Fuck.

YES.

Those cheevos. :rejoice
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII on Steam, the launch trailer made so happy ;_;
Post by: Himu on December 05, 2013, 03:14:54 PM
Doing finish the initial level cheev could be challenging because some areas REALLY have a lot of enemies - notably the prison - where it's very easy to get xp and level up. Not to mention that you can't level up at the initial game where you're stocking up some abilities. In order to get Card, it'll take 40 AP, in order to get Card Mod it'll take 100 ap iirc. Going to have to find a good way to also get W-MG Refine early without leveling up too. Fuck yes. :gladbron

You would have to run away from all enemies in the fire cave and the world map, and beat Ifrit for some 20 AP towards the 40. You theoretically beat the Fastitocalon-F for the extra 20 but you'd be killing them in the process but you're looking at 6-13 xp per kill, with a cap of 1000 xp required to level. So definitely possible.

I'm already thinking on how to do this run. :rejoice

FFVIII :bow

I've done a lot of low level runs, I've never done a Don't Level Up run. :bow And unlike those losers who use Enc-None or Enc-Half, I just card every enemy because I like the challenge. :shaq

Here are my rules for this run:

- No leveling up, ever.
- No running away except at the beginning.
- No Enc-None or Enc-Half except in that dungeon where you fight Ultima Weapon because FUCK THAT PLACE.
- Card. Every. Enemy. :rejoice If it's a human, turn them into stone.

Another great thing about this. You could hack the game files and make your party level 100. You'd be starting on hard mode from the outset. :gladbron :bow

VIII's biggest problem is that people suck too much to understand its majestic and progressive systems
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII on Steam, the launch trailer made so happy ;_;
Post by: Himu on December 05, 2013, 04:34:49 PM
Also they lack the imagination to make their own game rules. FFVIII is no different from FFV in that regard. I may make an FFVIII equivalent of FFV5JF next year.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII on Steam, the launch trailer made so happy ;_;
Post by: Positive Touch on December 05, 2013, 04:42:41 PM
i would love that.

ff8 is incredibly versatile; most peoples problem seems to be that they think they need to stand around in battles and grind out spells. making rules that force them to use other ways to get spells would really push people to fully explore the games flexibility.

The PS1 FF games are some of the most overrated in the series.

I realize you guys have rose tinted memories of those games cause they were some of your formative gaming memories, but they're not all that great.

Definitely give it a try, but make sure you're in 1999 mode because the graphics are very aged now.

But the gameplay itself is still fine for the age.

you know a game is good when you have to find your own ways of making it fun

To be fair, this is true for practically every FF since IV, often due to their customization systems. V-X are fuck easy. Unless you make your own rules. I personally find FFV easy as hell without doing 5JF, and you have to actually go out of your way to make VI challenging. VII? Pssh. Impossible, might as well  get some hack for the pc version. IX? Same thing, except there's no pc to hack. X? The only means is a no sphere grid run. VIII however allows challenges and limitations within its own game sub systems, similarly to V. FF has been "create your own fun" for a LONG time. FFXII and arguably XIII are the lone exceptions, since Tactics, and if you're talking about the main series, the nes FF's. X-2 is fun by itself despite being a broken mess.

I think junctions are fun as hell. I also like the characters and story. :yeshrug Much better story than XIII's, at least. VIII's story is flawed, but I respect the vision behind it. It had a lot of thought put into it and I'd rather have an inspired yet flawed story than something like XIII's, or IX's.

There is no super secret handshake. The game lays all of these options on the table. It is up to you to use them. There is also no "right" way to play the game.

