Craiglist has such a cluttered process for posting stuff. Geez. But I'm sure we'll get more hits now.

And please don't call that number- it's not mine.

Not really.  I've already got a portfolio and a lot of experience underneath my belt.  It's not like graphic design is a dead end job, stupid.

Also you're a virgin lol.

Graphics design with no degree? Good luck with that!

I'll get out of college ready for a high paying, professional job. You'll be scrambling around wishing you went to school.

I'm a virgin, but I'll be able to take care of my woman when I get one :punch

Huh, I already have a graphics design job without a degree.  You lose.

I have three acquaintances that now work in the film industry doing graphic design or set design work with Photoshop, all of them make a ton of cash.  Only one of them has a degree and it's not even in communications or design.  Piece of paper is worth crap if ain't got the portfolio, son.

I'll show you my private crap from school later on, but I'd rather not show off my business work.  Two reasons - I haven't gotten approval to use it, yet.  A lot of it sucks because my bosses are crazy, micromanaging jerks that have no sense of design.  The stuff from work that I am going to add to my porfolio will showcase my technical skills and my ability to deliver what the client wants (by showing a client scribble and my end result), because quite frankly I think some of their personal design choices are ghastly.

Sitting at a desk designing ads, catalogs, brouchures, promotional material and online content is fruity?  ::)

Actually, I honestly lucked into this job - without it, I probably would lack the experience to effectively compete for a job in this career field.  I was applying to the company for a part-time gig to just help pay rent while I found a better job, and brought my portfolio from school to make it look like I had important stuff to carry.  At any rate, the CEO was interested in what it was, looked at it and offered me a job as their graphic design specialist.  He lated said he hired me because we had the same shoe size.

Right now, I'm miserable.  I am underpaid for above-the-call-of-duty effort I'm putting into the place, and the micromanagement is infuriating.  But it's across the board, not just at my position.  I'll be looking into work elsewhere very shortly.

Actually my mom has a masters in mathmatics and my dad has a BA in business or something and only my dad (if he even does) used their respective degrees PD, and we are very well off.

My dad does something with computers and buiness and my mom is actually an executive assistant, so I guess degrees are only for bragging rights sometimes, but someone can be very well off without one.

Why is Phoenix Dark given any credibility on this forum? The "man" is a known liar, and incredibly stupid to boot.

At most he'll be able to ascend to some cafeteria position where he spends his day waxing philosophical about what its like to touch a real booby. Chastising himself for masturbating too often to answer the door when a female Jehovah's Witness shows, the poor woman an unwilling victim to a horrible under-achieving male's fantasy.

I will say this for the record as an outside objective observer: Phoenix Dark is one of the most fucking stupid people I have ever talked to. No amount of book learning will save his future employers from the horrible fate that awaits them. Imagine, to know PD in person and witnessing as his mouth opens and pure concentrated idiocy is unfurled like a direct connection to the dark abyss.

I HAVE a Digital Design degree, it means SHIT. You know what these students go on to do? Color work and ADs. You end up some monkey for a large company doing bullshit work. The most successful Graphic Design people I have met have let their WORK and portfolio speak for them.

Any school offering a Digital Design course is BREEDING YOU for ADVERTISING COMPANIES. Face the goddamned facts, when it comes to digital design, creds dont mean shit, your portfolio does.

MAF's 100% right -- my brother is one of the most successful graphic designers in Seattle, with a show in New York this week, and he'll tell ANYONE that your portfolio is ALL that matters. Since no two portfolios are equal, there will never be a situation where credentials will matter. Either you have the talent and the discipline, or you don't.

My Brother has 2 years of college and works for a bank doing god knows what and makes at least 45,000 a year.  Not too shabby.

Very nice, especially if he's single.

Perhaps I'm so high on the importance of college because it's been drilled into me by my parents. My dad is a dentist, and he has his own practice; I'm constantly told I have to be more successful than him, which is a high task considering he makes more than $100,000 a year. At the end of the day I'm my own person, so I'm not interested in making more money than him. A single person making $45,000 a year would be in almost as good of a position as someone making $100,000 and supporting a 6 member family.

I have high expectations when it comes to standards of living, and I recognize education is the best way to get what I want. I know I want to go into business, but I don't know which field of business to pursue; once I get into the college's school of business I'll have a better idea. Business will really help me keep my options open. I'll be able to stay in business and make a lot of money, or possibly go to law school (as I've thought about); business is a great avenue to take in search of a career in law, or politics.

Currently my major is Biology, but I can't stand it and I want to switch like everyday, but I'm just chugging along to make my dad happy.  Fuck that though I think next year I'll offically switch to business.

Biology? If you don't plan on going to grad school, there's no point in majoring in that imo. And trust me, grad school biology/science is not fun.

Business seems like a great pick for anyone who doesn't know what they want to do. It prepares you for anything, while guarenteeing you a job.

You don't realize how influencial college professors can be? Especially in fields like business, or medicine fields. I know so many teachers and heads of departments it's not funny. I hate playing the "politics" game with them, but it's something you have to do everynow and then. They remember that kind of stuff, and it helps you in the future.

I'm not saying it can't help; I'm saying you don't need it, and Willco in particular doesn't need it if he has connections obtained elsewhere as well as a decent portfolio. I personally hire based on education last and initiative, intellectual horsepower, and social skills FIRST. The only bad hire I ever made was trusting a resume instead of my personal assessment.

You work in the graphic design area correct? That's very different than what I'm talking about; as you said, experience and skill are very important in that field. The business world is all about connections in so many ways. Internships and such are important.

Looks like that was a little misunderstanding. Oh well my bad Drinky

I don't. My brother does. He's my polar opposite. I work in software engineering as a manager. He owns his own graphic design company (http://www.sectionseven.com).
