Official "The Bourne Ultimatum" Thread
« on: August 01, 2007, 08:18:47 PM »

Quote
There hasn’t been filmic eruption of bombast that uses this much physicality since the closing scenes of last year’s Children of Men.

Quote
This is Bond stripped of any glamour, but just as dazzling, as Bourne, without any of those nifty Bond gadgets, improvises with what is at hand, at one point, turning even a hardcover book into a lethal weapon.

Quote
Bravura doesn't begin to describe Greengrass's skill in mounting these complex sequences...This is, simply put, some of the most accomplished filmmaking being done anywhere for any purpose.

Quote
A knockout roller-coaster ride custom-made for adrenaline junkies, it’s easily the savviest and most satisfying spy movie in years, besting both of its preceding Bournes -- Identity and Supremacy.

For TVC:

Quote
The Bourne Ultimatum provides a lot more suspense and tension than "Transformers" could hope for.

Currenty at 96% at RT and 85 at Metacritic. Insane.

I've been waiting for this movie all fucking year and it's going to deliver.

Quick thoughts, as I'm still reeling from the awesomeness. This has to be the first action trilogy where the third is no doubt the best. The shaky-cam is still there, but it's just handled a shitload better. I could actually tell what was going on in the showcase fight and boy was it fuckng incredible. The way in which it was shot, the use of the surroundings, the brutality. Just awesome. The movie had a bit different feel to it than the first two, especially towards the end. I think Greengrass really made this movie his. And in the process he made the best movie I've seen all year. I will see it again in theaters, something I never do.

saw it this afternoon. totally awesome, and yes, oddly the best. the three movies form a very nice and realistic spy trilogy and by the end of the third movie Jason Bourne's arc is pretty tied up. Bourne shits all over James Bond, this movie was awesome. So many awesome countries and set pieces.

some of the things I really liked about the movie include:

- The "shakycam" fights never left me feeling disoriented/faked like the first movie sometimes and Batman Begins always did
- I loved all the different countries on-location and the gritty "on-the-ground" feel of each one. Bond movies feel too much like a Tourism Bureau video. Bourne takes you there.
- The facelessness of the "assets" who oppose Bourne.
- The lean meanness of this film. This is not a film made to sell Omega watches. This is a film made for Bourne to fuck shit up and the audience to watch in terror/awe.

I am really sad we're not getting a Greengrass Watchmen. :/

Snyder will make an entertaining, goofy movie, but Greengrass would have made the Watchmen movie that the comic book deserves.

Simply put, shakey-cam CAN ruin the experience in theatres. 100 foot screen + incessant motion and quick cuts = danger. However, I find that home theatre remedies this sort of thing pretty much every time. 30-60" televison set makes it much easier on the eyes.

Well, if you're sitting close to the screen, yes. I thought it was better than the second film. The only part in Supremacy where it bothered me was the apartment fight scene, and it was remedied in the similar major fight in this one. I grew to love Greengrass' style in this film.

I love how his review didn't mention anything about the acting, writing, plot, etc. Sounds like someone wanted to feel important. I admit that the shaky cam annoyed me at times in Supremacy, but seems a bit distinguished mentally-challenged to compare it to fucking Transformers

I went to the movies alone a few months after I first moved to Japan in 2005.  Went to go see Mr. And Mrs. Smith, even though I had already seen it back home...was bored and wanted to get out, and didn't know anybody at the time.  It was really weird, and a couple of girls were even talking about me (look!  He's alone...oh his phone..it's Vodafone!), although it kind of sounded like I could have asked one of them out.   :lol  That was the first time it ever happened.  I like to go the movies with people, even though during the film, there's no socialization going on.  But I suppose if something came out I really wanted to see and no one else wanted to go, I'd go alone.

I've never been more indifferent to a film series than I am with Bourne.  I don't even remember Supremacy, and I wasn't moved enough in either direction to write some conclusive thoughts, so I'll just tack on a few points:

  • Desh hand-to-hand fight rocks and is the one time in the series that I felt genuinely benefited from shaky-cam.  Probably the Bourne series highpoint; certainly the thing I'll remember most down the road.
  • Shaky-cam is otherwise fucking annoying.  I found it particularly strange the two or three times we see steady-cam shots, making me wonder if it was signifying something important.  In all likelihood, it's just an example moronic film making.
  • We're more beaten over the head with more flashbacks in this film than any other in recent memory.  More than V for Vendetta!  Greengrass must really be expecting the cretins to flock to this shit in droves.  I was feeling insulted as the conclusion was drawing near.
  • "YOU REALLY DON'T REMEMBER, DO YOU?"  Someone needs to tally how many times this is said throughout the Bourne series.