And to be fair to the story, I've heard from a lot of people that many niggles people have with it are due to the translation. For instance, Squall never says,"whatever" in the Japanese version apparently, and talks in a much more apologetic, polite manner.

the art direction is good, really good like every other psx FF,however a lot of the gameplay system are either stupid or odd (you get spells by sucking them from monster and then use spells by linking them to stat and you can only link them to certain stat if the summon you have equipped on your character says you can do so... so for example you get 100 fire from some bug monster and then ifrit can link strenght with those and as long as you keep those 100 fire in your inventory you get a strenght bonus... another odd one is that monster don't drop money, you get a wage after a certain amount of dicking around and to increase your wage you have to answer quizzes about the game like "are fire monster weak to water attacks?",the monster in this game level up with you and your character's always need to get 1000 XP to level up,since the game works that way in fact it's completly possible to grind your way to level 99 right at the start of the game even though it's pretty pointless to do so) and the plot is convoluted enough to make you say "fuck this shit!"  by the time is over and yes i'm applying FF standard's here

you know a game is good when you have to find your own ways of making it fun

That's true. It does have a lot of tutorials within its menu though. So they are there, just optional. And you have to read them in order to gain SEED rank, anyways, unless you hit the guide and jam in all the right answers. The problem being that they give tutorials for the most tedious means of play and make getting many alternative means (card for instance) tough work.

I just disagree that the other FF's are fun playing normal. VI, VII, IX, and X bore me to tears playing normally now.

Has the best battle music.

I was with this game up until what the end of disc 1? Whatever disc ends with you trying to assassinate Edea. Then the game revealed she wasn't the villain and like the cool 1940s world went away for stupid rocket ships and invisible futuristic world and I just started spamming GFs. The game lost me.

You try to assassinate Edea on disc 1, but she's the villain well into disc 2. You go to Esthar and go into space (:bow) on disc 3.

It also has the best town theme in an rpg.

I really liked space, though. It creeped me out when I was kid and Rinoa goes ape shit.

Eh...good news, you can just equip those Ra spells to your Mag at the beginning of the game. After that, I'd delete all of that magic except that Ra spell and draw on the field for 10 per turn.

I've tried to play 9 like 3-4 times now and it just... bores me to tears. It's so slow and I loathe it's ability learning system. I hated it in FFTA1-2 as well. So it isn't just exclusive to 9.

I've tried 10-2 and stopped for some reason, I forget... I should probably pick up the HD re-release and see if achievements spur me to finish it...

Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII on Steam, the launch trailer made so happy ;_;
Post by: Himu on December 05, 2013, 09:06:59 PM
It is a great game no doubt. I just find the game play too simple these days. It hits the same problem as IV: the character growth never really changes, so you're stuck along the same path every time you play. This isn't bad by itself, it is just that it is never as fun as the first time you play it because you've experienced it before and there's not much you can do to alter that experience.

I still feel it is a top tier FF though.

I think it'd be much better if it had a job system that expanded upon Tactics' and faster battles.

You can put it in a window. Just keep the aspect ratio checked since it's 4:3.

As for Ultemecia's Castle, you only need to worry about the first boss if you've been spamming GF's. Once you've downed that one get the GF ability back, junction GF's again (IIRC Junction isn't locked) and then spam them to victory again.

I didn't even make an attempt. I was so pissed that they took all my abilities. Ran around a bit, found Ultemecia, lost badly, and never touched it again.

I still have FF8 & 9 for PS1. Not sure who I borrowed them from, but I guess they didn't want them back.

Well now's the time to finish FF8 at least?

Go in with the knowledge your stuff will be sealed until you beat bosses. Unless you're EXTREMELY confident in beating Ultimecia with nothing but attacks, anyway.

Once you've got:

Draw, Magic, GF, and maybe item you should be set to go for her. But IIRC there's like 8 bosses hidden in the castle before that to unlock all abilities.

I had some trouble with the final boss. I believe she is scaled with Squall's level right? The game was one of the early jrpgs I played and I was really bad at party management. Kind of just relied on Squall and well he was a bit more leveled then everyone else. Made for a tough final battle.

This was the game that made me fall out of love with the FF series. The junctioning system just did not work for me, nor was I interested in the characters or storyline. Great music and stellar art direction/setting though. And Triple Triad of course kicked ass.

Depending on her level it won't be that easy. If she's level 100 she could be one shotted. Also it is easy to get that.magic by drawing from the monsters on the island. If she's lv 100 and hasn't put much into her stats through gf upgrades it may be pretty tough.

