Title: Bluemax presents, the Borian's guide to American College Football!
Post by: bluemax on August 29, 2013, 02:15:09 AM
Greetings! As probably none of you know, I used to write the CFB threads over on that other site that I was unfairly permanently banned from. I enjoyed doing this mostly because I am a big time nerd and I like talking about college football a lot. Due to my inability to to post where I used to, I thought I'd try bringing things here, of course I know that the Bore is not the biggest sports site on the internet so I have decided to bring you a handy dandy guide!

Q: What is American College Football?
A: A team based sport played at many accredited Universities across the United State of America. It is relatively similar to the form of Grid Iron football played by the National Football League.

Q: Why would anyone ever want to watch a bunch of college kids when the superior pro game exists?
A: A variety of reasons, perhaps you live in a location without a pro team, perhaps you don't like the stale, corporate atmosphere and rising ticket prices of the NFL, perhaps you enjoy marching bands or coeds, or perhaps you enjoy the varying styles of play present in the college game rather than the homogeneous style of the pro game.

Q: Aren't the college players paid anyhow?
A: Well they do get scholarships, and sure a number are likely paid under the table, but most fans like to ignore this fact! Ignorance is bliss!

Q: Is it true they don't have playoffs?
A: At the Division 1 or Football Bowl Subdivision level (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_Bowl_Subdivision#Football_Bowl_Subdivision), yes. But this is the last season that this is the case. Starting next year there will be a mini playoff.

Q: Why only a mini playoff?
A: Because there's like 130 teams at D1 and ostensibly they do have to go to class. Also college football is kind of an elitist thing that tends to favor old money institutions over johnny come latelies.

Q: 130 teams!?! How do they make that work?
A: Most teams are members of mini leagues called conferences (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_conferences). These conferences are generally (but less so these days) grouped by geographic proximity and a vague sense of ideals.

Q: Explain these conferences to me. I keep hearing about Power Conferences and the Automatic Qualifiers and so on.
A: Automatic qualifiers and power conferences are more or less the same thing. They're generally the biggest, richest, most tradition steeped conferences in college football and as such they control a lot of what goes on. When the BCS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_Championship_Series) was formed they basically struck a deal that said the champions of their conferences would get automatic bids to the big BCS bowls.

Q: BCS? What's that? Also this whole system seems biased and unfair!
A: Oh it totally is. Back in the mid/late 90s after another split title an organization was formed to help crown the official Champion of College Football (the NCAA does not award titles in Division 1 Football, unlike every other sport). This in turn lead to the creation of the BCS, an entity that basically took control of the 4 most prestigious Bowl Games (post season exhibition games) and decided that the 4 games would take turns hosting the BCS Championship game which would crown a Champion of College Football. Of course the system sucked and was biased in a number of different ways and the formula for deciding the top two teams was tweaked numerous times. Finally it was agreed upon that a playoff not unlike that of other American sports.

Q: Oh okay, well uh anything else I should know?
A: Sure, you should probably read up on the Heisman trophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisman_trophy), an award that is ostensibly for the best player in CFB but actually goes to the Quarterback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarterback) or Runningback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runningback) who put up the best stats on a good team.

Q: That sounds incredibly dumb!
A: It kind of is, but its tradition and College Football is all about tradition.

Q: Well whatever, who should I root for?
A: Well the simplest answer is, whichever school you went to for undergrad. If that school did not have a D1 program then the next most common choice is generally whatever school is closest to you geographically (for ease of viewing options) or you can just bandwagon Oregon or Alabama or Notre Dame or something.

Q: When does the season start?
A: Tomorrow 8/29!

Q: Any games I should watch this week?
A: Absolutely! While week 1 is generally the warmup week where big money schools beat up on directional schools from in their state, ESPN has forced a few teams into relatively interesting week one matchups they are:

#1 Alabama vs Virginia Tech in Atlanta 5:30pm EST ESPN
#5 Georgia vs #8 Clemson 8pm EST ABC
#12 LSU vs #20 TCU 9pm EST ESPN
#19 Boise State vs Washington 10pm EST Fox Sports 1

Obviously only two of those feature 2 ranked teams, but bot Virgina Tech and the University of Washington are teams trying to prove themselves. Virtually every other game on the schedule is likely to be a blow out, or just features teams no one who didn't attend the school will be interested in.

Q: What if I have other questions?
A: Feel free to ask! I'm sure I glossed over a lot of stuff, but I have no problem going more in depth on anything people are confused on.

Q: Will you be making these threads weekly?
A: Given the smaller size of this forum, probably not. I'll do big posts on Sunday Night/Monday Morning like I did in the past. They just won't be new thread starters.

college football sucks, most of the "fans" never went to the school, or college in general, and the bowl system is a blight on anyone who wants to see actual competition

fuck college football and the people who keep it lucrative

Expect it to be loud. Husky stadium is definitely one of the loudest venues on the Pac 12.

You should get him something to go over his ears, like Drew Brees' son during the Superbowl. He'll be able to hear just enough, and could take them off every now and then to hear the entire crowd.

I'm gonna go to U of M for grad school, but yea...I casually enjoy the team. Used to be a huge fan of the basketball team though. Michigan probably has the worst fans outside of Notre Dame fans. Two average programs getting by on past glories, so fucking proud. For what?  :lol

Manziel was sitting out because of what the school said was an "inadvertent" violation of NCAA rules involving signing autographs.

His first touchdown came on a 23-yard pass to Mike Evans on A&M's second drive of the half.

