Overrated games.

What are games that are universally hyped yet you just don't see what all the hoopla is about?

Here are some of my choices: (I'm not saying that these games are bad, just overrated)

GTA3 and above:  Even when the game was released I could never get into due to the horrendous graphics, boring fetch quest type mechanics, and "I'm cool and hip" attitude. 

Legend of Zelda: LTTP: Again, this is not a bad game, but I can't think why anyone would consider this the best Zelda.  OoT craps all over it.  And in regards to the traditional Zeldas, it's inferior to Link's Awakening.  Link's Awakening's pacing is much more varied and has more charm.  I just don't get the love affair with this game.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Zzzzz.  The second half redeems this game, but its beginning is boring and the controls are clunky and terribly designed.  MGS2 is still the king.  That is until MGS4.

Ico - the game is average to bad, I can handle that. Hell, I actually enjoy several games which are classified as average to bad: Nanobreaker, Shenmue, Global Gladiators... but when a game has a following of 3 million obsessed losers saying over and over: "the PAL and Jap cover art is BEAUTIFUL, why did NA get dicked, thanks to Ico games are now art omg" thats when you have major problem. These fegs need to pick up a GC and play Killer 7 if they actually want to experience some AAA art-house gaming.

Zelda: Oot - the game is shit today, looks like complete ass, like 98% of all N64 games. People need to stfu about 'Hyrule Field' wow theres a patch of grass with nothing on it except for some gay skeletons, fuck amazing gaming experience, might have been OK in 1997... but considering Croc and Jersey Devil came out the same year psshsht

NSMB - New Super Mario Ass, one of the most boring 2d platformers I have ever played, they should have just released a port of SMB1 with updated visuals or something, at least then the level design would have been worth a handful of shit and the game would have actually been fun to play. 2/10

I always have issues with the word 'overrated', considering the definition is something that gets more praise than it deserves. Games like OoT and GTA3 shouldn't qualify since, whether you like the games or not (I don't care for the GTA series, personally) you have to acknowledge what they did for their time, and deserved every bit of praise that they got. And in that sense, there's no way any of these could be overrated, as I said, independent of whether you like the games or not. But whatevs.

MGS3 = shitgame. Worthless storyline. I don't give a fuck about The Boss. I thought we would get a story on Big Boss. Gay bosses and horrific codec convo's. Awful additional characters, that medical doctor was boring as shit and that stereotype black guy was accidentally time-traveled to the '60. Hayter's voice acting was downright C-movie quality.

FFX = shitgame.

Breath of Fire 5 DQ = I'm sorry but my idea of a RPG is not a lame dungeon crawler with poopgraphics. This game sucks balls.

That's what's so great about San Andreas. It goes so over-the-top with it's "cool and hip" gangsta attitude, that it actually becomes a parody of "cool and hip" gangsta attitude. The story is quite hilarious and awesome. It's the only one of the series I've actually beat. Plus, when you get tired of quests, you can make your guy eat pizza until he pukes.

Overrated should simply be reserved for shit like Shenmue that has no value whatsoever besides outing Sega diehards and internet lulz.

But Shenmue gets more hate than it gets love, thus, it's actually underrated

Ever "big game" ever is overrated and overhyped.

My picks are most of the Nintendo titles post-SNES.  They took some of my favorite 2D titles and turned them into 3D garbage on a shitty cartridge-based platform, which incidentally, was also over-hyped and overrated to hell. 

When I really stop and think about it, Super Mario Galaxy has been the first Mario game I've LOVED since Super Mario World and All-Stars came out on the SNES.  (I didn't really care for Yoshi's Island either)

mgs3 has the best gameplay of the series so far. it starts out very very slow--the first 1-2 hours are basically cutscenes--but after that it's just pure omgness.

I just hated the fact that its a stealth game and it was just frustrating switching camo and sneaking, things which are essential in the stealth aspect of the game.  I never played the subsistence re-release with the new camera.  Did that help with the sneaking, bud?

Subsistence is what we should have gotten in the first place.  It's much better with the new camera.

I still like the original Metal Gear Solid the best.  I don't think it's ever going to be topped.

the switching camo stuff was kinda tedious at first, but i dunno, i got used to it after a while. and it didn't really take that much time to switch the camo, but i'm glad they're streamlining that for mgs4.

subsistence is basically the way the game is meant to be played. the new camera works really well most of the time, and when it doesn't--in the small rooms/bases--you can just switch to the old camera by pressing the r3 button.

i had a lot more fun playing subsistence than the original release.

I'm sure I would've enjoyed MGS3 a lot more if I played subsistence because of the revamped camera.  The game is basically broke the way they initially released it.  Top down view + fighting The End = busted ass gameplay.