Ulticmecia on lv 100 is no slouch.

Also Ultimecias castle is the best final dungeon. Sealing off your skills and being forced to choose which ones you want to unlock as you go through a boss gauntlet is genius. The mood, the atmosphere, the art design, the music. Jesus. Best final dungeon ever.

I loved FF VIII right up until…

spoiler (click to show/hide)
… I got to the end and realized I'd apparently been playing it wrong the whole time and couldn't get passed Ultimecia's Castle.
[close]

Just go to The Island Closest to Heaven, equip Enc-None, draw all the badass spells and then spam them to victory.

Depending on her level it won't be that easy. If she's level 100 she could be one shotted. Also it is easy to get that.magic by drawing from the monsters on the island. If she's lv 100 and hasn't put much into her stats through gf upgrades it may be pretty tough.

I remember going through all the FAQs at the time when I got stuck.  I don't remember the details of my character stats, but I do remember that they were such that I was basically fucked unless I did some seriously major backtracking.  I love everything else about the game.  But I felt a little… I don't know… betrayed?… that the game let me get that far and then slam into an insurmountable brick wall.

Yeah, the higher your level is, the harder the game becomes.  I'm sure that seemed like a good idea on paper.

Eh, by "harder" you mean "more HP." As far as I know, the game doesn't hit harder, outside of scaling said hits to HP level.

I think the only exception to that rule is the Cactar GF fight where you get 1000 damage even if you're lower level due to 1,000 Needle's attack properties.

Haha. Understandable. It's completely beatable, at that point though it'd be challenging. Believe me, I was at the same place you were the first time I played it. Even if your stats won't be full stats, junctions could would take care of that. That said, I take it as a compliment towards the game. You probably played it like VII, or other rpgs like VI, and if it were those, you'd be beasting. I like that the game gets harder the more you level. It single handedly fixes the balance curve 95% of rpgs suffer, where they're semi-challenging at first, but get easy by end game as you rack more abilities. FFVIII is the opposite. Rather than expand upon its progressive leveling system or explain it better in later games, they just did away with it. Boooo.

I think Ultimecia is definitely harder at level 100. She's a tough fight even at 50 because she can draw your magic and you'll lose stats.

I didn't even make an attempt. I was so pissed that they took all my abilities. Ran around a bit, found Ultemecia, lost badly, and never touched it again.

I still have FF8 & 9 for PS1. Not sure who I borrowed them from, but I guess they didn't want them back.

after getting zero (destroy the defense of an enemy) and aura (increase limit break chance so much it's possible to make every single attack a limit break) you've won the game no matter what and if you don't want to do that, there is a card that when turned into an item give you a bunch of potions that literaly make you invincible (it was the easiest way to defeat the super secret boss of the game)

These days I tend to just junction aura rather than spam limits. That said it is fun as fuck to do a run with Quistis in your party and you don't upgrade her health so she's almost always in constant yellow.

Have no idea what zero spell is and I've played ff8 about eight times.

oh apparently they changed the name of the spell in the european version i played to zero :lol
a quick trip to gamefaqs reveal i'm talking about meltdown

So what's the proper way to play FF8 since the tutorials don't teach you properly?

the summon have tons of different skills including skill that turn items into spells, doing that is a lot quicker than getting your spell from enemies and can also lead to get better spell earlier than you should... for example you can create curaga well in 2 hours in the game by simply using siren skill on cottage's...

So what's the proper way to play FF8 since the tutorials don't teach you properly?

Learn Boost first, for GF buffing attacks if you summon then.

Then learn Refine(-RF) element/item skills.

If Quetzalcoatl, learn card first over the -RF. Card enemies if you don't want EXP but want AP.

Then learn the Junction to stat abilities over GF buffs. Should be ELE-ATK-J for junctioning elemental (Fire, Blizzard, Thunder) to your physical attack and absorbing attacks a la SMT in defense.

