What's with the 360 backlash?
« on: November 11, 2007, 09:53:17 PM »
Seriously. In the last year every PS3 exclusive has fallen flat on it's face with Lair being an enormous embarassment. In the meantime, 360 has nabbed a handful of great mid-range software and a couple of killer exclusives. XBLA finally has some legs and it seems, at least, that RROD is clearing up a bit. New SKUs are less tard-ish, cheaper and more accessible. The holiday slate is delicious. So why all the hate?

Nintendo isn't even in the videogame business anymore, it's in the Wii business. Just like Apple doesn't sell an MP3 player, it sells the iPod. My parents have one, my sister and her husband have one, my obscure relatives without kids have one. These are 3 families who haven't purchased a console in a decade. Wii wins, shovelware or not. It's not even a contest.

The PS3 seems to be stumbling, although it's accrued a modest amount of playable titles. It's exclusives have all blown up. PSN/Home is still on the launch pad and the holiday looks to be a loser.

So why are we still down on the 360? I have almost nothing awful to say about it, but maybe I'm blinded here. Fill me in, what's with the backlash?

I know what you mean. Half Life 2 is the first game I've been really addicted to in years.

Brand preferences are still very strong.  Look at Japan and all Europe sans the UK.  Price is also a barrier.  PS2 didn't start selling like crazy until it reached under $200.  I also believe some people are still on the fence due to the RROD and disk drive issues that have plagued the 360 since launch.

If you just plunked the thing down in front of me with no preamble, I'd never assume it's a Microsoft product. Unlike Vista, it works beautifuly. Everything is well integrated. Also, it's not that loud. It's louder than anything else in my living room, but it's really not that loud. I don't mind the DRM because it's not like I can transit media off of it, anyway. PC games- So what? You get some ports. It's good news, ala Orange Box.

Exclusives are about over in the EA-age of gaming. And the shooters for 360 have all been stellar. Rainbow Six, Halo 3, Orange Box CoD 2/3/4. The power supply is fucking enormous, but it's not like you can't tuck it away and it's hardly a reason for backlash.

i love my 360 but i woudln't say everything is well integrated. you have settings thrown all across the system and it's really confusing sometimes

Xbox 360 GUI/Dashboard.

360 is one awesome console, and the only thing i hate about it is the cheap hardware build when compared to the PS3.

I'm down on the 360 because it's loud and rickety. I love the games but everytime I play the system, everytime it loads, I feel like I'm smoking a pack of cigarettes and hastening the inevitable cancer. I get DREs and crashes all the time (probably 4-5 per 20 hour game playthrough), though no RROD yet.

Get another one, my old 360 with the Samsung drive was loud and full of DREs.

my new Benq drive is a whole lot better, less noise and no DREs.

i heard the new LG-Hitachi drive in HDMI 360s is kinda louder than the Benq but no DRE/scratched discs.

yeah, I think my 2 year extended warranty is up in like June 08. I'm gonna force a RROD at that point if I haven't gotten one yet.

My first one RROD'ed after I ran well over a thousand hours of movies/tv on dvd and games. Kinda saw it coming. New one's been fine, even with my indecisive game swapping during boot up procedures lol
