental nature.

And that time estimate is basically from me gauging how big the included AR manual thing is. It couldn't have been more than 30 pages and I had already "used" three of them in my 15 minute demo.

But aside from that, it was great. The AR stuff was done really well, and the non-AR stuff was typical(ly great) Fatal Frame fare. Iwata may not have been so crazy in changing it from a "proper" FF game.

I saw that game on the show floor thought it looked pretty sick. I will buy it to support fellow boreans :bow

A 3DS game is not "game of the show" - did you even try shit? Borderlands 2 hello? smh. underage.

Sho's game looks cool but that trailer didn't do much to explain anything. I'd have to play a trial. Is it XBLA?

I thought it was another garbage ass Tower Defense but if its actual TBS then I am chubbin

It was a good game and a phunky phresh experience. Borderlands 2 is the same old broken lootwhore RPG shooter jank. Jank!

Also I wasn't standing in line for more than 15 minutes to play a game. Like, for anything. Even the next Mario or Zelda.

True story: the AssCreed 3 booth was literally just for the PAX-exclusive (until two weeks from now) trailer and the line was three hours long. :lol

Oh and you're fricking welcome for those GW2 codes. :maf

what games were at PAX? the only new game footage I've seen is of Sleeping Dogs.  I heard Max Payne was playable but I'm guessing you couldn't take video.  oh, and Mario Tennis, which looks pretty cool.

Mario tennis has a practice mode where Super Mario Bros level scroll on a brick wall and you're supposed to hit enemies and coin blocks for points.  Neat twist on a standard tennis training mode.

It was actually pretty good. The AR is only half the game and it's handled well. The other half is basically Fatal Frame.

I thought everyone here says gamers have crap taste all the time, well it's doubly true for Spirit Camera. :'(

Game is gonna massive-bomba. I wonder if it'll outsell Xenoblade (US)...

Oh NoA, you so kooky with your localization choices.

What were Fatal Frame 1-3's sales Oscar?

I was iffy on the re-title at first, but with the new title and AR gimmicks and apparently more NoA muscle than Xenoblade or Last Story are ever likely to get (not saying much admittedly, hell Xseed has TLS), I wonder if it'll do decently. Well, decent relative to the series. Which means slightly above "not good."

Oh and Sho and I were wondering if you ever met him while he was in Japan. Or played Tetris with him.

It's hard to find data on stuff that sold so low.  Fatal Frame 1, I can't find anything on.  Fatal Frame 2 sold under 50k on PS2 and under 10k on Xbox.  Fatal Frame 3 was under 20k.  I'm not expecting anything decent for Spirit Camera.  Even if NoA gets behind it, it's not a great match for the 3DS audience.  RE opened just under 100k - something like Spirit Camera I'd expect about 50k in a best case scenario, probably more like 20-30k in reality, though.

As for Sho - yes, we met once in Japan at an Otaru night.  He was gushing about GTA4 (which had just come out) most of the time, and had his computer with him because his job was that damn busy.  He also met me an even longer time ago when we both worked for IGN Dreamcast.  E3 2000, I think.

...you worked for IGN?  :o

I mean I think 20k is the minimum it's going to get. 40k seems likely to me just based on Nintendo's apparent interest in promoting the game at trade shows like PAX. But we'll see. I'm no sales wizard, I just have a decent feeling. Maybe I'm just hopped up on Nintendo promoting the game pretty well at PAX (even though it's one kiosk like Mario Tennis and RER (although that's at Capcom's booth too I think), it's literally the first kiosk you see. It wasn't shoved in the corner, you have to walk past it to get to any other game) and the game itself being really solid.

Skulls is totally modeled on Advance Wars and Tactics, but without menu surfing and traffic jams. I quit working for Square Japan and moved to Haunted Temple in January so I'm still getting up to speed on all the subtle nuances of the game but it's a blast in multiplayer and the campaign mode is really damn funny.

Demi, the PAX trailer I cut was really fast paced and was just to get people's attention on the show floor. A bunch of people recorded short narrated walkthroughs that go into the nitty gritty of how the game works, once those get uploaded I'll pass them along and you can see if it's your cup of tea or not

So when professional cosplayer Jessica Nigri showed up dressed as Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw  — in a pink spandex suit with a more than plunging “neck-line” — she was asked to either leave the show or change into something more appropriate.

1. E3
2. TGS
3. GDC
4. GamesCom
5. PAX Prime
6. PAX East

Also, half of PAX isn't even about video games but tabletop/card gaming.
