Gundam Wing is good. It's fun for what it does even though the story is flawed. The ending sucks balls though.

Endless Waltz sucks.

I REALLY hated Releena and all her "there must always be peace, don't fight back even if someone is shooting/killing you" BS. I thought Zechs was an awesome villain and thought the Epyon was awesome!

Relena is an awful character. Lacus in Seed is maybe as bad. No, she's far worse. She's about 10 x worse than she's in Seed in Destiny though.

Have you seen the original Gundams? If has none of that bs. It has people who don't necessarilly want to fight, and while they complain, they'll just get bitchslapped a second later.

Hey Ichirou, what do you think of Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz?

I don't really like Gundam Wing because it was made solely to pander to consumers who wanted model kits (thus the multiple Gundams) and to try to broaden the audience by making the pilots appealing to a female audience (at which it was very successful).  Probably the most direct influence on Seed, and probably the reason I haven't actually seen Seed yet.  I found the story just confusing and the pilots' motivations seemed to change every five episodes, and I found their actions nonsensical a lot of the time.

Endless Waltz at least has better characterization going for it (the characters all had understandable motivations), better animation, and amazing mecha designs by the great Hajime Katoki.  Wing Zero Custom is a masterpiece of design work.  Only Katoki would have the talent to make an angel-inspired Gundam work in an anime. :bow

SEED is a fun re-imagining of First Gundam with some Zeta thrown in for good measure.

Wing, on the other hand, bores me to death.

Distant why did you steal Chris' avatar from MAHQ? How did you guys get into Gundam? They didn't release Gundam over here until 1998.

btw, mahq spoiled Zeta and Char's Counter Attack for me. I was reading what Chris thought of Gundam Wing and the fucker spoiled CCA.

I'll change it if it bugs you, it was the first cool looking avatar that came up in a Google image search.

I had a cousin who was living outside Tokyo as an Army brat in the 80s. I used to get videotaped copies of Gundam and Zeta Gundam back in the day, and some model kits for Christmas. I then replaced those raw Japanese tapes with fansubs when I was in high school.

Not even close. I only took it for four years, which is like taking one or two years of French or Spanish in high school. I can read hiragana and katakana, and I know about 100-125 kanji. I was able to get us around Japan last summer on our honeymoon, but I froze up a couple of times due to not knowing exactly what to say.

I really wish that I stuck with it. Every once in a while I think about taking night classes, there are some great immersion evening courses around here.

Lemme see...I guess it has to do with my love of giant robots, which started when I was in kindergarten.  After school, the first thing I'd do when I got home was watch the afternoon animation block on TV.  Back then we didn't have cable, so I watched stuff in Spanish - unlike in the US, Spanish-language TV had a lot of unedited Japanese cartoons...so instead of Robotech, I was watching Spanish-dubbed Mazinger Z, Ironman-28, Grendizer, Gaiking, and so on.  After we got cable, I kept watching those shows, but supplemented them with stuff like Voltron and Transformers.  Once that stuff went off the air, my interest in robots disappeared for several years until the mid-nineties.

At that time, I had a friend whose brother had a professor in his university who was really into giant robot stuff.  The professor (who was a young dude, maybe 28 or 29 at the time) came over and hung out a lot because my friend's brother had a PSX.  Eventually he got an import PSX along with a bunch of obscure games: Gundam: The One Year War (a strat. RPG), Gundam The Battle Masters, etc.  Along with this, he had a bunch of imported model kits and fansubbed movies (which is how I first saw the Gundam trilogy, actually).  After that, it was fait accompli.  I was hooked once more.

Movie 1 and 2 are AMAZING. I've seen the original series before but I didn't think MSG's movies would be so well edited! This is great! It's weird watching it in Japanese though. I prefer watching Gundam sreies in English.

0079 still stands as my favorite Gundam. It has the best story (from all the Gundam's I've seen), the best cast (though 0080 probably tops it in that), it's simple but it drives it all home at the end of the day. Definitely my favorite mecha animu.

RAMBA RAL!!!

That's not a Rick Dom, that's a Pezun Dowadge (I think).

Yeah, it's a Pezun Dowadge.  It was a model kit design and never appeared in animation:

http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/ms-x/ms-10.htm

Rick Dom:

http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/msgundam/ms-09r.htm

They look a lot alike, probably so the model kits could share a lot of parts between them.

That was Seattle?

The movie never makes it clear, but a lof of the source materials and video games refer to that as Seattle.

Quote
New Yark (ニューヤーク, Nyuu Yaaku?): A massive battle was fought here during the One Year War, resulting in the elimination of a Zeon Gaw fleet and the death of Garma Zabi. Garma actually met his end in near Seattle, if one follows the story based on travel path rather than the script. The White Base falls from space over the southwestern United States and heads north to go around the Zeon bases of California. It is the Gundam world equivalent to New York City of the contemporary real world.

Quote
White Base visits Seattle in episode 10 of Mobile Suit Gundam while trying to flee from Garma Zabi's forces.

Bright's like 21 or 22.  You gotta remember, most of the senior crew was killed at the start of the first movie.  Plus, with the war going the way it is, you gotta imagine the Federation's lost a lot of senior officers.

And yeah, all the names are wacky for the non-Japanese characters.  I imagine Fraw Bow is supposed to be of German descent.

But, there's a story that takes away from the robo-smashin' action. We don't like story and characters anything like a plot. Which is why simplistic fighting tournament stuff does well here.

It also might explain why Gundam SEED bombed in the US, but did very well in Canada.

Go watch Giant Robo, Dragonar, Space Runaway Ideon, Gunbuster, Overman King Gainer, Eureka Seven, Five Star Stories, Aura Battler Dunbine, and Patlabor.

If you like Leiji Matsumoto's space operas (Harlock, Yamato, 999), you need to watch Galaxy Railways. Funimation licensed it for North America, there's a cheap boxset for season one available.

Also Crest/Banner of the Stars is totally sweet if like the whole Legend of Galactic Heroes stuff.
