The Ultimate Thread of Mecha Animu
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:16:46 AM »
I have been sick for the past couple of days so I have been at home watching mecha animu on DVD and the stuff I d/l'ed into my new external hard drive.  As I watch stuff, I will review it.  This is what I have on queue so far:

- Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross

- Space Runaway Ideon

- Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

- Mobile Suit Victory Gundam

- After War Gundam X

- Heavy Metal L-Gaim

- Dangaioh

I just finished watching Southern Cross the other day (I bought the DVD set from a Right Stuf sale and I think it set me back like ten bucks, lol), which is probably best known as the "Robotech Masters" section of Robotech in the US.  I've already seen both Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Genesis Climber Mospeada (which were the first and third sections of Robotech, respectively), so this was the last piece of the Robotech "puzzle", so to speak.  As planetary invasion/robot anime goes, it's strictly a "B minus" grade anime...I enjoyed it, especially the latter half (once the aliens' motivations and society start being developed more), but it's nothing particularly amazing.  I do think it's much better than Mospeada, at least.  I was amused by the fact that the animators decided it was necessary to include a shower scene with the main female character at least once an episode. :lol  You won't see that in today's TV animu, that's for sure.

Right now, I'm watching Victory Gundam...I'll write my feelings on that show later, as I've only seen the first six episodes so far.  If anyone has any other animu (MECHA ANIMU, faggurts!) lemme know.

I looked, but I couldn't find any full torrents for Dragonar.  I also looked for Round Vernian Vifam, Xabungle and SPT Layzner, no luck with any of those!

My only exposure to Dragonar was VHS tapes that my cousin made from a Japanese broadcast while he was living on an military base outside Japan back in the 80s. I had no idea what was really going on, but damn if it wasn't awesome.

Bandai Ent. had the license for SPT Layzner, but never did anything with it and let it expire.

Bandai sucks for not releasing the rest of Gundam on DVD in the US.  Where's my Turn A?!  I want a nice official box set, not just fansubs.  :(

Anyway, yeah, there's like a few episodes of Dragonar available via torrents but I'm not gonna d/l it if I can't see the whole thing.  Ditto with SPT Layzner, they have like the first four episodes only.

Is there anything else I should watch?  I need to edumacate myself on mecha some more.

Thought I'd spice up the thread by adding some YouTube links to OPs and such of the stuff I'm watching...

Now, the first show I finished watching was Southern Cross (which in retrospect, is not really a B- quality show...really in the "C" range, mostly because the conclusion is completely incoherent).  Southern Cross originally aired in the US as the middle segment of Robotech...what they did for the Robotech TV show is that they took three completely unrelated animated series from Japan (the only thing they had in common was the basic theme - transforming robots used to defend against alien invasions) and turned them into one continuous storyline.  The first part of Robotech was based off of the amazing Macross...

...which still holds up today as an awesome, fun, melodramatic, cheesy show.  You can probably get it in some form on DVD for a pretty low prices.  I myself own the remastered AnimEigo releases, but ADV has released a bunch of versions of the show as well - just make sure you get the unedited Macross ones, not the butchered Robotech versions of the show.

After Macross in the Robotech timeline came the show I just watched, Southern Cross....

...which is a pretty decent show.  Unlike Macross, the original version didn't take place on Earth, but on an (apparently French!) space colony called Glorie, which is invaded by a race of human-like aliens.  This show actually has a lot of interesting concepts - a female lead, a horrifying secret about the "alien" troops they fight against (SPOILER: they're actually all brainwashed human soldiers so the aliens don't have to lose any of their people in battle), and the mystery behind why the aliens want to conquer Glorie (SPOILER: It was actually originally their home planet, so technically the "invaders" are the humans, not the aliens).  The show regularly undermines these concepts, however, and raises a lot of issues that are never resolved.

After Southern Cross came Mospeada, which I watched last year.

Genesis Climber Mospeada is an aggressively mediocre show that is, again, conceptually interesting.  As the show starts, the Earth has already been conquered by mysterious aliens (not the ones from Macross or Southern Cross, since these shows were originally completely unrelated productions) and all attempts by the human colonies on Mars to reconquer the planet have failed.  The show follows around a group of rebels as they conduct terrorist attacks on alien installations and try to disrupt their activities.  Bonus points for having one of the main characters be a cheeseburger pop singer/military man (with two different voice actors depending on whether he's pretending to be a girl or not).  Junpei might enjoy this show.  I give it a D.

