All this money thrown at Namco to do it and it turns out this. You figured they had Mewtwo doing Heihachi moves or something along with other Humanoid characters, but no...
I watched about 10 minutes and was just bored by it. I really can't see this getting past this Evo (it's one year old IIRC?).
Should've never allowed nintendo games in.

High level sf can be dope as fuck. That match between infiltration and Wong where infiltration switched to Hakan :noah
And yeah that venue is legit. Must go next year if it's in a similar spot.

Hbox is the only one I can see having a good set against Armada, sadly.
Maybe but Armada has better consistency when it comes to grand finals overall. Just keeps calmer than Hbox who can be a little more emotional.

Armada is def the favorite against anyone, but Hbox has at least beaten him multiple times recently. I don't think Plup has ever beaten Armada.

Just got home. Any Mika players left?
So America hasn't been a SF contender in a while? Why is that?
Japanese players and Asian players in general can share knowledge and test bad match ups a lot more than people from the United States. West coast and east coast US players might play each other a few times a year at most. Top Japanese players for example though often play each other in person at many events, same with Korean and Chinese players.
People would also attribute arcade releases and Japanese players getting a heads up, but SFV never got a arcade release. Really comes down to a lot talent being close together and that raising the stakes competitively.

The Smash scene has a lot of international talent but the US still dominates most of the time.

I think it's safe to say this was a great Evo for everyone. Can't wait for next year already.
Will be interesting to see how Evo Japan pans out, I think they already tried something like that before and it kinda fizzled.
I don't think it's the death of the FGC but once the high of the event passes there's going to be a ton of questions asked why the hell was there such a massive drop in viewers.
I know it was on ESPN as well, but that's way below Ultra last year (Which was about 250K)
And come on, fgc- http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1248168
Eh. The standard of play was great and as good as 2016 but the organization was awful. Too many commercial breaks and awful staging.
Pokken overran massively and was absolutely dire watching.
Using the arena for finals was a mistake as well because the amount of empty seats made everything look super amateur hour. I think Melee ended up being the most watched game as well and SF V only pulled in 180K. I know it was on ESPN as well, but that's way below Ultra last year (Which was about 250K)

I know they want the highest viewer counts, but they really need to stick to the schedule and have more than one stage/use another stream to start coverage of the next tourney, let the other tourney finish up, and then switch streams or something. It would keep things running smoother. I guess one problem with this is that if someone were playing in both tournaments, they'd be fucked, though

The stream sound quality was absolute ass this year and a large number of people dropped SRK to go to the Topanga stream instead. That could have affected the viewer count by the end. And then there's ESPN2, as mentioned, which also can account for a drop in stream viewers.
Needs to be banned like Noel Brown and done yesterday.
Like I said in the GAF thread: They should make it 4-5 days (which kills Nacho's motivation to go) as a convention since the size of attendees and tournaments is increasing PLUS would give each niche (Capcom, Namco, Animu, Smash) a separate and full day for people to watch and not worry about times. People playing SF and Marvel would only have to worry about over-time on both those. But if someone was playing Street Fighter and Soul Calibur, they wouldn't have to worry about the time-overs if they got knocked out early and would have time to get to bed and be fresh for the next day/other game.
And yeah, I'm not sure I'm digging Evo's growth going from small community-ran tournaments into a big event. Just look at the Infiltration+Laugh video Morma posted about Evo 2013 and compare it to this year. Just 3 years and this is getting big bugets/productions. It's crazy.
Topanga stream was only about a 3-4K add for MK X and Marvel. The viewer drop was consistent across every game except Guilty Gear and Melee and across Saturday and Sunday. Smash 4 was 99K last year and peaked at 45K this year. Marvel barely broke 100K, Tekken 7 was as low as 13K at points (And that's going to be a Sunday game next year). I'm not sure if it's evo being done as an event or the LoL major interfered but after last years high views. It's worrying that even Saturdays that were pulling in 100K are dropping so hard.
On Sunday every game fell short of the peak viewer count from last year when compared to the game in its time slot, with the exception of Melee, which had the most viewers on the main channel during Evo with nearly 220K.

