Obvious: Should I work at Fox News?
« on: November 06, 2007, 11:25:06 PM »
Thought some of you guys might get a kick out of this: so I've been bored as hell at work for the last couple of months, have been kinda lazily interviewing around at a bunch of places seeing what the market is like, and one of the places I've interviewed at was fair and balanced Fox News, for a senior-level position on their site.  I've worked at a lot of news/media companies, I worked with the NYT,  I worked on Friedman's book, I worked at Conde Nast... I have a lot of experience in that world, so I'm a good fit, and I'm 99.9% sure they're going to make me some sort of an offer tomorrow.

There's another offer I'm more likely to take (better people, better projects, better location, won't have "Republican Lackey" emblazoned on my resume), but they didn't match the salary I was asking for, so I'm basically waiting to see if FNC will match it, or if I'm just asking too much, before I decide.

But I open the question to EB: should I work for what is likely the most fair and balanced cable news network that America trusts in America?  Or should I basically be a communist who hates freedom and terrorizes freedom and kills babies of freedom?

If I had the opportunity, I would jump on it.  What could possibly be more entertaining than working for them?  You KNOW they aren't going out of business any time soon, so as long as you can keep pace with their ridiculousness, you are set.

I could probably insert subversive messages in the HTML comments there, or create fake news stories that "accidentally" get published under a rival's user ID...

A couple of years back I interviewed at the National Review and it was almost the same story--I'm just afraid if I go there I'll never get hired in NY again!

Well, you know I'm going to say the commie thing.

But srsly, if your goal is have a further career in that field and you think taking a job with them is going to hinder that, then I would go with the job that it sounds like you want.  What was the discrepancy between what you asked for and what they offered?

Like I said, looks good on a resume. While the big networks all hate each other, they DO respect each other as enemies.

It's sad that working for the most racist, biased network around still looks amazing on a resume.

In terms of their campaign coverage, they're apparently no more biased than the NYT or non-cable network news (actually, while they favor Republicans, they're surprisingly balanced! MSNBC is apparently the most pollyannaish, loving everyone).  In terms of racism, they appear to have a pretty diverse collection of people working on their dot-com side at least.

I don't necessarily want to continue working in news / media / publishing, since while they may be big names they don't really pay well.  I'm trying to move into interactive agencies / more consulting work, which is what the other gig will be (one of the best firms in the country / world).  The difference between my asking price and what they offered is small enough that I might just accept their offer and not try to barter.  I just thought I'd see what FNC replied with.

This is pretty neat for you man, would you have to relocate to NYC?

UPDATE: I got the job!  But they weren't able to meet my salary demands, which means I may have been pricing myself too high (oh well).  So now I'm in a ~bidding war between my current employer and the interactive agency I'm probably going to leave them for.  Has anyone here ever been in that situation and stayed at the place they were at?  I can't imagine that being a good outcome...

Yea. Their news anchors are WAY hotter.

Even when I don't agree with APF he still finds a way to impress me with his arguments - and put the more liberal members of GAF to shame. For me if it's not Mandark or APF, I'm not impressed
