Interesting that after all the Bioshock hype n' wack off sessions, most people aren't putting it on their GOTY lists.  It was awesome, guys...what happened??

Bioshock's still my leading candidate for GOTY.  I guess it's more important for some people to be an elitist or contrarian than to be real.  I just tell it like it is.  Bioshock is GOTY so far.

Maybe Lost Planet on PC was a bad port?

You have to forgive me for being a bit dismissive of Sengoku Basara 2.  Devil Kings blew ass, and I will never play the sequel, so I can never understand how much of an improvement it is.
.
yeah, devil kings was so fundamentally awful that i can't imagine part deux being even up to middling musou standards --

TVC, Prole, I know what you mean.  I *HATED* Sengoku Basara. HATED HATED HATED HATED IT!  But Basara 2 is just that awesome.  I don't know what the hell happened or what Capcom did, but it's that good.

Devil Kings shouldn't even count as a real game.  Capcom took Basara, hacked it up, taking out storyline and characters, and released it as the mess you know and despise.

Capcom is being distinguished mentally-challenged by not releasing the game in English.  They should just put it out under a different name instead of "Devil Kings 2," and not try to change the story and characters around like distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

Quote
and sorry, lyte, but you and duckroll and the rest of the few basara 2 j-gaf set et al really have some dubious freakin' tastes, even by my wholly unorthodox standards.

Don't lump me in with those guys, my tastes are entirely different.  :punch :punch  And FUCK IT'S THE GAF TALK AGAIN!!!   :maf :'(

Lost Planet on PC had issues with networking, but they fixed it IIRC.

plus you get to play as Frank West, Frank west as MM and Joe (LP character) and you have RE4 camera mode, all in one patch, 400mb i think.

LP is more suited to console in my own opinion, it's kinda gives you that contra arcade feel but in 3D and no COOP, sadly.

Nah, the graphics were even more beautiful in DX10 and 1080P w/AA is achievable on one 8800 GTX.

Amnintendho, I already have a wired 360 controller that I use on the PC.  It's probably the best PC joypad ever.  I even used it to play Bioshock the 1st time through.

That sounds exactly like that Tekno-whatever dude at GAF.  I loved PC gaming but it was insane of him to suggest that Trackmania was on the same level as the top console racers.

Smooth, try the demo if you haven't already.

LP is all about fighting huge bugs and mechs, the only part i hated (besides the story) was the human AI, really dumb.

all other enemies though had good AI.

McDragon, Lost Planet PS3 is getting all the stuff that was added to the PC version.

so what makes it better than musou, to you? i hated the goofy characters in devil kings, so i'm pre-emptively asking you NOT to mention characters as a plus.

Like the characters in Musou are any less goofy?  :lol  (Disclaimer- I didn't even want to touch Devil Kings, so I don't know if they made the characters even worse)

It's the over-the-top look and feel of the game that I love so much, plus the smoother controls and more straight forward game play design.  Basara 2 is more akin to a classic beat-em-up than a crowd-control battlefield fighter like Musou.  You still take on hordes of enemies, but on a smaller scale.  The enemy variety is greater and the levels are more interesting.  You take on wacky sentai superhero-like Samurai, huge mechs, avoid giant cannonballs and even more massive snowballs, and collect shit-tons of gold to use to build up your stats and buy new items- and there's still stuff to earn by beating the stages.  And I WILL mention the characters because their variety is better than any of the Musou games...different weapons and attack styles for all; the first game had a ton of clones, but they got rid of that in Basara 2.  There's even one character who GRAPPLES and doesn't even use weapons, Zangief style.

It's just a hell of a lot more fun and enjoyable to play than any Musou title I've ever tried, and that includes the new Dynasty Warriors 6, and this forum's highly-worshipped Gundam Musou.  The game oozes character and personality, too.  Musou games are downright dull in comparison.

that doesn't sound like much of a mechanical improvement at all, and since i care fuck-all about the characters and any wackiness thereof, i don't think i'd like basara 2 much at all -- i NEED the added tactical and base capturing layer.

