I like the song selection in Lego Rock Band, but am so unhappy with the load times for the Rock Den and the Vehicle Bays. Also, Lego Rock Band is the only RB I've ever played which freeze crashed. How much did Traveler's Tales mess with the basics, I wonder?

The RBN beta begins tonight.  There are already some notable artists on the service, including 3 Inches of Blood, Billy Idol, Flight of the Conchords, All That Remains, Evanescence and CREED. :o

That's good news! Too bad there's no course of action right now, as the creators.rockband.com and even the top page both lead to placeholder stuff  while they ready the entire site for the beta.

Man, Destructoid and the movie Legion are off my "cool kids" list: the page opens a fullscreen ad covering the webpage's content, and the Legion trailer auto-played with sound... they can get the obtrusive sponsors' crap to work, but their "creators" link is malformed. Jerks.

It is for both systems, but the 360 version will get all the songs (since it uses XNA to deliver the content).  The PS3 will get "select" songs which basically means it will get the popular stuff.  You will see Bang Camaro, FoC, Creed and so forth on the PS3, but Rain Dogs or whatever might not be on there.

...Am I reading that page's conditions correctly? They want US$99/year for a premium membership which will allow us to take part in the Beta?
Does that mean we get to keep the songs at least? Until now I'd assumed they had some time limitation where they could be test-driven but not kept indefinitely unless paid for as official DLC provided they win enough favor with fans.

You need the $99/year XNA membership to participate in the beta (which you could use to make community games and the like).  And no, you cannot keep any songs.

Also, the test drive for songs is for when RBN officially comes out.

I would say one of the highlights of The Beatles Rock Band for me was the clarinet part of When I'm 64. So wrong yet so perfect.

Ah. Yeah, I have no interest in country of the last 30 years, so I noticed The Gambler and just, er, stood pat, so to speak.
I had probably noticed On the Road Again previously and forgotten about it. It's such an insanely overplayed song in my family. :'(

Terrifying thought #3244117:
I was just wishing for the entire Achtung Baby album by U2 to come out as DLC. Then it dawned on me, maybe the reason there's never been any U2 in Rock Band is because maybe they're working on Rock Band: U2, or an exclusive U2: GuitarHero. :-(

After their comments late last year, it sounds like they hate the thought of avatars performing as themselves. They have songs in Singstar, which are accompanied with their own music videos.

But yeah, U2 is the next rumored band game, after The Who's comes out late this year.

It is a given that all the Harmonix band games will import, but I still think it is a waste of time and resources.  One thing I liked about RB was that they didn't spam games every 6 weeks and made nearly everything DLC.  Lego and Green Day have shaken my faith in them.

Debating RB/GH milking gets you nowhere unless you set specific guidelines on what constitutes milking.

Titles on the shelf at a store? Rock Band track packs count just as much and take up just as much room and easily outnumber GH.
Advertising for titles? GH does advertise for GHM, but RB has constant VH1 ads FOR DLC.
Effort put into games? Well, the track packs are lazy SKUs, whereas the GH offshoots actually have art made.
Standalone titles with no export? So it's a debate of selling DLC at a store means it's not milking? Then you're not debating milking anymore, rather just game exports.
(And considering they're near 90% complete exports on games now, that won't be an issue from here on out.)

There'll still be more RB games released this year than GH.

On a lighter note, JTAG 360s can now play pirated DLC. 24GB gets you all the RB DLC on the store.

Huh. I had no idea there were ads for DLC, since I live in Japan. Now I know why HMX says Rock Band is finally breaking even, if they're using TV ads (even limited cable runs) to sell stuff. Then again, MTV owns VH1 so they're probably getting a break.

It was completely overplayed on Canadian airwaves, probably because of Cancon, regulations governing that 35% of the songs played over the air must be Canadian.

My tastes are already pretty broad when it comes to music. I listened to The End back in high school, no reason to anymore: they play a bunch of stuff I either already know about or have zero interest in. I had friends who DJ'd at C89.5 back in high school, fun station.

Sadly the last year in rock/alternative music seemed REALLY weird. For the first time in 30 years, KROQ down here didn't do a top 106.7 (107) list of the year, instead just 20. :-/

Like, I barely listen to music on the radio, and everytime I do on 98.7 or KROQ, I know every song. I miss the new stuff.

You gotta wonder why Harmonix is in bad shape with Sony. It's not like they can't get special permission to post shit early. They just don't care to try.

