I have 85 items on my wishlist. Pretty sure I have almost as many sitting around unplayed, between all platforms.

...I'll get whatever I can for my 14€ worth of trading card money.

My favorite time of the year :rejoice I can't wait to buy a bunch of cheap indie games I'll never install and then rebuy on Vita in 9 months :(

I'm sure I'm gonna buy all sorts of sub $10 shit that I don't really need or want, probably won't ever play, and might not even bother to download.

FUCK YOU GABEN, SO EVIL

I already own most of the games I'm interested in. There are 40 games on my wishlist, but I will probably only get 5 or 10 this time. I might get the indies from GOG if they're the same price.

I bought lots of games on the 2012 winter and summer sale but I've really slowed down with purchases in the last year. I still have a lot of 'big' games to play and a plethora of mediocre to good indie games. I'm only going to buy stuff that I really want at 5 bucks or less, maybe a 2-3 newer games like Dishonored or Dark Souls at up to 10 €. Not going to bother with any publisher or franchise packs, even though those are cheap as fuck they're not worth it if you consider the amount of time you're actually going to spend on them.

Dishonored.  Maybe Xcom (or go iPad), maybe Antichamber, maybe Far Cry 3 (Blood Dragon might've been enough), maybe Resident Evil 6.  Maybe range is like $5.

Hoping FarCry 3 is on sale. Only other game I'd want now is Civ V Brave New World, but it's not out for  couple weeks, let alone on sale >:(

What makes Steam DRM different from the old "always on" Xbone DRM? I don't really use the software much.

Steam doesn't have to be always online.

It has an offline mode (which now works reliably, thank fuck), which means you can play your games even when your internet craps out. Provided you've run them at least once. The biggest difference which pacifies people are the regular rock bottom sales.

It better be some love!
I've been having a bit of a rough week myself lately. I was just genuinely curious as to what Steam had in the way of DRM, didn't mean it as a slight or anything (even if I do prefer GOG for computer games).

Eh the no resale thing plus the ever present possibility of valve axing your account have to be considered DRM. But overall its a great service and app. It definitely needs an aesthetic retool though. Navigating through steam could be better

You would have to do some really sketchy shit to get your account banned right?

Unless you're buying tons of Russian keys, there's not really any reason to worry.

Pretty sure games just get revoked now if you buy shady Russian keys.

As far as I know, the only way to reliably get banned is requesting a chargeback on your card.

As far as I know, the only way to reliably get banned is requesting a chargeback on your card.

Even that won't get you banned anymore. They changed their policy about a year ago, so now they remove the game you charged back from your account, and then lock your account from buying anymore games for 9 weeks.

Played it a bit today, reminds me of ghosts and goblins mixed with castlevania. Can't tell you if it's a must buy yet, I spent like 10 minutes with it.

Rogue Legacy looks sick, any impression?

it's allright, you go into the dungeon, gather as much gold as you can before ending up dead and then use that gold to improve your castle which in turns improve your stat and unlock more classes and ability to play with (the barbarian class get a fas ruh doh scream :derp) there are 4 boss to murderize after which i guess the final area/boss unlock but so far i've been lucky to kill the first 2 as it's a quite unfair game (most classes that aren't combat ready like the wizard die in like 2 hits and in later zone the screen is literaly swarmed by bullets and enemies)

as you buy upgrade's the other upgrade start becoming more expensive and the gold that you don't spend before entering the dungeon again is lost which is somewhat annoying, equipment comes in form of project which are found randomly and then created with gold, some of them comes with special ability (right now i have some equipment which give me a hit to HP but gives me regen ability) but there isn't a lot of it... there are also runes which gives you stuff like double jump, regen ability and the ability to gain more gold, the runes are inside some very annoying to open magic chest as they require you to clear a specific challenge before being able to open them (for example the chest is surrounded by spike's and the condition is "take no damage") and of course after getting them you have to pay to unlock them

i like it as it kinda push my "must win" buttons but it feels i'm wasting more time dying than having actual progress and having to go everytime trough the easy initial zone just to die the instant i step into the 3rd unfair one is very frustating... there is a feature to save your progress in a castle but if you use it you forfeit half of the gold gained and you need all the gold you can get

it's a much better game than unepic for sure

The problem with sales these days is two-fold: 1) A lot of people already have shit tons of games from previous sales, including a lot of the stuff that keeps showing up in every sale and 2) If there's a game you KIND OF want that's been out for a little while, no one wants to pay the just "ok" sale price.  We all want to wait until it hits $10 or less.

pretty much.

that's why I though the last Steam Sale was mostly shit (other reason was Amazon and to a lesser extent GMG were bringing the heat).