I hated chromehounds. I just remember joining the side that was getting dogpiled and walking around in a crappy desert with TVC.
well it's more of a mech sim.

now imagine that and having to coordinate with your squad depending on what size you are and what roles you need (most matches have 5 minutes before everybody readies up because they have to modify their mechs).  yeah, it's not an easy game to get into.  once you do get into a good squad and know every facet of the gameplay and get matched against a good squad though, it's sex.

but yeah, sal kar gets like no love.  it's hard to get their good weapons but most of the useful weapons are I think in tarakia (usually the winner).

yeah, everybody in my squad had at least a couple pre-made rigs.  plus for something like a commander, a lot of them are easy to quickly modify if you shave off the heavy weapons and just leave on a couple machine guns.  the problem is that if you did have to start a new mech, a lot times (especially with ones that have artillery weapons) you have to do a field test to see how the aiming and recoil feels.

my one squadmate had this awesome emblem he made that said fukurmom.  I need to ask him for it.

It's Musou on steroids.  It also offers multiple SELECTABLE Musou-super style attacks, which can be used to create ridiculously huge combos.

Check out these videos:

Koeiwarriors Sez:

Quote

Sengoku BASARA is a game made by Capcom, and produced by Mr. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the same producer of Capcom's famous Devil May Cry series. Its gameplay is similar to KOEI's Shin Sangoku Musou (Dynasty Warriors) and Sengoku Musou (Samurai Warriors): a Hack'n'Slash game. It also shares the same timeline as Sengoku Musou, the Sengoku Jidai occured in Japan during 16th century. However, what distinguishes Sengoku BASARA from KOEI's games is the stylish aspect. The moves in this game are made as stylish as the ones you can see in DMC; and Mr. Makoto Tsuchibayashi who drew Dante is the one who makes all the characters' eccentric designs.

The first game was released on July 21st 2005, and received quite a favorable response from the Japanese gamers. However for some reason, Capcom decided to scrap the historical aspect of the game when they were trying to bring it overseas. They tweaked Sengoku BASARA into Devil Kings for the Western market.

One year after SB1 was released in Japan, Capcom launched the sequel, Sengoku BASARA 2, which was released on July 27th 2006. This new game has much more volume and replayabilty than its prequel.

Modes
Sengoku BASARA 2 has three times the replayability of its prequel. Two new modes and 48 stages are available on this game.

Aside from the Unification Mode and Free Battle Mode, there are now Story Mode and Arena Mode. Story Mode is the equivalent of DW&SW's Musou Mode, where you follow your character's story by going through 5 to 6 stages. Arena Mode (named Daibutoukai) is a 100-stage survival mode that Shin Onimusha players may find it similar to the Dark Realm.

Characters and Enemies
There is a total of 30 unique characters in this game. All 21 unique characters -PCs and NPCs- from the prequel are making a return. But first of all, the two popular NPCs from SB1, Chousokabe Motochika and Mouri Motonari, are now playable. There were also issues of clone characters which were Kenshin-Matsu and Sasuke-Kasuga.. Not anymore. Matsu now holds a naginata and can summon animals, while Kasuga now carries kunais. Kenshin and Sasuke still have their old weapons.

There are 4 brand-new playables. The first one is Maeda Keiji, the kabukimono all of you should have known by now. Then there's Toyotomi Hideyoshi, accompanied by his strategist, Takenaka Hanbei. Last but not least, Miyamoto Musashi is also in this game, although he just serves as an extra character to please you Musashi-philes. (He does not have a story nor element, and he only has two skills at all)

There are 5 new NPCs. Other than Katakura Kojuurou, Masamune's retainer, there are Azai Nagamasa, O-Ichi, Fuuma Kotarou and Honganji Kennyo.

There are also new kinds of enemies, such as fire ninjas, ice ninjas, oni soldiers, dragon tanks, and perhaps the most famous of them all is the Gohonyari, a squad of five spearmen that may remind you of Power Rangers.

Gameplay
The gameplay is still similar to the prequel, however there are now some new features, including Battle Drive, a hyper-mode-activation system similar to DW5's Musou Awakening and Basara Fever, a combo hit ranker taken from Devil Kings and will give you coins for each hits after every 500 hits.

Coins? Yes, there is now money in this game, and you can use them to shop in the Basara Shop which sells things like stat-increasing foods, weapons and armors, as well as special items. Speaking of items, they're still generated randomly from treasure boxes. However in this sequel, the boxes are now divided into two categories: Item Box and Equipment Box. Also, useless boxes will be automatically converted into money or experience points.

And speaking about EXP, the maximum level your character can get now is 100.

Others
The music is, once again, varied. You can hear many genres of music from this game's BGMs; from rock, techno, to even jazz. Some of the music from SB1 are returning. But sadly, some other favorite themes such as Thunderbolt aren't.