Last year I watched the amazing Turn A Gundam, which has quickly become my all-time favorite Gundam series.

This is an amazing show, which references a lot of Gundam history but can be watched completely independently of any previous Gundam series...in fact, I suspect it was originally planned as a non-Gundam series (and in fact, the Turn A Gundam itself doesn't really resemble any previous Gundam, aside from its traditional blue, red, white, and yellow color scheme).  Highly recommended to anyone who loves animu in the slightest. :bow

Though there were a lot of Gundam series in the '90s prior to Turn A Gundam, the only one Yoshiyuki Tomino (director and creator of the original Gundam series, Zeta, ZZ, F91, and Char's Counterattack) was involved with was Mobile Suit Victory Gundam.  That's the show I'm watching now.

The interesting thing about Tomino Gundam shows vs. Gundam shows by anybody else is that Tomino does not tend to fetishize militarism and weaponry the way a lot of other creators do.  As much as, say, 8th MS Team is thematically anti-war, you can tell the creators love the whole aspect of designing all these mobile suits and uniforms and imbuing them with all this World War II influence.

Don't be fooled by the Victory Gundam OP...the show is incredibly dark at times.  I am really impressed by this, and am scratching my head as to why it's considered the black sheep of the UC shows, perhaps even moreso than Turn A Gundam (by this, I mean that it is rarely referenced in most video games, manga, etc.).

When I watch military mecha anime, I always focus on the political themes that the creators oftentimes subtly insert...and I'm often surprised at how contemptuous some mecha anime creators are towards the military in general (and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces in particular!).  Tomino seems to actually hold disdain towards his audience for expecting happy-happy fun times with giant robots fighting and destroying cities and whatnot.  Perhaps that's why one of his first acts in Victory Gundam is to kill off a young mother and give the responsibility of raising her baby to the protagonist and his friends (all of whom are barely in their teens - war orphans, apparently).

This is really quality stuff, and flashy shit like Gundam Wing and even (dare I say it) Evangelion rarely deals with these themes...it's all just so much philosophical navel-gazing.

I haven't seen ZZ yet.  It's a direct sequel to Zeta - if you watched Zeta, you know that the ending is very catastrophic for the good guys, who basically lose all their pilots and one of their flagships in the final battle against the Titans.  So at the start of ZZ, new crew members join up.  I hear ZZ is not supposed to be very good - it's very jokey in comparison to the grim seriousness of Zeta.  I'm still looking forward to seeing it, however, if for no other reason than it's the missing story link between Zeta and Char's Counterattack.

Victory Gundam is amazing so far.  It takes place in the far future of the UC calendar (the original Gundam series takes place in UC 0079, Victory takes place UC 0156).  The Earth Federation is a completely worthless organization at this point, and a group of colonies known as the Zanscare Empire are waging war on the colonies...since the Feddies are so ineffectual, civilians form an organization known as the League Militaire to fight against Zanscare.  Some of the civilians are engineers and they've built new Gundams to fight against Zanscare's advanced mobile suits.  It's interesting that the protagonist is very, very young, but is forced to kill enemy pilots and you get to see how it affects him psychologically.  Like many of the Tomino-directed shows, it doesn't glorify war or present mobile suits as sexy pieces of tech.

Gundam X is another alternate universe series - it's sort of a "what if" scenario regarding the original Gundam universe.  If you remember the original show, Zeon dropped a space colony on Australia at the start of the war, killing millions of people.  But soon after that, the Zeons and the Feddies signed a treaty outlawing weapons of mass destruction (nukes, colony drops, etc.), and that's why they fought a conventional war with mobile suits and ships instead.  Gundam X imagines what would happen if two opposing forces had not signed that type of treaty and instead, dozens of colonies had been dropped on the Earth, creating an environmental cataclysm and killing off the majority of Earth's population.  Think of it as Mad Max meets Gundam, if you will.  I have seen the first couple of episodes and it looks good so far, but I hear it got cancelled so the ending is very abrupt.

