Is Apple really so irrelvant? Do BrandNew and Shaka even have iPhones anymore?

I was expecting the 5C to be cheaper than it was. I guess it is just a 5 in a plastic case, though...
-
That's why I wanted one too. It's apparently hard polycarbonate so it should survive a fall. I doubt the screen's resilience has improved, haven't heard anything about it.
-
Lifeproof cases, brehs.
-
you're only allowed to use a lifeproof case if you own a tactical polo
-
Once you have a lifeproof case you have to wear it on your belt, right?
only after it has been inventoried on your everyday carry blog alongside your titanium toothpick case, swiss utility knife, and german-made ballistic-resistant writing instrument.
-
Guys, I lead a very active life and need the protection the lifeproof case offers.
(I typed that with a straight face somehow...)

so you sub as a painter/decorator? Or as a pole?
-
I don't see the point of upgrading. My iPhone 4 can handle all the apps I'm currently using.
-
yeah, I'm content with my 4S in all but battery life. That said, I'll upgrade when my contract allows.
the notable new feature on the 5S is the fingerprint scanner?

Dumpster inspector. :phil
Also the correct term is Polish ghetto dweller, DC. :wag
-
The colors available for the 5S look like shit. I prefer black or white.
Since my contract is up here next month and Android has made significant strides, I might just get an Android phone next.

Apple so lazy. Same chassis for four years running now. Not to mention it was kind of ugly in the first place. The 5C looks like some Chinese knock-off Lumia bar the exorbitant price.
B-b-but 64-bit you say? I have a sneaking suspicion that's just the foundations being laid for Apple switching to ARM on the desktop. No real advantage for phones or tablets at present, and more than a few drawbacks.
-
A couple of things from around the web:
The main disadvantage of 64-bit architectures is that, relative to 32-bit architectures, the same data occupies more space in memory (due to longer pointers and possibly other types, and alignment padding). This increases the memory requirements of a given process and can have implications for efficient processor cache utilization.
Why do you see 64-bit as helping performance?
In general, 64-bit applications run slightly slower than 32-bit versions of the same program because the pointer sizes are twice as big, and this can impact cache utilization and increase code space.
Doing 64-bit ALI and FPU calculations does not require a 64-bit address space, and this can result in faster computations, but does not require a 64-bit OS.
The only real benefit of 64-bit is to run natively without complex paging schemes when virtual address space is larger than 32-bit.
But, if you're paging on a mobile device, you are generally doing something wrong already.
...and then of course there's fragmentation.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just saying the transition doesn't seem necessary at this point. Which is what makes me think it could be more about Apple gearing up for ARM on the desktop.
As for the ungroundbreaking stuff, it's pretty much the same chassis as the last four years, the same screen as last year. As for the camera we'll have to see what the reviews say. I'm not sure it can be classified as a gamechanger. The fingerprint thing seems a bit of a gimmick designed to work around the patents Google must hold for the innovations they've made in that area with pattern unlock, facial recognition unlock.
Overall I don't think it's a bad update, it's just an underwhelming one, which everything more or less has been since the 4.
-
I'm finding my iPhone 4 can't run more and more of the big releases, and a lot of stuff runs poorly on it when it does work. I can upgrade in a few months and get a free iPhone 5s, definitely looking forward to that power jump.
How about looking forward to the Docomo jump?
-
I don't mind who Apple knocked off with the 5C, but I do mind how ugly they look. Lumias look way, way better. I get they want to send the "new cheap iPhone!" message but the industrial design looks like it fell off a cliff, like the DSi to 3DS transition.
The 5S is fine enough, the camera stuff is cool. Gold is such a tacky color though. If they had called it Champagne maybe that would have helped.
-
$99 for 2-year is mighty tempting, tho

When the N4 is $200 off contract and less than a year old, not really.
-
the last apple conf i watched was full of people saying "so slick" and a crowd full of hipster grandads.
Biometrics? like i fucking care - adds fucking ZERO to the mix other than "OH BIOMETRICS!"
my crack screened Iphone 4 will do me just fine (until the next firmware update when, surprise surprise, everything will run like laggy shit....)
-
$99 for 2-year is mighty tempting, tho
When the N4 is $200 off contract and less than a year old, not really.
I'm sure many parents are aware of this.
-
I'm seeing some complaints about how ungroundbreaking this thing is on forums but I don't understand why. It's the 5S, not the 6. It has a fingerprint sensor, better camera, and is faster. Plus they came out with a plastic iPhone 5! What more do you want from a half generation? I am curious why Polari isn't excited about 64 bit processor though. What are the drawbacks?
People get swept up in Apple craze every single year when they really shouldn't. Each year in between the major releases (3G, 4, 5) has brought us nothing other than slight spec bumps and little features (3GS, 4S, 5S/C). People just need to learn to temper their expectations for their off years.
Its also the reason I've stuck with their major release years and time it with my contract extension.
-

