Election 2008 update (politics lololol)
« on: September 29, 2007, 04:00:05 PM »
I made this for gaf but I put too much effort looking up numbers for it to go to waste.

PRIMARIES - DEMOCRATS

National (Gallup 9/16):
Quote
Clinton 47%
Obama 25%
Edwards 11%

Iowa (Strategic Vision 9/23):
Quote
Clinton 24%
Edwards 22%
Obama 21%

New Hampshire (CNN 9/24):
Quote
Clinton 41%
Obama 19%
Edwards 11%

PRIMARIES - REPUBLICANS

National (Gallup 9/16):
Quote
Giuliani 27%
Thompson 18%
Romney 10%

Iowa (Strategic Vision 9/23):
Quote
Romney 30%
Giuliani 17%
Thompson 13%

New Hampshire (CNN 9/24):
Quote
Romney 23%
Giuliani 22%
Thompson 12%

GENERAL - CLINTON VS. GIULIANI
(Fox News - 9/26)
Quote
Clinton 46%
Giuliani 39%

GENERAL - CLINTON VS. ROMNEY
(Rasmussen - 9/23)
Quote
Clinton 49%
Romney 40%

So what are your thoughts on how the race looks so far? Hillary is obviously the shoe-in for the dem nomination and for the republicans it looks like it will be Rudy or Romney (thompson has gotten no traction) and they both would lose to her as it stands right now.

i would not vote for hilary or giuliani. this isn't even a "lesser of two evils" choice, this is choosing how deep the razor-edged rusty dildo gets rammed up your rectum. fuck, i'd even vote for that shallow muppet ron paul over one of these two! why is the electorate so fucking stupid? it almost makes a man want to don a tin-foil hat and join hans in a bunker.

Romney > Giuliani. The only good thing about Clinton is we get Bill with her, which is a positive. But choosing between Mr Mormon and my paranoia regarding his religion, or Clinton...tough choice.

But yeah, GayBoy is right, doesnt matter who I vote for at this point considering how strongly my state leans either way and can be overridden by other states. Guess ill just have to hope for the best.

romney's a slightly less stupid giuliani, yet he's still cut from the same platform and political cloth as giuliani and bush, plus i can't say i want a mormon in the nation's highest office. hillary is a slithering powermonger and officious to a fault, and lord only knows how many creepy folks she owes -- and will pay back during her potential administration -- among the crooked dc elite. elect her, and we elect legion. giuliani *is* the worst, though, because he combines the petty political dependency of hillary with the stupidity of junior. :'(

Not sure we can vote for anyone safely. Giuliani has no head for foreign policy beyond the soundbites after 9/11, and this presidency will require the mending of a lot o fences.

I would have preferred Obama but I doubt we'll see that at this point :(

Unfortunately Obama just lacked the visible passion to capture more votes from Hillary. IIRC he tended to fold a bit at debates most of the time.

I've warmed up to the inevitability that I'll be voting for Hillary in the general election. I'm a Biden guy though, so I'll be voting for him in the Michigan (lol) primary

The weird thing about the Hillary campaign is how many people think she's further left than she is.  Polls pretty consistently show that voters believe she's more liberal than Obama or Edwards, and anecdotally, a lot of political junkies seem to suspect she's waiting to unleash her Secret Leftism.

Not that it matters, but I'd vote for Hillary in the general election without thinking.  I wouldn't risk that much on the health of John Paul Stevens.

I have CONSPIRACY theories when it comes to Romney, but none of them are valid. Guiliani has used 9/11 to build a political platform, and in my opinion thats suggests he has a scary evil capacity

Hillary isn't that liberal on the war. I don't think she's gonna get in office and start pulling troops out, like some of the other candidates want. I like her position on Iraq more than Obama's and Edward's. I like Biden's three state plan on paper, but I don't know if it will work in real life :-\

Hey, you remember how Rudy was at an NRA event, and he interrupted his speech to take a call from his wife?  Guess why he did it!