Hopefully some games I want will be at a decent price this time around.

it's (almost) happening!

apparently one of the deals is Bioshock Infinite for $30

Dishonored and Borderlands 2 both $10.20 community choice sales, if/when they get picked.

Hotline Miami is $2.50

Only $9.99 for the non-existent Bioshock Infinite Season Pass. Be the first on your block to play the 0 all new story missions and meet no new characters and fight all the same enemies with a ton of cool new weapons that we haven't made!

unfortunately the steam community is terrible about voting for good games.  fortunately valve has realized this and recycles deals through dailies and flashes.

Loads of people still playing but unless you're a natural at it, prepare for a lot of bitching to come your way. The community can get quite hostile with new players. Like Eel said, just get the sequel. All but one of the levels from the first game were brought over.

Bioshock Infinite is the same thing as Bioshock 1, except with a different story/characters/setting. And you can zip around on rails.

Sounds like I'm done with this series for good.

i fucking despise steam

Every single time, I swear. :lol

I'm not asking for much, really. Store down for hours, credit card and paypal errors, getting locked out of buying stuff for arbitrary amounts of time due to bounce-backs that are their fault. Every fucking time with this bullshit, and they just never even attempt to get their shit together. Be nice if they could focus less on trading cards, and focus just a little bit more on getting their store infrastructure up to something resembling a basic level of competence. I'm trying to give you money, you fat fuck, so tighten your ship the hell up.

get an old Infinity Engine game from GOG and mod it up to modern standards, or wait for Project Eternity/Numanera. Dragon Age isn't worth your time.

It's a really weird, unique game. Without playing it, it's hard to tell you if you'll like it. If you've played cerebral, first-person puzzle games before, then it will probably be your kind of thing! Just don't expect much in the way of story/theming.

Elven Legacy Collection
Fantasy Wars
Unity of Command

Fantasy Wars/Elven Legacy - Hex based SRPG with mostly deterministic combat, no grinding allowed.

Unity of Command - Mixed tactical/operational level WW2 strategy game with tactical combat + supply lines and other higher level resource management.

They both have multiple difficulty levels and scoring.

Basically if you thought Xcom:EU was too easy/boring, these games will please you.

Unity of Command looks fun judging from the screenshots. I'll add it to my wishlist for now.

Edit: I've played many classic strategy games, but I'm not up for something too hardcore. Right now I'm playing Fire Emblem: Awakening and that will last me for another 50 hours. I also plan to give Xenonauts a go as soon as it's finished.

Xenonauts is great imo. They basically took classic Xcom, fixed most of the balance and UI issues, and added some new and interesting mechanics. Not on sale right now though.

I think I'm going to skip on Ys right now. I mean I can get Ys on PSP and have it on the go anyway so the Steam sale doesn't really entice me too strongly.

I did pick up the PC version of Hotline Miami though. For $2.50 I'd have been a fool not to.

I bought Just Cause today just cause it cost about as much as a Pepsi.

Same but I picked up the collection. The DLC may not make the price hike worth it, but it includes Just Cause 1 which I've never played so for like $2.50 between Just Cause 1 and Just Cause 2 including the DLC it wasn't too bad a deal.

Also picked up Left 4 Dead 1/2 at $7 which isn't too shabby but not great.

I've been pretty good so far, only bought:
All the Skyrim DLC, because I need to play another hundred hours of that.
All the Saint's Row 3 DLC, because Witches and Weiners.
Surgeon Simulator 2013, because I guess I didn't really need that $3.39 anyway.
I gifted my friend who just joined Steam SR3, though, so my work is done.

Also sold a trading card for fifty cents. I think the card thing is pretty dumb, but if some random asshole wants to give me half a buck for a picture on the internet, I'll take it.

Tomb Raider for 12.50 is a great deal.

And if you don't own The Witcher 2 and don't buy it for 5 dollars you're a fucking asshole.