Shortly before that, he got into it with a Rice defender, appearing to mimic signing an autograph while getting up from a tackle. He ended his day by getting yanked following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for pointing at the scoreboard after a TD pass in the fourth quarter.

This guy is such a douchebag. :lol

Yeah Johnny Football is a grade A douche but the NCAA is a shady as shit organization. So there's no real winners.

This Clemson Georgia game is looking as good as advertised, most of the rest of week 1 has been the normal meh that week 1 brings.

Oh man, can I possibly be lucky enough for Georgia to lose in the first week?  We have a tough as fuck early schedule, too, so if we can get a couple of losses in the first month of the season, that means we're totally done for any bullshit title talk, and I can relentlessly mock my idiot friends for continuing to give a shit about this pathetic fucking team in this pathetic fucking sport as the Braves are hopefully making a deep playoff run and the Falcons are kicking ass again.  Georgia sports are the dumbest fucking thing ever, I swear.

Georgia goes down. Although they could still win out and play for the MNC since they're in the SEC and it was only a 3 point loss to a top 10 team.

What do you say to them, Creepy Old Guy?

Mostly I make fun of college football in general, but I laugh at them for being shitty sports fans.  The vast majority of them didn't go to UGA (I did, didn't graduate but I went for an extended up of tea) and will ignore area teams (Braves, Falcons) that are doing well to whine about the shitty fucking Bulldogs.  I can't fucking stand people ignoring teams that excel to whine about a shitty team in a shitty sport that has no real fucking playoff system.  Georgia fans are literally the worst fucking sports fans in the country, bar none.

Thoughts:

1. My Oregon Ducks looked fantastic even up against a cupcake opponent. The defense still looks young, and I question the continued use of Alejandro Maldonado, who ended two perfect seasons the past two years with game-losing failed FGs. We have a new kicker, and he was used half the game, but Maldonado should have been punted out.

2. Oregon State Beaver-shits losing to Eastern Washington gave me the biggest laugh I've had in weeks.

3. Boise St. losing to the Puppies is always great to see. A team I hate a lot losing to a team I hate only slightly less. Fuck the Smurfs, burn their stupid fucking field (even if this past game was away).

4. Johnny Manziel, despite claims that he's "nice, but entitled" is a complete fucking asshole and I hope A&M's season is annihilated by Alabama.

Good showing by the Dawgs, and they should stick around the top 25 for a few weeks since their upcoming opponents will be a cake walk.

Also, headed to Eugene for the Ducks-Cougs game in October. My wife's cousin is the offensive coordinator, so we're all going down for the game and see him, as well as my relatives who are Eugene natives.

Colt Lyerla forgot how to catch. What up, dude.

So did Huff.

Mariota's passing game sinks to janky dog shit when up against a strong defense.

Our offense gets confused when it's slowed down. We need to learn how to adapt.

Bad luck for Florida. Murphy looked pretty good though

everyone is pretty hopeful for murphy considering how bad jd had been doing. well see. we have a practice game next week to try and get him ready

Driskels just did not not develop at all. He is so talented, but makes slow dumb decisions. If Murphy just stops the negative plays that Driskel would cause, we can have a good season since our defense is so good.

Week 6 thoughts on the Ducks:

I think the cold & altitude of the Colorado game gassed our defense and offense initially. Colorado was able to throw some double reverse pass TDs and was tearing through our D line which was giving up 30+ yards more often than necessary. It was a typical slow start in the first quarter, which thankfully aside from LSU or Boise State has never really fucked us up in the past few years.

Things definitely started to turn around in the second when Colorado's defense showed they're not conditioned for 8-second plays and Mariota's ability to run. Tyner got his 5th TD, which is amazing for a third-string RB who just turned 19. He's the fastest person on the team, and apparently even faster than LaMichael James, who at the time was the fastest person in the entire NCAA. Tyner plans on running in the Olympics in Rio.

Mariota's completion % once again looked a bit messy, but he made up for with more rushing yards than usual. He's still looking like a very healthy Heisman candidate.

DAT was once again out for the week, but we made up for it with the powerful lineup of Addison, Mundt, Tyner, and Marshall. We're good to go until we really need him in the Stanford and UCLA games.

What a crushing loss. I was just talking to a friend about how much it sucked that the playoffs system wasn't in effect this year, because Alabama/Oregon/FSU/OSU would be such a perfect four team playoff. Welp, strike one.  :lol

Speaking of rivalry games, last weekend's Michigan v Michigan St. game was also a brutal dose of reality. Until this week I had never witnessed Michigan fans so annihilated that they couldn't come up with any excuse, snide remark, or smug insult.

And people who think the playoff system (which will expand to about 8 teams within 5 years, I'm willing to bet) won't lead to a FDR length era of dominance are deluding themselves.  After it becomes 8 teams, you'll probably be looking at SEC vs SEC championship games in perpetuity.

The Longhorns coach just might be the best coaching job in sports but I understand why Saban turned it down. He's what, 62? I think most people would stay put and continue to feed off an already established system, instead of moving to a new state and rebuilding a new program.

Anyone watch the 30/30 on Tressel/Clarett yet? I found it compelling as hell.

More I thought about it, I think there was a slim chance for him to go. I doubt he has any real loyalty to bama. And he's got a giant ego. Depends on how much money was thrown around.

I wouldn't have minded him leaving. Get him out of the SEC

Onside kick when you're up 14 with a minute to go? Even Steve Spurrier thinks that's bush league.

But it was hilarious to watch. :rofl
