TVC gets it.
I was originally going to go with Seinfeld, but Friends, which was originally pitched as a Seinfeld knockoff ("Seinfeld in New York?"), had all the things that made Seinfeld 90's-tastic (obsession over social minutiae, popularity, general prosperity) AND added sentimentality and dumbness. Also, it was less Jewy.
The right wing is regularly calling the 90's a "vacation from history," the implication being it's not really History if we're not in some life-or-death struggle with an evil ideology.
