Happy Anniversary. Thirteen years ago, probably the best console launch evar happened. Obviously, it's a shame how the DC turned out but with a turd like Shenmue, an entire system can get wrecked. :'(
-
I had a Mega Drive, Game Gear and Saturn.
But never bought a Dreamcast cause the writing was on the wall.
Blame me.
-
Even I bought a DC at launch! It was too good.
Of course, like any reasonable person I burned every Sega related thing I owned when the Shenmue debacle happened.
-
When I saw Shenmue get a 6.8 from Gamespot, I knew the Sega dream was over. I'm just glad Yuji Naka wasn't alive to see how far they fell.
-
Yep, got a Dreamcast, a VMU, Sonic Adventure, and Blue Stinger (holy shit, bad idea) for launch.
A fine system that crapped out on me in the middle of 2002.

Sega took the hit for real gamers everywhere by releasing the most sinister honeypot in industry history.

Try playing Shenmue.
Ryo, I want to teach you this move. As you push forward, kick and punch with a swift strike. Now, you try.

There, you seem to have a handle of it. Do you want to keep practicing?
NO < YES
BEEEEEEEEEEP!
I learned pretty fast to take the VMU out while playing unless I wanted to save.
-
VMU beep was awesome. I will miss it playing Jet Set Radio
-
I don't remember VMU beep in JSR?
-
It beeped all of the time when finding Cupils in Skies of Arcadia.
This thread reminded me of how U2K was going to relaunch the Dreamcast in 9/9/09 with hundreds of games, including a four disc GTA clone. I want to find the GAF thread badly but can't find it. Then I ran a search to see if I could get to it from Google and came across these:

So shenmue killed the dreamcast then? :lol
The system wasn't bad at all plus it had some great fighting games that ran at arcade quality.
-
Still bitter about SEGA exiting the hw business :'(

Shit console.
-
Shit console.
What are you complaining about? It had to be the best for your poor ass 3rd world country due to ease of pirating. STFU and celebrate non-Shenmue Sega!
-
Shit console.
I refuse to believe you hold this viewpoint.

If all of its best games weren't ported to other systems, Dreamcast would still be worth owning today. In fact, it still is. I have it hooked up to my hdtv right now.
Suck my dick.
-
i bought an import Dreamcast and then in early 1999 went on holiday to Japan where i bought every piece of Dreamcast sheeet i could (house of the dead 2 came out whilst i was here too - nom nom nom)
Great little machine - shame it got snuffed.
-
I still have a NIB Sega Dreamcast for emergencies 8)
I also paid out the ass for the broadband adapter. I also got an SD card adapter that plugs into the serial port, and I have no idea what it's useful for.
Why do I keep buying things?
Anyway, it's the last console I still feel nostalgic about.
-
I was real late to the DC party. Bought a system during 2006 with a trillion pirated games.
I then played Skies of Arcadia, Headhunter, Jet Set Radio, Grandia 2 and SHENMUE. om nom nom nom
-
Still bitter about SEGA exiting the hw business :'(
a real sega fan wouldnt be after buying the srga cd, 32x, and saturn
-
DC had a pretty good ratio of good to shit games, probably one of the best ones of any console.
-
It had a fair share of games, but since everything has been ported somewhere else, there's not much reason to dig one out.

I own and love my Dreamcast because of it's awesome SNK games. KoF 98, Garou, The Last Blade.. They were so awesome. I still have my Dreamcast hooked up because of Mark of the Wolves. Oh and Soul Calibur.

Stop being a rebellious hipster.
-
Genesis the best Sega system by far. Soooo many good games for that thing
-
saturn is the king if youve got a fat wallet and a strong stomach for ugly 3d
-
Hell no it isn't. Even on the quantity and quality ratio, Genesis AND Dreamcast have Saturn beat, including imports.
-
Xbox feels like a Sega console. Well I mean I own a lot of Xbox games with the Sega name on them.
-
Saturn and Dreamcast were a staple if you were a die-hard fighting game fan prior to Sega shutting down console development. IIRC, it was only later that Sony managed to catch up to any degree—with Virtua Fighter 4, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Street Fighter Anthology having superior versions of SF3:3S and SFA3, respectively, and later, ports of the best of the King of Fighters series.
After a while, the atrocious PS2 port of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 left the only reason to have a Dreamcast around.
-
The fighting games are what push DC over Saturn imo and all of its best fighters (no project justice though :() have been ported to other systems by now. Saturn, on the other hand, its best fighters have been topped ages and ages ago, making it feel archaic as a fighting game machine. Of course, the main exception for Saturn is VF2 but I'd take VF4 over it any day.
-
its prolly the awesome games
-
I think Oscar's just a masochist that likes having his eyes raped by shitty polygons
-
I feel ya, Oscar. Saturn still has some really uncontested classics. Games like Panzer Dragoon Zwei have yet to be topped. Maybe it's my nostalgia for Genny, but I've lots of nostalgia for Saturn too. Most of the games I played on Saturn were fighting games so maybe that's why I have this opinion.
On the other hand, Genesis covers all bases that Dreamcast and Saturn lacked. Just was the most balanced system to me, and it was the glory days of Sega.
-
I liked the Saturn quite a bit because its 2D library was amazing. I really liked CPS2/mid-late 90s era Capcom and a lot of their games were there on the Saturn in their arcade perfect (or near arcade perfect) glory.

