Playing a game for 20 hours and not liking it? I don't get why people do this to themselves... I'll know within an hour or two if a game is for me or not... although then again I beat FF2 *TWICE* and beat the first Xenosaga, so I should be one to talk :P

1) That's over the course of the past 10 years, which is < 2 hours a year.
2) I would go to parties or people's houses where Smash Bros. was being played and be dragooned into playing it.

It never got fun. :(

But I thought you didn't hang out with people who played Smash Bros?  ???

Smash Bro will be a catastrophe if it even gets online. People will find exploits and the game will be destroyed. And you can be sure that Nintendo won't have a way to figure shit up when that happens.

Okay, it just occured to me that most of the detractors here are just trying to get a reaction. I would hope at least, considering some are intelligent enough to know that some of their own fetishes would be considered far far worse to 'normal' people than anything out of Nintendo.

By the way, one last thing. Does it really matter if SSB isn't as 'deep' as Virtua Fighter or other fighting games? It's supposed to be a party game with items and shit to make it frantic. The games are doing two different things. It's like hating on Shadow of the Colossus cause it's fighting system isn't as deep as God of War's.

Shadow of the Cololsus did suck though, BECAUSE of its fighting system.

Sorry, I just really don't like that game.

SOTC's boss fights were more like platforming than a real fight.  I didn't like it much either.  I gave up after the 8th boss because it just felt really boring.  Plus, it was kinda ugly.  I never understood why SOTC got so much praise for its visuals.

I liked ICO though, which is kinda surprising, since most gamers like SOTC more than ICO.

There is a sizable contingent of ninthings that would argue that Smash Bros is more than just a party game, that it is as deep as some other more seriously-taken fighting games.  It's featured at EVO now -- the largest fighting game tournament in North America -- which has an otherwise inarguably legitimate lineup (you can see the most recent here: http://www.evo2k.com/).

I don't particularly agree and I think, as it was designed, the game is purely a mascot-oriented party game, and not even as well done as Power Stone 2.  The substance it ultimately contains has been derived through exploits -- wave dashing, I-canceling, and so on -- and by limiting some of the options (items should be turned off, for instance) and doesn't have much, if any, affect on the people not playing it for sport, especially so long as the series remains offline.

And also, I would say God of War's system is about as deep as SotC's, but ho ho that's yet another tangent.

dude, naruto: clash of ninja 2 has been featured at larger fighting tournaments, despite it being based on the bloody roar engine and shallow as hell. this is because dipshit ninthings refused to buy a ps2, and will hype any exclusive fighting game on their system, especially if it has mascots or a license.

The new Naruto on the PSP is a very good portable fighting game.  I like the fact that you don't have to rely on the PSP's Dpad to pull off specials.  And the graphics are nice for a PSP game.

And all the depth of SF2 came from what was an exploit...

And it's a fuckload deeper than Powerstone. I like Powerstone as well, but Smash has way more lasting power because of the depth.

You peeps are really getting sad with the irrational Nintendo hate.

As a side note, I really dislike playing with items turned off.  It is one good dynamic of the game and removing them also removes a layer of strategy.

I'm not going to defend the fighting game community's stance on this -- they'll play anything you can attach a tier list to.  The point was more to illustrate just how popular that opinion is.

SF2 has a fair share of exploits, but they aren't what gives the game substance --and that game is also over 15 years old.  Beyond Smash Bros.' exploits and the different situations items create (in many cases, a random element!), there is NOTHING.

The legendary mercenary makes his miraculous Smash debut! This law-breaking news roared around the world.

He comes fully-loaded with cool and showy weapons that only he could possess. Fusing these together with the different wondrous worlds on display really does offer new horizons.

It’s not just Snake’s special moves that use military hardware – so do his smash attacks. Can that be?

He’s shooting something up in the air!

He’s planting something!

------------------------------------------

Side Special Move: Remote Missile

This is called a Nikita. It’s a remote-controlled missile.

Missile fired!

You can control the missile yourself! But since Snake is so focused on controlling the missile, he’s completely defenceless while he does so.

If things get dangerous, press the shield button to stop controlling the missile.

Standard Special Move: Hand Grenade

Try walking around with the pin out.

Press your special-move button to pull out the pin. The grenade will explode after a few seconds, so be aware of the time and press the special-move button again to toss the grenade.

Strong throw!

Mid throw!

Soft throw!

There are three ways to throw the grenade. Tilt the Control Stick forwards, not at all, or backwards.

In some cases, grenades you drop may get returned to sender.

And his recovery special move is...

Up Special Move: Cypher

Oh! Watch out! In times like this...

Shoosh-shoosh-shoosh-shoosh-shoosh!

Use his flying reconnaissance camera, the Cypher, to recover. Snake can’t fly, but he’ll do what he must.

He’ll use anything in the battlefield. That’s the crux of survival.

that cypher thing is pretty fucking gay.  some of his moves look too complicated/not SSB enough though.  I'm worried he'll be unbalanced.  I mean, what logical advantage does his nikita missle have over samuses lock-on missiles in this game?

you can make custom stages!

it's a actually a pretty complex feature.  you can choose the music, level design, and even background of the stage and you can send it to people on your smash bros. friends list.  you can even send it to a nintendo server and then the server will randomly send you a stage somebody else made.  they explain all the parts to it a lot better at the link.

Yeah..they seem to be notoriously bad at balancing characters. It will probably end up just like Melee where we see the best characters divided into tiers. I think they're more aiming to please the casual players for this game. Then again, who knows, maybe this one will have the potential to be just as competitive as it's predecessor.

I think mellee was a lot more balanced than the first one and I also loved that it was locked at 60 fps.  the characters actually weren't unbalanced, they just took a long time to get used to.  I think they might be able to balance snake since they're only adding a couple new  characters and probably not that many new moves for the old ones.

they were really good games.  if you have a cube or a wii, I would recommend picking it up.  basically they were strategy games where you command up to 100 pikmin of different colors (and attributes) to eventually bring shit back to your ship.  so there was a lot of resource management and of course you had to look out for anything harmful to your pikmin.  very fun game, don't know what else to say.  I think the second had a multiplayer mode of some sort.

Nah, but if by grown adult males you mean 30+ then yeah...it's embarrassing.  At my age I guess it's ok.  Even though they're desperately grasping at straws in nostalgia for the N64 (I grew up with these guys and playing N64 with them were some of my best childhood memories).

Pretty soon all fighting games will be filled with mascot characters. Soul Calibur is just the first domino to fall (if you don't count Gon in Tekken 3); I expect the cast of That's So Raven or some other Nickelodeon show to be making an appearance in Virtua Fighter 6. Nintendo's just one step ahead of everyone else, as usual.

And for the record, I usually play as Luigi (w/ the gay pink overalls).

Well, how old are you?

It honestly something that teen nerds and college nerds get a lot of play time with the most.

Corrected above.

Teenagers and college students who play bright and happy fighting games are nerds.  Those that have their shit together are not going to spend their nights playing Nintendo fanservice.  In fact, I've seen more college kids play fucking Super Mario Brothers on the fucking NES than I see playing Smash Brothers.

If you're going to spend your Friday and Saturday nights playing video games instead of burying yourselves in the nubile bodies of young women, shit, at least do it right.

It is fan service first and gameplay second.