Then do the GF buffs.

There are no proper ways.

You can play the game like a regular traditional RPG, leveling up. It could make the game a challenge but why is that a bad thing?

There are multiple ways to get magic: draw (hint: increase.magic stat immediately to make drawing painless. Quetzacotl, your first gf next to Shiva comes with Mag-J which allows you to junction magic to your magic stat. The best way to get that up at the beginning is Water. You can get those from fish fins on the beach near Balamb, then turn those into water with water magic refine which is a Shiva skill. Raising magic stat will guarantee 8-10 draws per turn and with other means of gaining magic you don't need to do it often because you will have created that magic already),  the aforementioned item refine allows you to turn regular items - tents into curaga, fish fins into water, aura stones into aura;etc - into magic thus making every single item in the game currency for learning magic, then there's magic refine that allows you to turn magic into more powerful magic - fire into fira, blizzard into blizzara;etc), you can turn enemies into cards - there's a card game, so you can use these cards.to build a bad ass deck - which you can mod into items which you can refine into magic.

Combined you can break the game in 30 minutes. Separate, you have options to make your own challenge. You could just refine magic. You get the three base element gfs in just a few minutes - ice and thunder at the beginning of the game, fire 30 minutes or so after unless you purposely grind on the field- and all of them have base abilities that turn basic items into basic magic. So you won't have to draw if you dont want to. You could just kill fish on the beach, learn water magic item refine, learn blizzard and water, then kill some other shit, learn some thunder magic refine, learn some thunder, or do the same thing and learn fire. You will hit those other spells eventually by way of the loot enemies drop. FF8 is very loot heavy and every item has its use. Doing a run like those won't break the game - at least early.

You could play the game carding every enemy, and modding their remains into items for high power magic. I can get curagas in 30 minutes, equip that to my HP and never die. Easy.

Or I could just get magic from refining magic.

One thing I do is create classes where only certain people can equip certain skills and abilities or junction to stats. Selphie is my black mage so she gets points in mag and may defense, her HP and def are paltry, and keeping her alive is a battle. Squall is my knight. Rinoa is my white mage. She can only use white magic in battle and thus only has white magic in her magic list. Most people assign junctions even across the party. You don't have to. FF8 would benefit so much from an official job system. The characters already have classes in the FF6 sense.

You could play the game regularly and be around level 50 by end game. You could do a no level run (carding gives no xp) and the steam version has a cheevo where you stay Squalls initial level the whole game and you do this carding and knowing enemy weakness. You could hack the game file to make you lv 100 at the outset and just play the game like regular. You could break the game open and never make it a challenge.

The great thing about FF8 is that there is no right means of play. Just be flexible and have fun with it. The game is fun for people who like it because it is a never ending quest for magic and the game allows you so many means to acquire magic, without explicitly telling which the best way is. Game is open ended and kicks ass and is for people who like experimenting with loot systems, breaking games the fuck open, or having different kind of runs or challenges. If you want a traditional DQ/FF experience you are playing the wrong game. And that's why there's a billion other FF's with their boring linear progression systems to play.

Eden is the only one where you can hit 255 in boost if you're good. But also the only one where he doesn't need boost since IIRC he can hit 9999 consistantly anyway.  :lol :lol

Steam community forums for the title is awful, but expected from Steam community. It's like GameFAQ's level with people bitching about this being released but not FF9.

I still haven't ever beaten the ATM. I always get it disabled and then run for the sake of time. IIRC defeating it lowers your SeeD rank score in the exam because you didn't withdraw "take priority."

I did say the game was garbage, but that was kind of a half joke.

I mean I really like the art design, think the character designs are Nomura's best, and love the music. But I do kind of dislike the story and the battle system did confuse me which lead to some dislike as the game went on. I guess it's more open, but you know yes I like my closed jrpgs. I like 9 and X's skill systems because they are easy and I know where they are going at all times. Here are the tightly made rules, now use them.