Genesis is definitely my favorite Sega system (the Phantasy Star games, Gunstar Heroes, Ranger-X, Landstalker, non-shitty Sonic games, Contra Hard Corps, Rocket Knight, Thunder Force games, Shining Force, etc) and up there with SNES and PS1 as my favorite game system of all time, then it's up in the air between DC and Saturn. Maybe I'd give the edge to Saturn since it had more RPGs (although Skies of Arcadia is one of my favorite games of all time), but DC was such a revelation for me.

You should totally play it. It's awesome-wowsome. Even in multiplayer!
-
Genny > DC > Master System > Game Gear > 32X > Sega CD >>>>>>>> Saturn
You people liking the Saturn are clearly diseased
-
Not really. Many of them were importers and that's where the majority of Saturn's lineup was. I can understand liking Saturn the most, because it has a specific niche of titles, mostly arcade titles and rpgs. I just don't agree with it.
-
DISEASED
-
But Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragon Zwei! :(
When everyone else was playing Mario 64, my friend and I were having Panzer Dragoon and Nights weekend marathons. 8)
-
I remember the first time I saw VF2 I nearly shit my pants, I couldn't believe they pulled it off
(Actually owns a VF2 arcade machine)
-

Border Down, Mars Matrix, Bangai-O, Cosmic Smash. The DC still has the best ports of Ikaruga, Under Defeat, and Gunbird 2 as well (and probably some other Psikyo games).
-
Cosmic Smash :rock

How do you put 32X over Sega CD?
Sega CD has:
-Lunar 1 and 2
-Popful Mail
-Robo Aleste
-Dark Wizard
-Sonic CD
-Shining Force CD
-Shadowrun (JP only)
-Willy Beamish
-Keio Flying Squadron
-Silpheed
-Eternal Champions CD
-Rise of the Dragon
-Ecco the Dolphin with the superior soundtrack
-NIGHT TRAP and a whole host of other shitty FMV games to laugh at

The Dreamcast was shit compared to Genesis and Saturn. How the fuck can that even be argued? DC was exciting for all of 2 years and then all the best games wound up on other systems when Sega collapsed in on themselves, and it was never a really great system unless you absolutely loooooved fighting games.

How is this any different from Saturn? By the time 1997 rolled around, Saturn was dead.
DC had more than fighting games as well.
-
lol creepy old guy
weren't you balls-deep in the nintendo 64 when the saturn came out? that rich smell of the ex-nintard. smells like... aged andrex.
Sorry to disappoint, but I was largely playing PS1 and pc titles back then. I owned a 64 for Zelda and that's about it

...which just goes to show that the Saturn was, in fact, a jankopolis of massive proportions. It didn't even have the awesome DC launch line up. For fucks sakes, they "surprise launched" the fucker. Only Sega would do that.

The Saturn had better exclusives that weren't ported to other systems. That's pretty much all there is to it.
-
If Sega played their cards right, and actually kept the system ALIVE by the time I got a 32 bit system, I would have gotten a Saturn instead of a psx for Christmas 1997. I was a HUGE Sega fan, but the way they treated Saturn soiled them for me, especially after Nomad, 32x, and CD. You had to be a FULL ON BAKA to buy a Dreamcast like a year and a half later. Fool me once;etc.
Too bad Sony pulled out that FFVII magic trick. 8)

Almost every great Genesis game has been ported to other systems. Does this make it less of a great system? No? Shut the fuck up then.
-
getting hype for saturn when it was new = fail
getting that shit right after it crashed for cheap = win
get to play all the great games without holding out hope that the system wont fail. kind of like the dreamcast, cept with the dc everything got ported and everyone threw their system away.

To be fair, there were and still a lot of worthwhile games NOT ported. Also DC has the best versions of games that were ported like Grandia 2 and Shenmue II and Marvel vs Capcom 2.
Hell, only recently did we get an arcade perfect Soul Calibur, MvC2, or even VOOT, and we're just now finally getting a JSR port. So your point is pretty ineffective.

OUTRIGGER!!!!
This game was the business in the arcade, me the FPS-lovin gaijin moppin up all challengers
-
goddamn, I'd never heard of Outrigger. Looks like some kick ass arcade shooter action. To quote the main character from the live action GI Joe Movie: "I want in"
-
I played the demo of Outrigger on the DC, but never saw the arcade version anywhere in the states.
-
I donno if it ever came out in the States. I remember playing it in Japan and just destroying people...finally getting revenge for suckas trashing me in VF3 and VF4
-
It came out here.

-
they're talking about the arcade cab.
-
Outtrigger was good shit yo, even when you played multiplayer with the modem it was pretty damn playable.
Shame that Cyber Diver never got a home release.
-
n e one remember the name of the fps that you had swords with
-
Maken X?
-
ya i think thats it game was p good
-
I pulled the Dreamcast out of the tub the other day and noticed the top shell of one controller is yellowing SNES style. Anybody else getting this?
Also noticed the controller I got with the system is a different weight and build quality than the one I picked up later. (Thought about this on Himu's talk about mushy buttons, one has those, the other is snappy.)
Speaking of memories like the VMU's joyus glee, how many times have you guys had to reset your power supply?
I got my Dreamcast virgin roommates playing a bunch of stuff like Power Stone 2, etc. one hot hot summer and had to do it again and they thought I was going to kill myself.
-
I had to change VMU batteries.
-
I refuse to, I enjoy the greeting they all give me when I boot.