Quote from: NY Daily News
Elaborating for the first time on why he interrupted a speech to the National Rifle Association this month to take a cell-phone call from his wife, Judith, Giuliani explained that, since 9/11, he and the missus always chat before flying.

"Quite honestly, since Sept. 11, most of the time when we get on a plane, we talk to each other and just reaffirm the fact that we love each other," the Republican presidential hopeful told the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Sigh.  Oh homosexual lad, here we go again.

Your data is dated, as far is pertains to Iowa anyhow.

Among likely Caucus goers:

Obama (wtf lol) 28%
Hilldog 24%
Edwards 22%

Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter- Hillary is getting the nomination and likely the Presidency, which is something that makes me feel decidedly icky as it really feels like Americans are so dumb that they've decided to voluntarily subject themselves to an aristocracy of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton.

The only chance for an upset is if Edwards can pull off Iowa (he is hinging his entire strategy on this) and then catch fire and win a bunch of early states and appear like an actual front runner.  I would vote for Edwards without a second thought in the general election, but there's no way I'm going to vote for a voluntary aristocracy.  This is the dumbest Presidential election I can remember- the media enjoys being fellated by Hillary's camp and will dance to her tune, letting her cruise to the nomination and victory.  Meanwhile, I'm busily learning French so I can move to Vancouver.

The media seems content to just let Hillary sail to victory. Outside of Russert at the debate, I haven't seen anyone ask her tough questions and then follow them up after she either bullshitted out of answering or laughed like a condescending prick. She's definitely doing a great job dodging questions and mis-steps at the same time from a political perspective, but I want to see her challenged.

Obama seems perfectly fine with sitting back while she invalidates him. Edwards seems like the only person (outside of his wife) willing to take it to her directly

The sad fact about the media is that they are essentially a bunch of petulant middle schoolers.  All you have to do to make them your lapdog is show them a lot of attention, and Hilldog's machine is very good at this.  It's a large reason why Gore and Kerry lost their elections, and why Dean ended up losing in the primaries.

Yeah. Clinton holds a certain mystique among the media, and her machine knows how to capitalize on it. Seeing Chris Matthews on the climax of orgasm as he chit chats about "Bill and Hillary" is just nauseating. It's sort of like videogame "journalists" who love being invited to developer parties and getting "inside info" so much that their ability to be impartial is compromised.

Hillary is playing chess with everybody

Here's a paper that was making the rounds a little while back (involves math that I forgot if I ever knew, but you can get the gist of it without), about how American voters act.  Big surprise: they seek out information that conforms to their decisions, and tune out information that doesn't!

Anyway, I think the Bush/Clinton era wouldn't reflect a new aristocracy (which had more to do with the Adamses, Roosevelts, and Kennedys), but the celebrity culture.  We think of people like McCain and Edwards as being well-known, but Hillary is way more prominent in the public consciousness.

There are very few people in politics whose fame transcends it, and she's one of them.  It's why Arnold had such an easy time of it.

Yes and this may be her key advantage why her popularity in the electorate is slowly increasing.

The media was hard as hell on Gore (not anymore though lol) and Kerry while most of the media, outside of Russert masturbates to her every word.

Even Fox News loves her to death. They constantly bash Obama and friends but are nothing but kind to her.

About the aristrocacy....well it ends with Hillary. There is no more electable Bush's (W. tarnished Jeb's chances ages ago) and I highly doubt Chelsea Clinton will be getting into politics.

Giuliani sounds like he's been really lousy as a father/family man.