Because my family would be homeless if I abandoned iOS.
Small price to pay if you ask me. :leon
Then you'd have non-gimped Chrome. :rejoice
Just get an iPod Touch if it's that important.
-
:kobeyuck Sorry dude, I didn't know. :fbm
Edit- Although contracts are lame.
-
Why the fuck are all iPhones the same size? Why not 4" and 4.6" or 4 / 4.5 / 5" ??
Fragmentation. Developers are already annoyed Apple has a 3.4 inch and a 4 inch.
-
It's fairly amusing to me that Apple's tools for resizing apps are so bad. I was shocked that apps are hardcoded to certain resolutions (and then just doubled for retina), and they had to hard code another aspect ratio in when the 5 released. Like, lol. That's only fragmentation because they don't have a real solution to it.
Almost as funny as Apple's staunch refusal (or inability?) to implement any kind of analogue for Android's intents API. Gotta hard code cross-app messaging, too!
-
I'm content with my 4S that I got last year. I just want the new iOS 7.
-
They should just call it the iPhone C and iPhone S next year. 4 and 5 inch phones with 16:9 aspect ratio so apps look the same on all phones. So by this time next year, you can get a 16:9 iPhone for free with contract making it basically more future-proof.
It's about time someone put a fingerprint scanner on the front of a phone though, face-unlocking is a pain in the ass both because it's unreliable and because it requires staring straight at the phone.
-
They should just call it the iPhone C and iPhone S next year.
Or just like, the iPhone and the iPhone Color.
-
The new iPhone CU and the iPhone NT.

You aren't scared iOS 7 won't slow down your 4S?
The ios 7 beta run pretty well on a 4s (obviously not as fast as a 5) but run like shit on the 4.

I invented the color red

my favorite part about switching to android is never having to use that piece of shit itunes ever again. god damn that program can rot in hell. that think is destined to be the butt of a million "remember this?" jokes.
at this point the difference between ios and android is like the difference between nintendo gaming and pc gaming.

Since I'm on a no contract plan and my current phone is on its last legs I was hoping the 5c would be cheaper but what are you going to do :-\ I'll probably get a nexus 4 now (Andrex Likes This). The Moto X looks cool but thats $600 :(
Isn't there a nexus event coming soon? Maybe I'll wait and see whats google announces
My poor WebOS phone. You were a trooper. I'll always remember you :tocry
-
N5 should be announced at the end of October if the last two years are anything to go by. The new Nexus 10 as well, and a Kit Kat blowout.
-
Nexus 5 should hit within the next month or so. Hopefully they maintain a low price.
Edit: Dammit Andrex.
-
I was really hoping the 5c would be cheaper too...not going to pay 550 off contract for it. Would rather pony up 650 for the 5s.
I don't have a contract and am current using a Nexus 4 - aka the phone that couldn't hold a charge.
edit: Going to unload my Nexus 4 at Best Buy. Right now for some reason they are offering 250 in credit for it.

I didn't see the keynote but none of the slogans that article references suggests that Apple was claiming this is a big leap for the iPhone rather than just an update. They don't expect the average iOS user to buy an iPhone or iPad every year, but they have to release a new the just to keep up with the tech curve. Just like Google or any other smartphone manufacturer.
The new iPhones aren't exciting but they aren't disappointing.
-
Ugh. My iPhone 4 is on its last legs, I really don't feel like paying for a new phone but my contract is up with AT&T, what's decent and free with a contract these days?
Edit: lol their upgrade site isn't loading
-
If you can wait until the holidays, the best deals will be available. Specifically the ones that give you the latest phones for free when you sign a new contract.
Otherwise I would recommend the Moto X. Unless you want a 1080P screen.

Today is ios7 day. Can anyone confirm that the IPSW in the beta is the same as what is coming down the pipe? iTunes will be slow as fuck downloading today so any mirrors would also be helpful. I have 2 ipads and 3 phones to update today and somehow I doubt they will all get done.
-
Don't even bother, errors out all over the place right now, probably just going to get worse as the day goes on
Digital future!
-
What I'm really hoping for is to find torrents of the IPSW file for the 4S, 5, iPad mini so I don't have to get it from apple today.
I have my work retina iPad updating now with no errors yet. I'm not doing it through iTunes.
-
Zero Hero, what happens if you don't update all your iOS devices today?
I don't have one. :smug
They are for other people so I couldn't care really. :heh

7 is almost done installing on my 4s.

I found out that I can update early; I'll see if I can buy a 5S on Friday. People are into the gold for some reason, so hopefully I can stroll in around noon and buy a
grey SPACE GRAY 5S.
probably not worth upgrading my 4S to iOS7 for a day or two of use

On the plus side, I like the control center at the bottom, and the new notification center is nice. The multitasking WebOS layout seems unnecessary. Also, new camera stuff like HDR. I think they may have tweaked fonts a bit, text seems a tiny bit crisper, but that may just be my imagination.
My biggest prob with it is that it's too damned bright. I mean, burn your eyes at night kinda bright. I know Ives is probably all about the Sun God or whatever, but give me a dark option you fucking skinheaded hippy.
Also, pretty sure iTunes Radio just nailed the coffin lid shut on Pandora.