Wait this says Smash 4 peaked at 71K, not 45 (still a drop from 99K.)spoiler (click to show/hide)Also Melee had more viewers than SFV
(http://i.imgur.com/FdFhs.gif)spoiler (click to show/hide)I know the time slot had a huge effect on that, but still. :P Feels good after thisismyusername's post last year.[close][close]
I'd love to see another day added, Thursday-Sunday would give me an extra day of background info to get hype over at work, but I'm not sure of the logistics for most of these players. Then again I guess most of them are college-age and have summer off anyways... but they also might have work. Dunno.
Every competitive game's viewership has declined this year.

Fair enough. But the big boy games: LoL, CSGO and Dota, have declined. :snob
Put Street Fighter V in Melee's earlier time slot and let's see what kind of viewers it gets in comparison.

Marvel 4 wouldn't have this problem.

MvC3 is a dumpster fire compared to SFIV, gameplay and design wise. The one terrible thing they share is the comeback mechanic used in each game.

but it almost always beat SFIV in viewers because it's fun to watch and which was the point of my post. I'd rather watch Marvel's insanity versus the vortex fest and purposely imbalanced revisions of SFIV that plagued it between Super and Ultra. SFIV's comeback mechanic was the least of its problems after 09/Super. Not that Marvel is super balanced, but it's a game that can handle imbalance better and make it interesting to watch.
edit: for my own purposes, I wouldn't care if it's Marvel 4 or Capcom Vs. Capcom, though Marvel characters are obviously a huge draw.
Dude came in 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in that past three Evos. I'd be on the floor too after coming so close for so long.

Ok. Except ChrisG won MVC3 after getting 2nd for so long and didnt crawl around on the floor crying like a pussy.
I don't really care whether or not it "beat" SFV since I've been saying this whole time is unity = good, but it adds another point of data showing that Smash is a major contender deserving respect.

Guess 220k people disagreed.
Or a majority just left the stream going the entire time. :doge

Marvel insanity though is I touch you with a light attack and convert it into a 30-50 hit combo to get enough meter to kill your current character or swap your character out with the important assist character or anchor. If it isn't a light touch, its a grab. If it isn't a grab, its going to be assist spam.
The thing I respect about Marvel is the execution required to play the game. Execution though isn't a fun thing for me to watch (which is mainly why I respect Smash bros as a game but think its the most boring game to watch competitively). Marvel 3 having mainly Americans as the competition at major events is another thing that makes it boring to me (same applies to Mortal Kombat and Smash.)
Viewership numbers don't mean much to me, I've never thrown my hat into that pissing contest (like Tasty has been doing whenever Smash is brought up :doge). To me they matter when something like King of Fighters or Virtua Fighter (RIP) get a lot viewers.

Were all the side tournaments streamed? I was surprised to see just about everything recent had a tourney...even stuff like Kouhime Enbu.

well, there's much more to the gameplay and Marvel insanity also encompasses the scene and drama around the game, which kept escalating for a couple years. Can't really explain that though, it had to be experienced.
MKX was a great GF until SonicFox pulled out Alien...
There's more depth than what I said, yeah, but the main style of play for Marvel 3 has been consistent since the vanilla version. I've played a ton of MvC2 and a good amount of MvC3, used to follow MvC3 but stopped a couple years ago.
Kof looks like garbage, I just can't get hyped for it
ChrisG winning the finals was closure for the scene. That was like the only thing left undone.
As someone who only follows party games I find MvC totally incomprehensible. Street Fighter is always fun to watch because it's pretty easy to understand the basic game flow and there's a lot of play in neutral
Kof looks like garbage, I just can't get hyped for it
No bruh. It's awesome. :( Check out the tournament footage.

This is all I've been told by TO's in the past as well. So... *shrug* I mean like I said earlier, if you like Smash, cool. But like I pointed out in the GAF thread: "the FGC" doesn't just hate Smash for "no reason." There's some history there, as listed above.