Quote
In May 2000, the New York Daily News broke news of Giuliani's extramarital relationship with Judith Nathan, a sales manager for a pharmaceutical company. Giuliani then called a press conference to announce that he intended to separate from Hanover.[112][113][114] Hanover, however, had not been told about his plans before his press conference,[115] an omission for which Giuliani was widely criticized.[116] Previously, Giuliani had hinted at the relationship by referring to Nathan as his "very good friend." Giuliani now went on to praise Nathan as a "very, very fine woman", and said about his marriage with Hanover, that "over the course of some period of time in many ways, we've grown to live independent and separate lives." Hours later Hanover said, "I had hoped that we could keep this marriage together. For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudy's public life because of his relationship with one staff member," a reference to Lategano. Giuliani, Hanover and Nathan appeared on the cover of People magazine in the aftermath.[117]

Giuliani then moved out of Gracie Mansion and into an apartment belonging to two gay friends.[118] Giuliani filed for divorce from Hanover in October 2000,[119] and an unpleasant public battle broke out between their representatives.[120] Nathan was barred by court order from entering Gracie Mansion (where Hanover still lived) or meeting his children before the divorce was final.[121] In May 2001, in an effort to mitigate the bad publicity from the proceedings, Giuliani's attorney revealed (with the mayor's approval) that Giuliani was impotent due to his prostate cancer treatments and had not had sex with Nathan for the preceding year. "You don't get through treatment for cancer and radiation all by yourself," Giuliani said. "You need people to help you and care for you and support you. And I'm very fortunate I had a lot of people who did that, but nobody did more to help me than Judith Nathan."[122] Giuliani argued in a court case that he aimed to introduce Nathan to his children on Father's Day, 2001, and that Donna had prevented this visit.[123] Giuliani and Hanover finally settled their acrimonious divorce case in July 2002, after his mayoralty had ended, with Giuliani paying Hanover a $6.8 million settlement and granting her custody of their children.[124]

Giuliani subsequently married Judith Nathan on May 24, 2003, and thus gained a stepdaughter, Whitney. It was also Nathan's third marriage after two prior divorces.[117]

By March 2007, The New York Times and the New York Daily News reported that Rudy Giuliani had become estranged from both his son Andrew (now a golf team member at Duke University) and his daughter Caroline (graduated from Trinity School in 2007, attending Harvard University), missing major events in their lives, such as graduations, and sometimes going long stretches without talking to them, and that neither of them was taking part in his presidential campaign.[125][126] Caroline uses her mother's surname, Hanover, rather than Giuliani's, and according to reports, she did not inform Giuliani when she was accepted to Harvard.[117] Caroline apparently linked her personal Facebook page to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama.[127][128] However, after a slate.com contributor reported this link, Caroline removed this link from her "Facebook" page.[129]
Pure loving, Christian fatherhood material there.

To be sure.  I mean, the media is pretty much gonna go hogwild on whoever the Republican nominee is.  Hilldog's machine is probably actively salivating at the opportunity to bury Rudy.  If the Republicans were smart, they'd nominate someone relatively unknown and vanilla like Romney.

It has been said that those within "Clinton Camp" are giddy at the idea of going against Rudy. They much prefer him over Thompson or Romney.

A rudy nomination basically means Bill's love of women if you will is basically nullified completely as a campaign issue. Republicans NEED a Romney if they want to win. Rudy's image in America is sealed up and well known, they can't turn him into a family man while Romney is a clean slate.

One of my favorite Hillary quote goes well with this:
Quote
“When you’re attacked, you have to deck your opponents."

Chris Matthews while a bit kooky was 100% right in what he said the other day. If Romney is the nominee the republican machine can create a perfect image for him. If it's Rudy...Hillary will crush him in a Reagan style landslide.

Rudy's past and image is just waiting for the Clinton folk to dredge up, and his well lack of religion and morals means the religious right won't show up to vote in the general.

Republicans only shot is with Romney, and even then that is a iffy shot.

Not true. Carl Bernstein's (guy who took down nixon) book has A LOT of negative info and stories about hillary in his bio on her. But one thing that was clear was that they are honestly in love to this day despite Bill's cheating ways.

