The new item that looks like a block with a gramophone attached to it is called the Super Horn... when your character sounds the super horn it wipes out all items and characters in the vicinity, including a blue shell if its about to pounce. Blue shells hang in the air for a moment before they hit you so providing you have one of these, you'd have no problem blowing it away... So the horn can be used offensively or saved as a defensive item...

Sounds good. MK7 gave you a very small window to mushroom-boost out of harm's way, but it was way tricky.

that, and I just bought hot shots golf 6 for $5 so I have my golf fix.  still, the demo for mario golf was pretty fun.

I was going to skip this, but the free game offer & that Nintendo Direct makes it look too good to pass on. I still don't think I'll like it as much as Sonic Transformed or MKDS, but it's looking better than any other kart racer. Good enough for me.

Those games alone are ~$150 new so it's not a bad deal TBH. Been looking for deals since I want my younger sis to be able to join me and older sis in Mario Kart.

I only hesitate because younger sis has her SM3DW and WWHD saves on my system and AFAIK there's no way to get that onto a different system.

Actually, I wouldn't mind one battle mode if it happened to be bob-omb battle. Easily the best side game in the entire fucking series. So of course it would make sense that Nintendo would get rid of it after one game. :punch

balloon battle is fun, but they tend to screw it up

I would say they did a good job with it in Super Mario Kart, Kart 64 and Double Dash. But their tweaks to the formula outside of DD have all sort of flopped.

So anyone see that Smartphone web app they're putting out for the game? It's kind of bare bones and the UI is really ugly but it's funny seeing Nintendo trying their damnedest to catch-up. Appreciated though!

So, I never looked into this before, but apparently if you are playing only two players, you still have to do it in split screen mode. You'd think one person could use the GamePad screen while the other uses the TV, but nope! Both screens output the same image. How is Nintendo so awful at this kind of thing? Here's a chance to legitimately take advantage of this mostly useless controller that was supposed to be the whole point of the system, and they can't do what Sonic Racing accomplished at launch!?

In the online menu under Friends, there will be a checkered flag next to friends who are currently karting, then you can join them from there.

Been playing this pretty hard, damn good MK. If anyone wants to play I'm majornws on there. Usually in the GAF tournament room though and they require that stupid ass friend code.

Picked this up yesterday. Maybe it's because I've been used to Nintendo games looking like shit for so long, but does anyone feel that the visuals here are at least a little bit of a step up from what what the PS3/360 generation can do? Very impressive stuff.

The only thing I'd like to see (and maybe there's an option I'm not seeing) is a two-player mode where one player has the TV screen exclusively, and the other is on the Gamepad.

Single player is whatever. You need GPs to unlock racers/tracks but that's it. After that it depends how much you like time trials. The online is excellent fwiw.

Yeah, dunno what the hell happened to the MK team. Sure, they've always been pretty good with graphics, but never anything stellar. Yet this game is probably the most technically impressive game on the Wii-U so far. Even better than EAD Tokyo's new Mario!

Someone should set up a Bore tournament... although I'm guessing there might not be enough Wii U owners here?

They basically function like rooms, but the rooms can have rules... you can have it so people join a team, specify whether levels are random or to a vote, you can restrict weapons, shells only for example.

You get a big list of popular tourneys when you pop into the tournament menu - 'no items', 'frantic /v/ weekends', etc. I see Reddit is represented on there too... but some people set theirs up to be private. I'm in the neogaf group and that's pretty good in terms of ability and people always being online...

It'd be really cool if they do update it again in future when they add DLC, maybe expand that stuff even more.

I can see a frame stutter that's the result of the game running out of sync with the display's refresh rate (59 instead of 60). As a result of that you see a dupe frame that manifests itself as a slight jitter and I can see it only if I'm actively looking for it.

Trust me, as someone who can notice this shit, it's completely irrelevant and a non-issue but an interesting point to bring up nonetheless. It's the backlash that happened as a result that's ridiculous and should be ignored.

I played this game a lot over the past few days.  It's moar Mario Kart, which is just fine by me.  I think the greatest strength of the game is that you can tell Nintendo actually gave a shit about this game.  The track designs are great, there is a lot of attention to detail, the music isn't half bad, the graphics are great, and a lot of thought was put into making some of the SNES retro courses easier to handle (this was an issue with MK Wii).  The character options are kind of weird but eh, whatever, at least there is a lot of them.  There is a lot of blue shell bullshit but a skilled 8) MK player will still come in first.

So far, so good!

I tried the tracks out briefly.  Just did time attack runs through them.  I would say that the while the visuals were pretty awesome, the layouts were kind of boring.  But SNES rainbow road still rules.