Like how they spend 4 months working on the RB2 PS3 patch PAST the 360 the one and NOT A SINGLE FEATURE IS CONSOLE-EXCLUSIVE. It's all in-engine shit and there's NO EXCUSE why it would take that long, especially when the original RB2 game was only 6 months in development. Hell, they even LIED on it saying they added wireless Singstar mic support when it worked before hand and NOTHING changed after.

4 MONTHS. NOTHING EXTRA, unless you consider the half-assed bug fix to their star sorting. Where it gives you a star ranking off of the system's highest score not the most recent one, something that is 1 FUCKING LINE OF CODE. Yet none of the other bugs or discrepancies were addressed.

In 1 month, I got VOIP and online networking working MYSELF on a PS3 and I had NEVER done it before. There's NO EXCUSE for the shit they pull, yet 360 owners just assume it's all the same and they're treated equally or over-reacting.

Rich presence? Want to know what song your friend is playing from the buddy list? AGAIN, ONE FUCKING LINE OF CODE, and they don't do it. Oh wait, it's a REQUIREMENT for 360 games but a FEATURE for the PS3, so HMX doesn't give a shit.
Message of the day? Sony requires a button confirmation to pop it up? YOU HIT START BEFORE THAT MENU POPS UP.
Delete individual songs? Hell, shit as far back as Time Crisis 4 supports uninstalling from in-game. More recent titles do, too, like the Buzz! games.

Actually, I take it all back. The patch did have an exclusive feature on the PS3. You can NO LONGER browse the in-game store on anything OTHER than controller #1. You can GO INTO IT with another controller but can't even leave.

And the cheat codes STILL can't be entered on Japanese consoles because they're fucking shitty at doing the X/O Region check.
VOIP still fucking doesn't come through the headset. It's just on the TV. THAT'S ONE LINE OF CODE TO CHANGE THE OUTPUT SOURCE. FUCK!

Oh, and don't forget, the Singstar mics work, but ONLY IF the singer is using the blue mic and ONLY on port #1. NO OTHER CONTROLLER PORTS WORK if you want to use the Singstar mics. Oh, the red mic will work if the Sixaxis is on controller 2, but only enough to ping up on the screen. You'll still completely fail every song because it barely registers, making you think the mic is broken.

NO OTHER GAME HAS THIS FLAW WITH THE MICROPHONES. It's their own bullshit. And they STILL didn't fix the wavy-arrow glitch on the PS3. That's apparently what they spent 4 months doing. They said they tried to put in the Beatles vocal code, which was rewritten, so it doesn't happen on that, but they couldn't do it and gave up. I KNOW why the audio fucks up. It's a sampling rate issue when the PS3's audio I/O buffer gets filled. It's like the first issue you fix when working on the PS3 audio input.

They're goddamn incompetent programmers that get WAYYY too much praise for sitting on their asses. Let's not go into the abortion that's Rock Band 1 on the Wii.

RB3 better shine like fucking gold if they've spent so long on it. GH5 was polished to hell. Outside of the curious song selection, Expert drums pedal glitch and piss-poor game exporting, they caught up and surpassed Rock Band in MANY areas including graphics, playlists, party modes and venue design.

RBN is a great thing to be praised. It's a way for them to get a lot of great artists into the game. Now let's have Harmonix focus on making RB3 something to remember. Can you tell me ANY venue from Rock Band 1 or 2? Lego Rock Band, yeah. Lots of crazy ones. Trying to keep RB1/2 all moody and stylized, it lacked in a lot of areas. LRB showed they recognized some of that, but they also went backwards with it.
BOTH LRB and TBRB suffer from WAY too much busy shit on the fretboard. Whereas GH finally got rid of the scrolling pattern and went to a translucent black, LRB changed the HOPOs to nigh-indistinguishable single-stud blocks and The Beatles Overdrive modes just fill your highway with a ton of fruity distracting garbage, which is a PLEASURE for someone with even a SLIGHT red-green and green-yellow colorblindness (Like yours truly), which is compounded even further when Bass groove kicks in and adds ANOTHER texture layer. But yes, let's focus on how soulful John Lennon's eyes are, even though I can't see fucking 4 notes ahead.
(Counterpoint: Guitar Hero uses a fucking ATROCIOUS font for singing. Band Hero cleaned it up a bit, but it's still a fucking disappointment. At least they fixed the vocal engine in those games from GHWT.)

And don't get me started on the Lego Rock Band glitches, crashes and bugs. It was a total rush job. Hilarious because it lacks features that TBRB has, even though that launched 2 months earlier.

...

...

I'll probably pick up the Who medley next Thursday.