I don't understand the cards.  Are they like tickets where you win coupons/games?

and the entire Tomb Raider collection is on sale.  Underworld and Anniversary are 80 cents each.  1-5 are 62 cents each.

Bought the Witcher 2.

I've decided that from now on though, I'm buying everything as a gift and just dumping it in my inventory until I have fucking time to play it.  That way, if it's the next sale or whatever and I haven't fucking played it yet, I'm just gonna find someone to gift the fucking thing to.

You can combine cards to create badges which just show up on your profile. Or you can sell cards for money on the Steam market which goes into your Steam wallet. Also some badges are trade able for stuff like profile backrounds, emoticons, and coupons.

They are a curiosity at this point. Movement is very clunky, which makes both platforming and combat quite annoying. Anniversary, Legend and Underworld are more playable, look better and scratch the same itch.
Title: Re: Steam Summer Sale 2013: You sure you want that game, kid? *ON*
Post by: Raban on July 13, 2013, 02:47:28 PM
I wouldn't say they "scratch the same itch", seeing as how the newer Tomb Raiders crib from Prince of Persia where the original game kinda blazed a trail with its awkward platforming puzzles. Whether or not you can tolerate that awkwardness to appreciate the more unique gameplay is something you'll have to answer for yourself.

Fwiw, I don't think any of the old Tomb Raiders are worth your time, for any price. The trio of newer ones definitely warrant a look, but if you want some decent PS1-era action adventure, just roll with the Soul Reaver games. Crystal Dynamics was kicking CORE's ass long before they showed them up on their own series.

Anniversary can't be bought separately for some reason so it's either Legend or Underworld. Leaning to Legend as the scenarios look cooler form a quick look.

I remember the second game having a cool Venedig level but I don't have enough nostalgia for these games to spend more than 30 minutes on the old old games.

Yeah I'm asking myself if keeping my pc on to let some steam games idle actually costs more money in power than I get from the sales of the cards. Still it is kinda addicting.

Underworld is a longer, but slightly buggier game than Legend. Other than that, they're very similar. If you care at all about the story, Legend kinda sets up Underworld, which picks up right where the first game left off.

Soul Reaver suffers from its age just as much as Tom Raider does. The controls are better, but the camera is shitty and there are plenty of annoying block pushing puzzles, and the combat was iffy as well. I would recommend watching the cutscenes on Youtube at this point. Soul Reaver 2 might still hold up though.

Black Ops 2 - a snip at $49.99 - down from the usual $99.99
Resident Evil 6 - a bargain at $29.99
The Witcher 2 is impulse buy levels at $14.99

etc etc....

I was gonna wait for Tomb Raider to drop to $10 or less (since I already beat it on 360), but $17.50 for every fuckin' Tomb Raider ever made?  Bought, bought, BOUGHT.

I'd recommend pretending that the Eidos Tomb Raiders don't exist and just playing through the CD Tomb Raider trilogy (Anniversary first, then Legend, followed by Underworld for story order) and save the new game for last.

So my pick ups have been mostly games also on console.

The Witcher: 1 and 2 for about $8?  OK!

Borderlands 2: Will try for $10.

Black Ops II: The online population is like Wii U levels of LOL, but it's easy to jump right into TDM games since there's always at least 1,000 people or so in that mode alone.  Also like that I was able to just install the multiplayer and not bother with the story mode that I could give two fucks about.  Playing with a 360 controller against all the KB/M users actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be.  The craziest thing is playing with BOTH- using the controller for movement/knife/jumping and the mouse to aim actually kind of works.   :o

Hotline Miami: This is way buggier than I would have thought on PC.  Will probably just stick to playing it on PS3/Vita.

Saint's Row 2: Interested in replaying this with all the PC mods added.

Tomb Raider: All of the games for $17.50 is a steal!  Might throw Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light in there just to complete it, even though I have it on consoles.

Also have recently picked up Deus Ex Human Revolution, Lost Planet 2, Mark of the Ninja, Mortal Kombat, RE6, Sonic Generations, and Velvet Assassin.  PC has completely replaced my 360 as the go-to "powerhouse console" at this point.

There's seriously no one playing Black Ops II? Wow.

There were about 1,100 people online when I got it last night and around 5,000+ online this morning.  Pretty small compared to the 360 and PS3 players online.  There's noticeably fewer people playing the game on PS3 in comparison to the 360 version, too.  Maybe about half.