Of the 3d FFs it's the only one I played once and I played it pretty early in my jrpg fandom.  I beat it, but I had no idea what I was doing for the most part. So in the end I half enjoyed the game. I probably should replay it.

Post by: pancakesandsex on December 06, 2013, 04:40:47 PM
I found the game to be a lot more enjoyable (system wise, I like the story, FU) when I started playing the game by customizing my character slots, and not my characters.  The characters themselves are just "there".  They don't have much of anything unique, and are defined (ability wise) by their particular mix of GF equips.  Given that when the party splits you can literally move your setup from one set of guys to another, you can just create 3 "roles" and exchange those roles between vessels as necessary.

When you create roles, note which spells are useful for a role and which are not, then junction the most powerful spells you won't be casting to the stats relevant to the ones you will be casting, or to the abilities you'll be using.

When you need spells, play the goddamn card game, or convert items, don't sit there drawing for hours.  That's dumb, and you're dumb if you do it.  Unlock the item and card conversion asap.

Oh and if you get the right combination of GF's on every character, you can junction every stat on everyone.

Playing like this got me through a game I had sworn off after losing a save to a 3rd party memcard and a power outage.  I feel like this was how the systems were intended to be utilized since not once did I feel as though I was fighting against them.

Anyways, gj on owning a pocketstation, Pos. I always wanted one back in the day and I was so angry I missed out on content when the game came out. Plus, I downloaded the rom for Chocobo World I guess, and actually liked playing it. They really screwed the pooch with Chocobo World and Pocketstation support for FF8 because now, there's entire swaths of content inaccessible due to Sony making a gimmick wannabe VMU back in the late 90's that only die hard importers and psxers would remember.

No, since the US FF8 had it dummied out.

Well, okay, I think that's not true. I think technically you can use the Pocketstation to get the items from it since it is one of the rare few Pocketstation supported titles that came to the US and didn't complete remove it. But as far as spoofing it on a Vita? I can't see that, since the Application is only in Japan.

In the US/West, the only way to play the Pocketstation mini-game is through the PC versions or having an imported Pocketstation. You could get the Pocketstation items normally just by using an "all-item" Gameshark hack otherwise.

Well, finally finished the Dollet mission. Yeah, Himuro: 50AP. Finally defeated that bot. First time since I generally ran the previous twelve times I've played this.

My major problem right now is carding enemies when I'm not sure if they're weak enough or not without killing them since I'm trying to avoid EXP.

Well, that and Shumi Tribe cards so I can get three GF's with Card ability to slap on the three party members to spam it repeatedly after bashing the monsters once or twice until I have Enc-Half and Enc-None to blow through the game with.  :-\
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII on Steam, the launch trailer made so happy ;_;
Post by: Himu on December 09, 2013, 12:20:05 AM
Learning to card is a trial but you get used to it.

The secret is scan. Any time you encounter a new enemy, memorize how much hp they have, and then attack. It helps to not use Squall at all when attacking low hp enemies, and if you do use Squall, don't use trigger.

You wanna build up some damage and then card. It takes about 75%-80% usually to card an enemy.  The challenge of a No Enc-None/Half, low level run is that in order to remain low level is fun since Card is your only means of winning battles. If you're doing a low level run while carding, I highly suggest learning Break asap, because Timber and Dollet both have human enemies, which of course, can't be carded. Carding is fun because it has a huge risk but large reward.

The problem is, Scan is showing HP values for me. Just ?????/????? even after carding enemies. So I have to use Quistis or Selphie to bash an enemy once or twice and then guessestimate if I need to bash them another time to card them easier.  :-\

I adore this game and can't wait to replay it. I haven't played it in years. I used to play it annually. Haven't done that since 2009 for the 10th anniversary. The next time I play FFVIII it will have to be in Japanese.

This is a lot like reading southern revisionist textbooks on slavery :neogaf

Someone needs to chill. Here I'll help.

Now challenge me to a card duel.

ps3 version does not work with pocketstation. ps1 or pc/steam versions only

the ads for the Vita PocketStation app specifically indicate that it works with the PSN version of FF VIII.

