So Intel is likely going to enter in the discrete graphics market in just over 2 years.  Thoughts?  Feelings?

I guess competition is always good, but have three vendors ever really seriously competed?

I'll believe it when I see it.  Intel has dabbled in the GPU industry before.  So far, Intel has yet to create a product that can compete in the high performance sector.

Their Larrabee architecture is supposedly the shit and we'll see samples of it running next year - which will knock our socks off.  Certain sectors are predicting that Intel's entry will shutout nVidia, but who knows in that section of the industry.

Intel has something that no other player in the market has-bleeding edge fabrication facilities. They can put out a part a full die shrink smaller than their competition, and then use it to beat them over the head in pricing while still keeping margins high on the enthusiast parts.

I've always liked Intel's products, save the P4s, which were merely "ok", so I'm really interested to see what they have in store with their video card parts, which I agree with Willco will be on stores sometime in the next 18 months or so.

I read an article that the architecture of Larrabee is supposed to be pretty radical, and that our concept of GPUs will change as a result.  And that AMD was ahead of the curve with their acquisition of ATi, as both processor manufacturers will be incorporating graphics elements at the CPU level in a way we haven't seen before.

nVidia and ATi need to be taken behind the barn and shot.  A new contender especially one as power consumption-conscious as Intel, can only be a good thing.

yeah, nVidia and ATi have gotten really lazy, especially with regards to form factors and power consumption. i'd almost wish they'd agree to take a year off and work on manufacturing.

They may first go for the integrated market.  Depending on how well their dedicated GPU's do, they may get a contract for a console (only console part I remember them making is the xbox CPU).
