Drinky Crow Reviews Supernatural Season 1
« on: October 18, 2006, 01:37:53 PM »
I'm a sucker for anything with horror or occult elements, and have been known to endure pure shit like say, Ghost Ship, just because WOO HEY GHOSTS AND GORE.

In that spirit -- lulz -- I picked up Season 1 of the WB series Supernatural. It is a show about two pretty boys that go around hunting the fell forces of the occult because a demon killed their mom. Eventually, their dad shows up and they spend a fair few scenes grimacing at him (as he likewise grimaces back at them) because HEADSTRONG KIDS VERSUS AUTHORITARIAN DAD HOO HAW.

The Verdict: It's solid. I'll watch Season 2. (Also Season 2 has a flesh-eating killer clown in it, which I simply can't resist.)

The Good: Asylum episode; evil painting episode; dead kid in the lake episode; evil Nordic God turned scarecrow episode; a lot of the dialogue is sharp; classic rock tunes; Jensen Ackles and Jared Pada-whassisfuck are good actors despite their purpose as panty-moisteners for the pubescent set; BLACK '64 IMPALA.

The Bad: The "homages" to other horror movies -- The Ring, Carrie, The Shining et al aren't exactly subtle. It's one thing to reference as a sly wink to the audience; it's another thing to rip entire scenes and concepts wholesale. Oh, and the season finale rips ALIAS in the worst possible way. Obviously, somebody wanted their contract renewed *bad*. Lastly, the demons in the main arc aren't very scary when they aren't mutilating and incinerating peoples' loved ones, and they act cocky/funny. Boo.

The Lolz: RACIST DEATHTRUCK EPISODE -- starring KKKRISTINE! LULZ NERDS WITH WEBSITE ACCIDENTALLY CREATE EVIL UNDEAD HILLBILLY. WHY AREN'T THE BROTHERS WANTED IN EVERY STATE IN THE UNION?

I love the Impala and the tunes. I like Ackles, think the other guy is a twat though. Its watchable, but hardly unmissable.

Well, his character is supposed to be a whiny twat. Come on; his wibbling lip act when daddy chews him out is precious. He's supposed to be the bishie one. Dean (Jensen) is there to stand in for us dudes, while Sam (Jared) is there to pout for the sucidegirls set.

Yeah, Old Man Winchester was awesome. Just a beaten-down hardcore old motherfucker with an axe to grind. I'd hate to be on his bad list.

I've only watched about half of season 1, up to the racist Death Truck or the Scarecrow one, whichever was last (I think Death Trcuk because I couldn't watch the whole thing).

I like it, and my feelings largely mirror Drinky's.  I'd like to think that all the ripoffs from classics are just homages, but I get the sinking feeling they're not a lot of the time.

Viewership dropped off heavily after the RACIST DETHTRUK episode, from 5.4M viewers to 3.9M viewers. I'd like to think that's because it was just such a stupid episode and somewhat preachy to boot, but I'll lay even odds that half the largely Midwestern audience watching a show with classic rock tunes and muscle cars and tough-guy Aryan lads just didn't like their show getting all n*ggered up. The mocha gal Dean was gettin' his miscegenation on with was a total smokin' hottie, though -- bedroom eyes FTW!

The series has been on its A game for season 2 thus far. Last weeks episode was interesting cause they are exploring the brothers relationship more and more pushing it to the edge at times. I dont like the pretty boy thing but damnit i like this show. I like blade and to me this is like better than blade cause its dealing with the occult.

I'm so sad the dad died to save his son. He's gone, the poor dude dies on Greys Anatomy and Supernatural wtf. He's not coming back but in the form of dreams and shit from beyond cause they burned his body.

I'm still waiting for a vodoo episode with zombies. That would rock.