These are all available subbed via torrent, btw.

I'm planning on updating the thread when I've watched more of Victory since I've decided to stick to that particular animu before watching anything else on the list.

UC stuff:
Mobile Suit Gundam (the original - watch the movie trilogy, the TV DVDs are dub-only)
0080: War in the Pocket (six episode OAV, takes place at the same time as the first Gundam series but with different characters)
8th MS Team (one of the most awesome shows, and it can be watched with no knowledge of the rest of the Gundam universe and enjoyed)
0083: Stardust Memory (worth watching mostly for the mecha designs and animation, as the story is a bit of a mess and is basically intended to connect first Gundam to Zeta)
Zeta (one of the best Gundam series ever, don't be annoyed if you dislike the protagonist in the first few episodes, it really picks up after that)
Char's Counterattack (omg omg omg, final battle between Amuro and Char :bow)

Skip Gundam F91.  It was originally planned as a 50 episode TV series and midway through production, they decided to turn it into a two-hour movie instead.  Nice animation and great mecha designs but the story suffers a lot.

Skip ZZ too, I've mostly heard negative things about it.  Victory is good but it's really dark and depressing at times - not a very 'fun' show, though well-made.

Alternate Universe stuff:

G Gundam (silly fun)
Turn A Gundam (the Jesus Christ of Gundams - as in, the resurrection of the franchise...one of my all-time favorite anime shows)

Beezy, I suggest watching 00. If my predictions are correct, we're all in for a treat, because so far, the show has addressed almost every single criticism many fans have had for the series for years.

Only Gundam series I haven't seen are Z (dling now), ZZ, X, Turn A, and SD. Hate G Gundam and Seed Destiny. They're the only ones I don't like. Even Wing and Seed, for all their flaws, are still rather enjoyable.

I love the designs in Victory Gundam, and I love how the design of the Victory is supposed to be useful.  It can break apart into three different core fighters so if the pilot is in danger or his MS is captured it can just split up and recombine later on.  This plays a big part in the first few episodes, especially.

I don't get why it has to launch in three different parts, though - why don't they just launch it in MS form? ???

I'm feeling lazy so I'll let Wiki do my work for me:

Quote
Combattler V
Chōdenji Robo Combattler V is the first part of Tadao Nagahama's Robot Romance Trilogy of Super Robot series. The robot's name is a portmanteau of Combine, Combat and Battle, and the V is intended both as an abbreviation for "victory" and in reference to the five component machines that form the robot, as well as its five pilots. The V is pronounced as the letter V, whereas in the follow-up series, Voltes V, it is pronounced "five".

Story
Thousands of years ago, the people of the planet Campbell decided to leave their planet and seek out new worlds to inhabit. One group, lead by the scientist Oreana, landed on Earth, but was delayed from their mission. In the early 21st century, Oreana's group reawakens and begins their plan to conquer the Earth. The only effective defense against the Campbellians' giant biomechanical slave beasts is the super-electromagnetic robot, Combattler V and its pilots.

Quote
Zambot 3
Super Machine Zambot 3 (無敵超人ザンボット3, Muteki Chōjin Zanbotto 3?, lit. Invincible Super Man Zambot 3) is an anime series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Yoshitake Suzuki, featuring character design by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and produced by Sunrise. It was first broadcast on Japanese TV in 1977. The series lasted for 23 episodes.

Story
There once existed a planet named Beal, until it was wiped out by the mysterious entity known as Gaizok. The few remaining survivors escaped to Earth and split into three families, named Jin, Kamie, and Kamikita respectively. While attempting to start a new life, the collectively known "Jin Family" prepared for the inevitable Gaizok invasion on Earth and its giant mechanical beasts known as "Mecha Boosts". In order to defend their new home, they have built three vehicles which when combined form the mighty Zambot 3. The Jin Family must not only defend against Gaizok attacks, but also harsh criticisms from the very people they protect, who blame the Jin Family for the invasion in the first place.