It was always buggy on PC but there is a beta patch that apparently fixes most of it and gives some options (higher resolution rendering iirc)

go the the beta tab in the game's properties , type "hlm" and opt into the beta branch

Not really, there's only one thing that carries over from the story in the first game and you're perfectly fine going in blind.

Got Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Penny Arcade 3 and 4 for $15.

A huge complaint I have about this sale is that Steam barely seems stable.  It's a huge pain in the ass just to buy something.  I know the mobile application is a good alternative but damn, there wasn't this kind of problem last year when I was buying tons of shit.

So far I seem to be pretty restrained:

Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Giana Sisters
Half Minute Hero
Penny Arcade 3 and 4

The two or three things I want to get haven't had a sale yet.  Dishonored got blocked by stupid borderlands.  Sleeping Dogs was a community vote, so the DLC wasn't on sale.  I'll totally get Gunpoint when it's on sale, but for now that's up to the Steam community  :-\

It uses GFWL for cheevos, and nothing else your saves are safe, and if you use the script extender it deactivates GFWL.

...for .20 each  :shaq2

My theory though is that prices should continue to bottom out throughout the sale, and then on the next to last day I can just use the funds to buy whichever cards I'm missing to craft mah badge and have a little extra.  In theory.

What is the strategy for selling cards? It looks like they hit about 20 cents and stay there. I don't give a shit about crafting, I just like nickel and diming money into my steam wallet.

Prices vary by game (higher for less popular games) but they have been at this level since before the sale started. I'm surprised they're still this high to be honest. I expected them to be .5 each days after the beta ended.

Sell them the moment they drop. I guess the more the dedicated guys look at what they could potentially get for whatever crafting awards you, but that's too much work for me.

I think that as soon as you get cards, you should just sell them if you're not interested in badge crafting.  The longer you have them, the more are gonna be in circulation to satisfy demand, so the lower the profit.  Again.  All in theory.

Witcher 1 is not a bad game at all, and certainly worth $2.50. On the other hand, it's a pretty long game [35-40 hours] and you don't really need to play it in order to enjoy Witcher 2.

You don't need to have played the first Witcher, no. Being familiar with the world certainly helps, but it's not a necessity. You're likely going to be confused regardless, because they throw a bunch of politics at you that you couldn't possibly know anything about, but things become clearer as you progress and pay a modicum of attention.

That said, I liked the first game a lot. The biggest difference to W2 is the combat, which is rhythm based. Click when the cursor indicates, essentially. But even though it can feel detached, you're still required to change stances (depending on what type of enemy you face and how many there are), switch swords (steel for humans, silver for monsters), dodge and maybe cast some magic. You can also buff yourself and your weapons to prepare before major battles (there's a trail of hints leading up to each boss), but it's not really required on normal difficulty. There's a big emphasis on knowing what you're facing and how best to counter it, and although it's not very deep it actually makes you feel like you're the mutant monster hunter/fantasy pest control the game tells you you are.

If I were to criticise anything it's the length. The game kind of drags and the finale is just weird and nihilistic, but you can always stop when you get bored and move on to Witcher 2, which has a more intriguing plot that touches on a lot of the same things the first one did (human VS fey folk race tensions, political scheming, the place of purportedly 'neutral' Witchers in the world, etc.).

Torchlight II is the community pick currently; if you haven't bought it yet, it's available for the low, low price of $5, which I would encourage you to ignore and not buy, and instead spend $5 on basically anything else.

Next round of community choices is kind of meh: Dead Island Riptide for 50% off, L4D2 at 75% and Infestation at 75% off.  I accidentally voted for Infestation without knowing it was an MMO.  :fbm

Witcher 1 is a good game and a really good introduction to that universe and world but it's very janky and has a weird old school feel which is a turn off for some.

I haven't really bought anything during this sale. The stuff I want is too new to get deep discounts and the really old stuff I would buy, I haven't been motivated to.

Infestation is the renamed WarZ, which was a cheap cash-in on Day Z and was so shitty and alpha that Steam made them take it down until they rewrote the description of the game, most of which was either outright lies or wishful thinking of features they hoped to add one day. :lol

You can start button pressing ahead of time and the buttons don't change. The game had oddly hardish quicktime events (that one you mentioned especially) for a game that is otherwise pretty easy.