Yeah, but who wants iOS7? Lol. I still use iOS5.
-
Iphone is weak. You can only do so much on it.
Android is where it's at. You can do whatever the hell you want and the progs are way better.
-
iOS7 seems nice for the most part. I waited until the last night to try upgrading and downloaded it via iTunes on my PC. Went nice and fast. They finally included several features like using the camera flash as a flashlight, which is sure to make the people who put the 7,000 different flashlight apps on the app store cry. It's nice being able to quickly turn wi-fi on/off and no longer be limited by the number of apps you can place into one folder, but this is all shit that should have been available in the first place.
It was definitely up an upgrade from the piece of crap I was using :yeshrug

Wasn't somebody worried about the performance of Ios 7 on his Ipad2? Because it runs really smooth on the ipad2 of my girlfriend.

That was me, thanks :heart
-
I've heard that it's not TERRIBLE on iphone 4, just slower across the board generally speaking, and there are a few new features you don't get, none of which I was terribly interested in anyway.
I'll still probably wait until they've released a performance boosting update for it to bother updating my phone, though.
-
I installed it an iphone 4 I got off of Craigslist. Not bad but definitely laggy - much more so than on the 4s that my wife uses. I'm glad I updated to 7 (like the way it looks) but would definitely recommend at least waiting for a speed improvement.
Oddly, it was laggy as hell the first day but improved quite a bit the next :yeshrug

Why the hell is it so hard to download anything or sync apps? I must have downloaded the iTunes U App a dozen times already because it keeps prompting me to yet it won't sync up or work at all.
My contract ends next month, this pretty much seals the deal that I'm not getting another iPhone. Good jon, Apple.
-
Could you be more specific in regards to the problems your having with iTunes U?
Honestly a good rule of thumb is that Apple's system apps (ie, the apps that ship with the phone, so Settings, Safari, Calculator, Calendar, etc) are very well optimized and work very well with the phone, mostly because Forrester and now Ive worked very very closely with the hardware teams to make sure the apps work as near to perfect as possible (which of course doesn't happen, but it gets darn close).
However, Apple's secondary apps that you can download from the App Store (iTunes U, Podcasts, Apple Store, the iWork/iLife suite) are far far behind in optimization and design quality as compared to the system apps. There's obviously some sort of disconnect between the various software teams housed within Apple and the main UI and hardware team that is responsible for the phones. My recommendation is: if there's a third party app that does what you want, download that instead of an Apple one.

It kept prompting me to download iTunes U at the iTunes Store. Then it kept asking me to provide three security questions, which I did every time. Then I saw the download progress. Then when it came time to sync up, it showed that it transferred over. However at the end of the sync, the app was not there and iTunes prompted me to download the program again.
No big deal, I deleted the iTunes U content and the message went away. I appreciate your help. I'm not an advanced iOS user by any means since the Apple programs, until now, did the job.

The iPhone 4 runs like absolute shit on iOS7. Every action is laggy both visually and responsively.
Just curious but did you set the 4 up from new or restore from a backup? When I first installed ios7 I thought it was a big mistake...not everything run pretty smooth - old hardware considered.
-
It wasn't my 4, I don't know what they did.
-
My iPhone 4 is fine. Maybe even better.

Also, if you listen to podcasts, use Downcast.

Updated my 4 to iOS 7.
I give it 4.5 Mehs out of 5.
I like this new feature:

Damn, I'm sorry I missed out on the Oklahoma CAC Festival. It sounds like my kind of place!

The music program sucks. They moved the bar to the bottom of the screen. However they did put in an option to repeat a song as opposed to a playlist, which is new. Sometimes I'll listen to the same song 4-5 times in a row and with iOS 7 I can do that without a problem. The screen commands had a lot of lag for some reason.
The camera program is great and the only positive I've seen so far with iOS 7. Worked fantastically for a bunch of pictures I had to take today.

Joe- how much slower is it? Most importantly, can you still play PAD on an iphone 4 with iOS7???

So the 5s touch id thingy has been spoofed successfully. What was the point of this MUST HAVE technology exactly?

Someone please update the thread title when 7.1 or even 7.0.1 comes out.
Right now all this iOS update does is make it hard to access Apple's servers. :maf

I dunno, a little bit slower, but I'm not really noticing it being that much slower. I mainly just use my phone for derping around on the internet when I'm not at my computer. PAD still works, so I can't complain. (Several other games were completely borked though, but they were shit games that weren't PAD, so oh well.)

to sell phones. did it work?
Nah fuck that. Making it gold sold more than that touch shit.
And yes, making it gold did work.

Fortunately, there's a work around body part you can use to log in that can't be so easily duplicated...

Tricking the fingerprint scanner requires a really high resolution image of your fingerprint and then putting it onto a mold thing.
Now ask yourself if you or anybody you know has information on your phone that is valuable enough for a potential hacker to be willing to go through the trouble? It's just a feature to keep your porn and flirty texts private.

The iOS 7 experience continues to fail to impress.
I wonder what dipshit at Apple decided to put the volume slider on the same side of the screen as the previous track/pause/next track buttons/symbols. Wanted to skip a song while it was on shuffle and was treated to having it blast at full volume instead. iOS 5 and 6 had the volume slider on the opposite end of the screen and for good reason.