Finally started to play the card game. :rejoice I dunno why I took this long since I beat Cid pretty handily with that one non-T-rexer but in the Training Area card enemy card.

Got Seifer's card, proceeded to smack the child that runs around the Garden's ass until he gave me Minimog.

Now to go to Balamb and get Zell's card.  :lol

I don't think there's anymore "rare" cards after that, so I can run to Timber to start the game proper at that point.

Remember to challenge QoC.

Card game quests are so bad ass. God I love this game. :tocry

The kid who runs around the garden dies on disc 2. Why'd you do that to him?

if there is one shit that's missable in FF8 is card and coincidentaly the missable card are all the strongest/better reward one, whenever you encounter a new NPC even for a fraction of second press the triple triad button... the location or situation doesn't matter, just press the triple triad button

I will when I have two A-rank sides.

Is Minimog missable or does the kids little girl friend have his card after he dies?

He's killed I think before the garden war during the norg uprising or during the garden war. Girl with pink shirt says he's "missing" iirc but it is heavily insinuated he dies because he doesn't show up afterwards.

Wait. No. Yeah he doesn't die. The girl thinks he's dead but you have to challenge her to a card game, kick her sorry ass, and then he shows back up. Google didn't surface anything so I had to remember, haha.

This morning I loaded up a save from my first playthrough. It is hilarious. My guys are level 100, their stats are shit, their junctions are basically "I have no idea what I am doing", I'm on disc 3, before Lunatic Pandora on the island closest to hell. I was missing some stuff so I made me some high level magic in about 10 minutes. Stats are still shit. It is hard to change this because they're level 100 and that means I can't use gf stat bonuses.

Still, it is hilarious. And hard as shit. I have all of the ultimate weapons for my team (Squall, Rinoa, Selphie GOAT) and so I fight some battles and I'm wiped out against a lv 100 T Rex. Everyone's HP falls between 7500-8500 and this thing does crazy damage and is fast as shit. It has 76,000 HP. :lol On Active I barely had time to cast a spell on him with Selphie and he killed Squall and her in that time frame. Game over soon after. :rejoice

It is amazing how I beat the game like this. I have to thank FF8 for being the for honing my RPG skills. After this game, every RPG felt pretty easy, especially IX.

I need to do a level 100 run again some day. Fucking awesome shit getting massacred by a goddamn random monster. Then again maybe I was under prepared.

missing angelo card if you don't challenge rinoa on the train, missing laguna card if you don't challenge after his wall of exposition (most important because laguna card convert for invincibility items!)

let me guess, there is some complicated rule where you can make card you missed pop out from the queen of cards because this game is FF8 and that sounds pretty random and stupid

Haha no wonder. Squall is the only one lv 100.

Levels:

Squall - 100
Selphie - 48
Rinoa - 47
Irvine - 16
Quistis - 12
Sell - 12

Hahaha no wonder Selphie and Rinoa's stats suck. I fixed that with some preparation though.

People who think FF8 was hard should be beaten to death with copies of Phantasy Star 2

Laguna stays in Ragnarok like the rest of the story. I just talked to him.

It can be. Depends on how you play. You can fuck yourself over.

Fucking island closest to heaven and hell. :lol I assumed that Squall was level 100 because the enemies there are displaying 100. But he's 53? What the fuck. :lol No fucking wonder.

I definitely jumped the gun. My guys are totally prepared now for the story. :lol It is really only the Islands Closest that give problems due to their crazy high levels. I always hated grinding that place as a kid because of that. :maf

Well, got around to playing this a little more. Beat Zell's mom after like fifty attempts to get her to spawn Zell's card.

Himumu should I lose the four cards later http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Queen_of_Cards to get to move to Dollet and then get Doomtrain and lose that to finish the quest? You said to start it now, but if I can just mess with card rules or something and lose them all (and then regain them back) in one swoop, that'd be faster and easier than chasing her down and losing them over time...

Lose a rare card to her. When you get to Timber, iirc you should be able to walk to Dollet.