Dishonored AND Max Payne 3 are on sale.

If I could only choose one, which would you guys suggest?

Max Payne 3 is overall a better game IMO.

Not Max Payne thats for sure. It's not very good. It looks great, but the overall gameplay gets in the way of the Max Payne theatrics and thus using bullet time is not fun. It dosen't jive well with the rest of the game. It's a cover based game, so there's cover everywhere, so if you dive around you hit the cover(which is everywhere) and then you're taken out of bulletime and put into Max's response animation. The focus on realisim and animation hurts and becomes frustrating as say you'll be stuck on the ground and die as the game takes too much time showing Max get up because it's gotta animate it with really good detail. Add in a way overbearing story and the game just kind of sucks.

Looks really good though, but it's crap.

Copped Dishonored and Saints Row 3 so far. Doing a good job of self controlling.

Dishonored, Witcher 2, Sleeping Dogs, Penny Arcade 4, and Fallout 3 GOTY.  I also gifted someone BL2 and a different person the BL2 Season Pass.  Around $50, I'm pretty much done buying stuff now I think.  This has definitely been better than the last Holiday Sale, where I didn't buy anything.

I also didn't like the demo but that's cause I was trying to play it as a zero-kill adventure and despite it being "possible" I REALLY don't think the game is designed around that

:-(

maybe if I just slice some fools I'll find my groove

It's not that hard to do a no-kill run, especially with some of the powers you get later on.

It's no Ken Levine game, I'll say that much. It doesn't really go beyond "people are kind of assholes, but some are decent". The Outside is the only source of overt pretension, but he only shows up to be passive agressive towards you and the rest of humanity a handful of times. I think you actually have to seek him out (by collecting runes) to hear all of what he has to say. It's really just modern Thief whith non-shit (optional) combat.

As far as stealthing through goes: There are a ton of easy routes, but it takes some time to adjust how acute the guard's senses are and the usual stealth game patience. If you don't want to sit around for five minutes and watch patrols, get the power that lets you see through walls (and later vision cones), throw things to distract them and abuse the hell out of sleep darts. Blink everywhere, all the time. There are equipment upgrades down the line that help a lot as well. Stealth boots that silence your walking and later running, greater jump heights, the usual.

Give Dishonored a chance you guys. :'(

Dishonored was one of the my favorite games from last year, it's a legitimately good game that has far more gameplay in it than Bioshock Infinite. It's also got a lot of openness to it.

Since we're talking about stealth, I started playing Mark of the Ninja and I'm still trying to find the right groove.

It seems like if you're killing the enemies...the game is jokingly easy.

But if you go for no kills on the stages, it's satisfying but sometimes is super frustrating and seems kind of impossible on first run.

yeah i like the game but you might end it up finding it repetitive, while you get new toys to play with as you unlock new achievement and each game has a random element depending which wonders your village decide to make, at the end of the day you are still just placing stuff around 5 hours in as you did in the first hour

Max Payne is great. Rockstar nailed that setting hard.

+1 Max Payne, but for the multiplayer, believe it or not. I don't play CoD or MoH or that ilk, so I imagine much of what makes MP3 multi compelling is coming from that. However, within the context of a Rockstar game, I enjoy MP3 multi nearly as much as Red Dead, which basically popped my cherry for multi. If Rockstar adds this stuff to GTA V, it is going to end me for other games.

I have not yet finished the game, but I  believe the unlockables you can purchase allow for no-kill runs. Then again, I also recall that it is possible to do a no-kill run on the first pass.

I'm sure it's possible.  I did it on the last stage I tried.  Just parts are kind of super frustrating if you run out of items to distract guards.

Sometimes I wonder if the Dust guy regrets going with that style.  Almost everyone's first reaction is  :oreilly or :kobeyuck or :expert.  Lost 2/3rds the audience right there.  And it's a great game, too.

Dishonored.  When I played it before it was just dropped into a random level and I had fun.  It's been close to 2 hours and I finally get to where the game 'starts.'  And nothing about the story is particularly engaging yet.  To compare it to Deus Ex HR: you have a brief intro to the world, characters, conflict, and a barebones tutorial bit.  Inside of 20 minutes you're already in the main game.  Minor complaint.  Another is that the HUD is huge for PC; I turned off some of it but a scaling option would've been nice.

and wow, everything Deus Ex (what iphone game?) is $6? SE/Eidos games have the steeping price drops.