This game only has one minus point for me, which is the lack of art from its prequel. Unlike in SB1, now you can only see the 3D rendition of the characters in all places; the only place you can see the artful 2D drawings is in the Character Introduction movie accessible from the Gallery.

And last but not least, although this game only has a few historical accuracies compared to Sengoku Musou, some of the stories and dialogues are humorous, such as when one of Zabii's followers says "No Zabii, No Life!" So in the end, if you want to play a stylish and fun hack'n'slash game, go get this game
.

Musou games don't have enemies like this:

Or weapons like this:

Or attacks like this:

BASARA 2!

:bow :bow :bow

Oh, and every character has three sets of armor and eight weapons to get.  And you want skill?  Play the ARENA MODE!  It's not you fighting dumb guards...you cut right to the chase and engage in combo-filled fighting game-like battles against other main characters!

The Orange Box (PC) and Bioshock (PC) stand out as two games that really impressed me to the point where I would grade them a clear notch above everything else I played so far this year. I'd give my tip of the hat to Valve for making three new games-Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Episode 2-where I really couldn't even go back and say "man I wish this could have been done this way or that way". It was pretty much perfect as is.

I'm sure my tastes are crap for this board but for me the most enjoyment I've gotten out of the games that I've played this year...

Skate
Puzzle Quest
Fifa 08 (this probably has more to do with this is the first futbol game I've played in 4 or 5 years)

However, I think the best game I've played this year was sadly...

The Warriors

Not sure what took me so long to play that, but talk about a game that just gets just about everything right!

My favorite games I've played this year

COD4 (although I haven't touched SP)
Puzzle Quest (although it's too long...but like TVC said, you can pick at it)
Bioshock (although not the second coming of Christ or anything)
Orange Box (although I've only played Portal and TF2...HL2 is technically a part of it, too, right?)

Out of those, I have to say the Orange Box is the best, but I don't think I can count all those games together. It's a collection of awesome games. I'd then have to pick COD4.

I have yet to play Portal, HL2:Episode 2 (getting Orange Box for Christmas), Bioshock, or Contra IV.

I think we all have our own personal, sometimes shitty tastes here. On Evilbore, it's OK to play a 6/10 game and enjoy the hell out of it if it tickles your fancy. Heck, here are some of my GREATEST HITS that I played and enjoyed this year:

Lawnmower Racing Mania 2007 (surprisingly fun)
War Front: Turning Point (eastern bloc WW2 weirdness RTS)
Sonalysts' Dangerous Waters (enjoy the awesomeness of modern naval warfare by staring at sonar waterfall displays. Oh, and late 90s visuals)
Earth 2160 - silly complex eastern european RTS with generic scifi setting

I am going to tackle a heavily modded install of UFO Extraterrestrials over Christmas, a game that got like a 5.2 from gamespot. It's gonna be 110% awesome too.

I'm sticking to my guns with Bioshock.  A bit overhyped and slightly overrated, but still the best thing I've played all year by a large margin.  Portal, COD4, Virtua Fighter 5 Online, and Puzzle Quest round out the top 5 of the moment.  Honorable mention to Team Fortress 2.

I probably won't get an opportunity to play UR MR GAY or Mass Erect this year. :(

Honestly?  For me, it was Crackdown.  That game was just pure fun for me.  I explored every nook and cranny of the city, and kept playing long after I'd beaten the main adventure (which wasn't that great).  I'd pop it in every day just to jump around the city and cause destruction for a few minutes.  I was constantly finding new tricks to do with the powers.  I've since sold it, but I sort of regret selling it now, and when it gets in the $10 range I'll pick it up again and keep it for good this time.

Bioshock was a fantastic experience overall, but the combat got a bit repetitious, and the last fifteen or so minutes of the game were a huge letdown.

Halo 3, I just wasn't feeling it.  Same as it ever was.  I still haven't dipped into the online stuff.

Orange Box is up there, but I'd played HL2 before.  As far as value goes, it definitely wins on that.

COD4?  Beat it, sold it.  Gameplay-wise it's the same COD as ever, only five hours shorter and reskinned with a modern setting.  I played 2 games online, and both times ran into typical XBL shitheads.  That was enough for me.  I'm just over competitive MP on consoles, I think.  I've always had better experiences on PC - the communities are much nicer, by and large.

