last i checked, poor whites weren't denied the right to read or write english.

Nobody that is living is being denied the right to read or write.
poor whites weren't denied equal housing protection.
poor whites weren't denied access to adequate healthcare.
over 40 years ago, poor whites could attend any college of their choosing, provided they had the money.
Are you really that distinguished mentally-challenged. There are so many poor people that couldn't afford shit. Black, white, green purple, whatever.
Basically your argument amounts to. My daddy had it rough which makes it impossible for me to succeed without help. Well guess what. Lots of people had it rough growing up. The great depression hurt most of the country. And unless you were specifically denied rights (not your father or grandfather) then I don't see how you deserve anything extra.
blacks were denied the right to read and write.
blacks were systemically disenfranchised, refused access to institutions that even poor whites encountered no restrictions to.
my point is, slavery -- and the subsequent institutional racism visited upon the black african and his african-american descendants -- still impacts a black community that has no sound economic footing in this country.
it was only 40 years ago that blacks were given the right to vote.
the idea that blacks and whites are on a level playing field is fantasy concocted by those, like yourself, who'd rather live in a color-blind world that doesn't hold the privileged class accountable for their passive role in the continued oppression of the black american.
