So basically everyone around my age, and probably a little older and younger, grew up repeatedly watching Goonies.  Rollicking adventure.  Fun.  Cave.  Pirates.  Kids.  It was a good time.  And who doesn't love Astoria?  Why waste time describing a movie we have all seen a billion times?

Anyway, like many people around my age, I saw Goonies approximately like 4 times a week probably for the better part of a decade or so.  But even as a kid, with totally unrefined critical capacities, I knew it was a fundamentally shitty movie.  Since I didn't have the ability to put pieces together and figure out the big picture, I guess the Little Things were what clued me in concerning its lack of quality.  Today, I only remember one of those Little Things since I do not subject myself to watching crap anymore, unless it features Malcolm McDowell and/or anal fisting.

Basically, there is some shot in the movie right after the goonies have gone through some particularly wet portion of the tunnels, but they are completely dry.  There was no possible way they could have dried themselves off.  This like, ruins the whole movie, because it calls the wetness into attention, and then you notice that none of the kids, and especially none of the Fratellis, get as filthy as they should have.  By the end of the movie, everyone's clothes would have been shitty mud brown, torn to shreds, and bloody, but nooooooo, they all look mostly presentable at the end of the movie.  It's completely fucking ridiculous, and it totally destroys the illusion.  The Goonies is the most overrated 80s movie next to Ferris Shitty Bueller.

well, sure. ferris bueller is like a 90 minute Twix commercial.

Goonies II has underage mermaid boobies
Goonies I has no Annie the Mermaid at all, not even with a seashell bra
Goonies II > Goonies I

What should I watch tonight? Choose one: A Boy and his Dog, Road Warrior Blu-ray, Hula Girls

the creepy MIDI music when you entered a room in Goonies 2 and the point and click interface scared the shit out of me as a kid

I remember playing this with friends and laughing, we'd say that the brown walls were walls of shit

I like the Goonies!

But I really dislike Ferris Bueller. Wow, Broderick was really a dick in that movie...how was he even likable?

Neverending Story is the best Fantasy movie of the 80's...well...Legend comes close to it :bow

It makes me sad that people dislike Legend and its awesome Tangerine Dream score  :'(

The Goonies is the most overrated 80s movie next to Ferris Shitty Bueller.

 :lol, so true.

Since this is the 80's we're talking about, I'm going to assume the director failed to notice the lack of continuity in between hits of blow.

I didn't see the Goonies until way past childhood (I whiffed on a bunch of the mandatory 80's nostalgia bits), but I was pretty impressed with how much they let the kids talk over each other.

It was like Johnny's First Robert Altman Movie or something.

My first Robert Altman movie was actually 3 Women, which is fucking awesome.  I have only seen that and Images, which is also fucking awesome.  Most of his movies sound boring, and I will never ever see anything with MASH in the title.

This is perhaps the dumbest critical piece you've ever written, if not the only. Seems like a slippery slope to me. How many other movies feature unrealistic screw ups like that? The good far outweighs the "bad" in this case. The Goonies was the bees knees to me as a kid. I especially loved the naked statue; that was perhaps the beginning of my fetish for genitalia exposure

Gosford Park is really fun, if you have a tolerance for talky British stuff.  It's worth it just for Stephen Fry's cameo, which is awesome and completely out of sync with the rest of the cast.

I like The Goonies -- not really enough to own a copy, but enough that I'd watch it if it was on TV or some friend said, "Come over tonight, we're watching The Goonies."  What makes it so awful?  (Aside from positively irrelevant continuity errors)

Funnily enough, I don't think I've watched the Director's Cut. I've only viewed the cheesy Theatrical cut (which I like, I don't mind a lil' cheese). I think the DVD I own has both versions, I'll be watching it later.

I liked all those movies as kid.  But, some years ago, when Goonies came out on DVD for the first time, I rewatched it and found it very, very average and not like I remembered it.  I don't even remember Goonies II!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off was great though.  Don't hate.

oh I thought you meant you didn't remember it at all.

um, I remember that it would be FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE without the Nintendo Power map showing all the connexions between Omote and Ura.

I also remember it being one of those games that starts out BALLS HARD and gets much easier as you get new skills, more life, etc.

why is FB being included amongst kid flicks? It may have been 80's but it was decently adult pg-13 flick.

It's one of the classically overrated 80s movies.  It appears people have finally come around and recognize that The Breakfast Club sucked ass, but they still cling to Bueller.

My parents rented The Lost Boys way back right after it came out, but they didn't let me watch it, 'cause my mom noted that it was "pretty wild."  So, naturally, I imagined that it was full of vampire sex and nudity.

I finally got around to watching it last month.  It's a hair-metal Home Alone, before the fact - or Goonies if you like - "sexed up" with a bunch of gore at the end, with homoeroticism coming out its pores.

I am so glad I never watched it when it was new.