That's how I was feeling when deciding to pick up COD4 or Fifa 08. I just couldn't imagine it being that much different from previous versions, and I figured the multi would just be mired with the typical a-holes. FPS online are an absolute blast when you have the right people in on the session. Just seems like those sessions are getting quite further between nowadays. I'm sure it's mostly because I'm becoming a crotchety old man. :tophat

Virtua Fighter 5 and Sega Rally Revo are my GOTY's. I may add NFS ProStreet to that list if it's awesome.  :-*

-Bioshock
-Crackdown (Loved it, but never finished off the last gang)
-VF5
-Ouendan 2

My candidates so far...

I haven't played SMG, Halo 3, Orange Box, Uncharted, or Ratchet.  I'll probably won't play those games this year as I have to complete my backlog first.

EDF3 or whatever, it's basically what musuo games would be if they didn't suck shit. Orange Box and VF5 are also up there.

Right now, it would be:

Persona 3
Another Century's Episode 3: The Final
Gundam Musou
Ratchet and Clank Future: TOD
Call of Duty 4

Still waiting for Uncharted and Rock Band, though.

Blue Dragon would definitely be on there if I had a 360. The two hours I've spent on it thanks to my 360-owning cousin were awesome.

WTMF man, Portal all the goddamn way to 2008.  Why isn't it on the OP list?!

Right now my list is:

Blue Dragon
Mario Galaxy
Super Stardust HD

I hate choosing one over the other since they're all great games in their own distinctive ways.

Edit:Just scratched BioShock off the list now that I've played more of it. Great atmosphere, questionable design choices.

Wait, what?  It's nothing like a Musou game.  And it's a budget game that was released at a higher price (yes, even the $30 U.S. price is too high compared to the $20 previous versions).  Plus EDF2 on PS2 is the better game...it may look worse, but it has another playable character and more weapons.

did EDF 2 have 60 fps (I keed), and were the weapon/difficulty levels pretty balanced?  how was the co-op?

EDF2 is like 15 fps.  Maybe.   :)  EDF3 came off as EDF2 with slightly better visuals and a much better frame rate, but no Gullwing (the female character with different weapons and a JET PACK- FUCK YEAH!!).

I'm not a big fan of these games in the first place though.  I got EDF2 only because at the time, everyone was raving about it on GAF, so I took the plunge.

The best Simple 2000 games are the EDF and Oneechanbara titles, and they're both mediocre action titles.   You can do a lot better.

EDF is actually a really good party game.  anybody can get into it.  4 buttons ffs, plus the concept is stupidly fun.  it's more like playing a side-scrolling shooter with co-op than a action game.

Mass Effect will (hopefully) be the game of the fucking forever. I rarely ever get into pre-release hype but this game has me springing boners like a 14-year old in summertime.

After that,

Bioshock, Halo 3, Crackdown, Orange Box, Empire Earth III, Command & Conquer Tiberium, Super Stardust HD in some order.

Might make my top-10 and still need to play: SM Galaxy, Zelda DS, Uncharted, Crysis, Sim City Societies, Blue Dragon, VF5

I enjoyed stuff like Forza, PGR3, CoD4, Skate, Guitar Hero 3... but definitely not t-10 material.

COD4:
I have been waiting so long for this game.  I skipped COD3, but I loved the hell out of COD2's singleplayer.  The multiplayer in 4 is insanely addicting, fast paced, and geniusly built with battlefield 2 kind of rank and unlock system.  The last multiplayer game I loved was battlefield 2 and 2142, so this game was awesome.
The single player is all I ever wanted out of a single player.  I want moments where so many things are happening, with shots flying everywhere, team mates doing whatever the fuck they are doing, explosions etc.

Final exams are starting to come around, so I'll have to wait a while to play SMG, Uncharted, and Mass effect.  NOT ENOUGH TIME.   :'(

you'll hate single player if you play it on veteran.  it would've probably made my GOTY list but veteran left such a bad taste in my mouth.  :yuck

otherwise, great game all around.

Easily CoD4 for me, as close as a CS killer has gotten. Still weaker due to alot of imba issues and nade spam. Its fucking great though, despite me having trouble getting good at it. Getting use to tf2 took me like 3 sessions lol. Im having trouble shaking off 1:1 K:Ds in this :(

LOLZ SILLY TVC DIDNT MENTION ORANGE BOX.

Even if you would put OB in the mix, still CoD 4 :(.