Knife of Dunwall, yes. Absolutely.
Dunwall City trials, no. Possibly 'yes' if you're really, really into the combat and movement and want some actually hard (sometimes obtuse) challenges.
Void Walker Arsenal, don't know, but possibly same as the above because of the added options the trinkets provide.

The Sleeping Dogs DLC pack for $13.74 looks like it's missing some things even though it says "all available DLC." It doesn't appear to include nightmare at north point or year of the snake.

nightmare at north point and year of the snake are separate campaigns, so that might be why.

zodiac tournament and wheels of fury, the other two mission DLCs, show up as missions in the main game.  those are each like ~20 minutes compared to the ~2 hours of northpoint and snake.

Got Borderlands 2 + Season Pass at 66% off.

If you want to have "fun" with Borderlands 2, give this a try:

http://myborderlands.com/FourPlayers.aspx

It basically sets your game difficulty to 4 players, regardless of how many are actually joined.

BL2 is kind of "hard" as it is with just 1 player. You die, and enemies regenerate health.

4 players means that the loot should be scaled as such (the game says loot is better with more people), while the enemies are bullet sponges.

There are more enemy spawns, badass enemies spawn more frequently, they do more damage, and some bosses have more HP. No it's not more "grindy", but you're usually struggling to stay alive instead. I think it's a pretty fun change.

Anyway, it's easy to try it out if you're curious.

I would at like $10-$15 . The outposts are fun, the huge amounts of other pointless activities are not, and the entire package it comes across as a weird cross between Highlights magazine and mass murder simulator. If you just play it for the outposts, radio towers, and story missions though it's pretty neat.

Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY
Batman Arkham City GOTY
The Witcher 2
Dark Souls
Tropico 4 Bundle

its a lot more content, but then you're already getting more content than any other single-player game ever in the vanilla version, so...

also of course they add in more crafting items and misc shit, but again theres already shitloads of it in the main game.

i say if you want a AAA fuck awesome game than get regular skyrim. if you want a soul-consuming lifetime commitment to awesome then get legendary edition.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother to play it.  I enjoyed the shit out of the game, but your tastes run towards different stuff.  It isn't really the type of game you can dick around with for 5-10 hours and feel like you got your money's worth, so I would encourage you to wait until it's around $10 or so to try it out.

While I liked New Vegas, I didn't like Skyrim. Quests were vague and disjointed, main plot felt empty and generic, didn't feel like I had any impact on the world or choice in the matter. I also liked New Vegas' combat more.

Fallout 3 on the other hand was such a neat and tight package. Also with Bethesda flavour rpg's one every 5 years is enough.

I get that Skyrim is a good game, but I haven't been able to get into it. Playing your typical "warrior/melee" guy isn't that fun and I never found the quests that engaging.

I also got overwhelmed by much shit there is in the game.

I'm sure it's great if you do and I'll probably pick up the game when it's $20.

The combat in Skyrim isn't as good as in Fallout, neither is the story imho.

the combat in skyrim aint fantastic, but you have shitload more options in it than new vegas. ive been a conjurer, mage, warrior, and a thief all with my one character. fallout is fun but you get your usual fps guns + some fun explosives and melee weapons.

and yeah the story is balls (but so is new vegas' come on now); the boring dialog is just justification to go out and explore more. in skyrim's defense tho it is pretty awesome when you read through an in-game book and then hours later stumble across something that lets you explore what you were reading about.

The only expansion I played in FO3 was the first one, and it was ok.

I have come to the conclusion that, shock of all shocks, I'm a Bethesda fanthing.  I like big open worlds where I can just wander around and do shit.  Fallout 4 is probably my most anticipated game since Diablo 3.

I had a hard time getting into New Vegas... spent about five hours playing it and it just didn't click.  It's going on my BACKLOG'N list of shit that I'm gonna catass between semesters starting next weekend, though.

same. when i was a little nerd i always used to look at 8- and 16-bit games and say "someday you'll be able to walk to that stuff in the background and instead of world maps you'll be able to go around and look at EVERYTHING :derp " when i left the vault in fo3 i knew that moment had finally come 8)

exploration in nv sucks and there arent a lot of elaborate quests, so youre left with a lot of dialog and short fetch quests. dunno what people see in it.