Though my favorite story from it was when she found out about Monica from bill she chuck a lamp at his head.  :lol

You guys are funny. The rupublicans have only one chance. He is the only candidate on either side that doesnt spew BS.

80% of the american people want to leave Iraq. Ron Paul would get use out tomorrow if he could. How can the GOP be so dumb and not be supporting this guy more.

Yea but Ron Paul would beat any of the dems. All of the right would be forced to vote for him, as would the libertaians and many of the anti war crowd since he dint vote for the war originally. (Ahem Hillary). He would be president if he was nominated. And a fine president he would be.

Because ultimately the GOP and Ron Paul have different views on nearly everything and they know the amount of control they could exert over him would be very little.

Ron Paul wouldn't win a general election. Dismantling the department of education and the ilk makes him unelectable. Iraq isn't the only issue kiddo, it may be to college kids but the economy and medical care and the like are nearly if not equally significant. You have your head up your ass if you think Iraq is the only thing people are going to be voting on. And that is all Ron Paul has. His other views are polar opposite of the public at large.

NOW BACK WHERE WERE WE?

Bill and Hillary still are a "couple" and I see no reason to believe otherwise.

why is fred thompson lagging? he seems to be the perfect republican candidate given his law & order character and erstwhile would-be reagan platform.

All the main GOP candidates are basically running on the same Reagan-lite platform.  It's just that the base is suspicious of whether they really believe it.

Thompson doesn't have any super-special name recognition among the public, and he was never a rightwing folk-hero like Reagan.  At the end of the day, he's a pretty unexciting, wrinkly senator who tells the primary voters what they want to hear, but have already heard a lot.  He's the Republican Chris Dodd.

Also, he's apparently running an amateur-hour campaign that's barely raising any money.

For all their marriage problems, to their credit, the Clintons have stuck with it.

The only reason they're still "together" is because of Hillary's presidential aspirations. Divorcing Bill would have ended her career most likely.

They're a partnership a few steps from becoming a corporation

You're too gullible, PD.  That's the media and the Republican spin on it, but I personally don't believe it's true.

Eh? That is my take on it and always has been, and I didn't know anyone else was with me(they're always lagging behind!).  She was supposed to be this hero for women, and the one time she has to prove it, she sells them out so she can retain political ties and power.

She would of endeared herself to most women that's for sure, couldv'e gotten re-married within 8 years or so and still have a good chance imo.

Bill and Hillary still are a "couple" and I see no reason to believe otherwise.

I see no reason to care otherwise.

It's a really frustrating dynamic at work.  The media will spend a bunch of time on Hillary's marriage, hair, and cleavage, and will generally ignore stuff that I'd like to see discussed (mainly her special interest ties and advisers).

It's not so much that the coverage will be too positive or too negative, but that it will be too frivolous.

et: Yes, you were the ONLY PERSON to speculate that Hillary's really a big phony who stayed married to Bill so she could get power.  Yeesh.

I don't understand people that say they vehemently oppose Guliani's "politics". The guy was a fucking MAYOR .. he doesn't have any politics nor record to even oppose. Dumb shits. Anything he says now is clearly positioning in his bid for the nomination. Look at GWB .. 95% of what he "ran on" in the election was thrown out the window once he made office. So, if you want to oppose Rudy because he is an unknown quantity with no real experience in the national body poltic ... fine. But to fall for the demonizing spin that he is some sort of autocratic monster, just makes you seem like a fool/tool for the left.

Anways ... I'm pining for my old, cuddly dumpling Newt to run. What a shame he needs a second house to hide all of his skeletons and even Hillary laughs at his negatives ... but what can ya do .. I'm still stuck in 1993.

Newt has his self-empowerment speech down to a T. It fucking makes Republicans get all hot and bothered and start humming the star spangled banner and dreaming of that shining city on a hill. The same kind of shit that Obama uses to sway some of them.

If a mayor has no politics to oppose, the corollary is that he has no politics to support, no?