Quote
Heavy Metal L-Gaim

Heavy Metal L-Gaim (重戦機エルガイム, Juusenki Erugaimu?) is an anime television series, begun in 1984, which was directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Its characters and mecha were designed by Nagano Mamoru, who would later go on to create Five Star Stories. L-Gaim takes place in the Pentagona System, a solar system made up of five planets. Oldna Poseidal, the legendary emperor from the planet Gastogal leads his 24 Temple Knights from planet to planet until all have fallen under his control. His final victory is on the planet Mizum in 3975 when he defeats Kamon Walha V, ruler of the Yaman Clan. Kamon hides his heir, Kamon Myroad on the planet Mizum with the legendary white mecha, L-Gaim. Fifteen years later, now grown up and known as Daba Myroad, he leads a rebellion to free the planets of Pentagona from Poseidal's grasp.

Xabungle

I don't know much about it because it hasn't been fansubbed.  It's a war series with transforming mecha directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino.  It's supposed to be more lighthearted than most of his other work, and is a very popular series here in Japan (I see a lot of merchandise for it considering how old it is).  One of my co-workers at the technical school is actually a big fan of it and has some merchandise for the series on his desk.

Quote
Space Runaway Ideon
Space Runaway Ideon (伝説巨神イデオン, Densetsu Kyojin Ideon, Legendary Giant God Ideon?), is an anime television series produced by Sunrise. It first premiered on the Tokyo 12 Channel (later to be TV Tokyo) from 1980 to 1981, followed by two feature films released in 1982, and was later broadcast in Japan by the satellite TV network Animax from September 2006. Ideon was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and was the series he produced immediately following his most famous work, Mobile Suit Gundam. Its mechanical designers were Submarine (series) & Higuchi Yuuichi (movies) and its characters were designed by Tomonori Kogawa.

The series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize for the second half of 1980.

Space Runaway Ideon begins in 2300, far enough in the future that mankind has begun colonizing other planets. On the planet Solo in the Andromeda Galaxy, a group of archaeologists had come across the mysterious remains of the Ideon—three large armored trucks with the ability to transform into a godlike mecha. They also come across a large spaceship. For six months they had diligently restored the machines but failed to get the giant tanks to move. Suddenly, a humanoid alien civilization known as the Buff Clan comes across Solo.

Karala, the daughter of the Buff Clan's military commander flies down to the planet against orders to investigate (her commanding officer, Gije, is reluctant with her, due to her standing and the fact that he once was a soldier under her father). She is pursued closely by comrades sent by Gije, but they lose sight of her. Assuming the "aliens" (Earthling colonists) have attacked Karala, the Buff Clan begins to attack. Cosmo Yuki, the afro-wearing protagonist of the series, climbs aboard one of the three tanks and, when it initially forms the Ideon, fends off the first assault, repelling Gije's men.

The Ideon is piloted by several Solo Ship crew members, but the main pilot is Cosmo Yuki.

As the crew of the Solo Ship fight and survive further, the true power of the Ideon begins to slowly be revealed with terrifying results. Only Gundam series I haven't seen are Z (dling now),

Boooo you filthy poor! Go buy it!

from what i heard, the translation Z Gundam's American localizaton is awful and that the fansubbed translations are so much better. I'm sure I'll love it so I'll buy it tho.

That's half-right.  The original box set release contains dubtitles instead of a real subtitled translation.  The individual DVD disc releases fixes this, though, so that would be the one to get.

FWIW, I have the box set and I don't think the dubtitles are so bad.

I have a poster of that autographed by the mecha designer, but I've never actually seen the show.  Waiting for it to come out in a box set.

They're not bad. There were a few times where I was watching and could tell that what was said in Japanese was different from the subs, but it didn't ruin the show or anything.

"I DON'T WANT TO PILOT ANYMORE MY MOTHER IS DEAD BECAUSE OF ME WAAAHH"
*bitchslap*
"STFU and get in that Gundam!"

ad infinitum whenever there is even the smallest sign of someone acting emo.  I think even Quattro gets slapped a few times.  It's awesome.

Not yet.  I actually saw it at TGS.  Graphics look crappy but the gameplay was surprisingly solid.  I just hope there are more than one-on-one battles, or it will get real repetitive real fast.