I *do* find post-apocalyptic shit awesome, fully enjoyed all of the old Black Isle stuff, and STILL couldn't get into New Vegas.  I've also only ever really fully enjoyed two Bethesda games... but they were the last two they've done, and I loved the everliving fuck out of both of them.

The problem I had with Skyrim is that there is too much shit to do.  So I thought "Well, someday I'm going to take a week vacation from work and just goon out on the game."  Problem is that I never take a week's vacation and if I do, I think of other things to do.

So I've put maybe two hours into the game at most.

You don't have to complete every single quest with every character. I split it up through different playthroughs. My warrior orc stayed away from anything that had to do with magic, my rogue didn't want to help anyone except herself, and my conjurer mostly wanted to craft things.

I'm tempted to buy the expansions, but it's a bit too pricey for my taste.

yeah you gotta find an interesting quest on your list, maybe find a couple thats on the way, and then deactivate all other quest markers. even then you'll acquire a couple more quests on the way, but stick to your guns and keep on going for that original goal. you can also find one of the main story quests like the thieves guild or the magic school and complete one of those if you want an endpoint. or you can be like me and point at a part of the map and then go there and clear out every level you come across.

Old World Blues is incredible. The story in Dead Money is good but the restrictions on gameplay early on really suck. I never got too far in the other two.

If you log in once every 8 hour or so and you're at least a level 5 user, vote in the community choice sales.  Doing so gets you cards for the summer badge, which you can sell.  They were going for like .25 or so for a while, but they're down to about .15 now.

So I'm assuming today and tomorrow are just "best of" recaps?  So unless you get a flash deal, might as well buy all the cheap indie stuff now.

Trying to not fall into the temptation that is Bioshock Infinite.  I've got like a half dozen AAA games (DmC, Batman AC, Binary Domain, Dishonered, Borderlands 2, etc...) I can play between now and winter sale when it'll probably be cheaper, but I love Bioshock (even really enjoyed Bioshock 2!) and it's temptinggggggg.  The art direction is so nice looking.

All I got was Devil May Cry 4 for $5, and it's kinda surprising how well that game still holds up. Even though I really enjoyed Ninja Theory's take, there's this sense of mathematical precision in 4's combat that just isn't present in DmC. Even with Nero's limited stable of combos, I'm having way more fun.

I really adored the fit and finish of DmC, but both the combat and level design doesn't hold a candle to the previous games. I especially love the way that DMC4 still clearly has a bit of that Resident Evil DNA in it. Fixed camera :heartbeat

I bought more than I thought I would (includes gifts):

Castle Crashers
Crysis Collection (Crysis + Warhead + Wars)
Doom 3: BFG Edition
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams
Grid 2
Half Minute Hero
Half Life Collection
The Last Remnant
Mark of the Ninja
Penny Arcade blah blah blah 3
Penny Arcade blah blah blah 4
Rogue Legacy aka Rouge Legacy
Sleeping Dogs
Terraria
Tomb Raider
You Need a Budget

I gave out a bunch of games as gifts too so the total is about $200.  I give no fucks.

The big improvement for me this year over last year is that I bought games I actually want to play.  Last year I just bought shit that had 66-75 percent price reductions, not knowing or caring if I was going to get around to playing these games.  As a result I bought a bunch of RTS games, games that I never have time to get around to.

Eh the no resale thing plus the ever present possibility of valve axing your account have to be considered DRM. But overall its a great service and app. It definitely needs an aesthetic retool though. Navigating through steam could be better

Yeah Steam as software blows.

Well it is sluggish and there are a dozen of issues left that are obviously low priority, like assigning games to categories one by one. At least we can limit download speeds now.

IMO the early part of the game where you arrive at Hadley's Hope is worth seeing for a few bucks.

Bought RAGE :larry
:fbm

RAGE was probably the last good FPS imo as a non-FPS fan (tbf, haven't played Blood Dragon/Infinite/Halo4/Resistance3/any recent CoD).  The graphics & art direction are insane, the combat is really good, and the driving bits take like 30-60 seconds every hour and people made a big deal out of them but they don't bring it down at all.  The only problem is the game is way too short and story isn't great and the couple of sewer bits suck.  But as an old-school run n' gun FPS it plays great and looks great.
