saint's row > uncharted
« on: December 08, 2007, 05:37:54 PM »
+ main character of saint's row -- shouta -- much cooler than nathan drake. shouta drives a rusty truck and kills hookers and hobos. nathan drake flirts with old men and creepy girlthings with thumb-sized clits.
+ saint's row has good, meaty explosions. uncharted has stupid cartoon volcanos and psone-era translucent bitmaps.
+ saint's row is street thuggin'. uncharted is sahara faggin'.
+ saint's row doesn't take no sass from the bitches. in uncharted, you become a bitch.

you mean gibs?  or is this when the guys are still alive?

some say uncharted is better at shooting than platforming.  is the shooting controls better than Gears (I assume it's controls are closer to Gears than R6).

I don't know.  I've heard (kitowny lol) say you move around a lot in uncharted rather than just stay in one spot and shoot until the enemies die.  although, in gears, you do move around a lot in firefights.  is there anything uncharted does well?

I'm almost done with Uncharted.  I'll give final thoughts later on but I have to say that it's incredibly overrated.  The core gameplay just isn't very well done.  With so many AAA shoooters this year, it's even more noticeable that the gunplay mechanics in Uncharted are a step below the best in this genre.

Most of the time, you and your enemies are shooting at one another from very far distances, which just isn't very exciting.   The inaccurate crosshairs also make the long range shooting an exercise in frustration.  I often miss an enemy even when a he was clearly in my crosshairs.

Sony fans have been raving about Uncharted's graphics and for the most part, they're well done.  However, the animations are quite frankly subpar.  Despite all the hype about Uncharted's animations being revolutionary, they're not even up to the standards of Fear, a 2 yr old game.  Other than headshots, enemies don't seem to animate differently no matter where you shoot them.  Also, like Dcharlie mentioned, the bullet dodging animations just look stupid as hell.

Overall, the shooting elements in Uncharted are very mediocre, which is a big deal because the game is 80% shooting.  There are many titles this fall that'll do a better job of satisfying your shooting hunger than Uncharted.

It makes sense to talk about Kittonwy when discussing Uncharted.  Kittonwy's views on Uncharted basically encompass everything we've been told about Uncharted by Naughty Dog and Sony, which can be easily summarized as this: Uncharted is better than every game ever made in every single aspect.  Any true gamer should be annoyed by this sort of nonsensical logic.

Better graphics than Crysis
Best soundtrack in a game, rivaling the big holywood scores
Best AI in a game
Best animation system ever
Best story line
Best script
Best shut the fuck up because you've no idea what you are talking about.

Seriously, what do you think of the gunfight mechanics?  I really think they're pretty damn weak.  The melee needs no discussion since it's impossible to pull off anything but square x 5 times.

You'll be unplesantly surprised .  Many of the non-Xbots here have sweared that it's one of the worst games ever.

You guys are a little harsh on the game.

How so?  Our criticisms are legit.  For example, a C- game like Strangehold had far more varied animations for enemies taking damage.  It's pretty disappointing that in a "groundbreaking" game like Uncharted, an enemy keels over in the same manner, regardless if you shot him in the crotch or back.

this is the closest thing to an assassin's creed thread i can find on the front page. somebody said 'assassin's creed' in here. my enthusiasm for that game is fading fast. the cities are absoutely beautiful, free-running is the greatest thing ever, and basically the look and feel of the game are so strong that i was willing to overlook the absence of anything much to do. but i'm five or six assassinations in, and the game does not ramp up or change at all. you just repeat the routine of that first city segment. once you've killed that first guy, you've basically seen everything. insert patrick stewart on extras

i don't know if i'm going to slog through the rest or just move on while my impression of the game is still basically positive. the story is kind of intriguing -- or not the story as such, which is nonsense, but just trying to puzzle out the connections between desmond's world and altair's. i thought the whole FUTURE VIRTUAL REALITY angle would needlessly impose on a crusades setting that's interesting enough by itself, but it's actually one of the game's best touches

hi kyle

i'm playing the 360 version. and i still think ac is worth trying. its nonexistent mission design does remind me of crackdown, which i hated. but it's aesthetically gorgeous, and the cities are laid out in such a way that jumping continuously from rooftop to rooftop is a pleasure -- actually it's a subtly different pleasure in each city. crackdown failed completely on both of those counts

so...i finally started playing uncharted, and it's totally first-rate. i did well to come to this right after assassin's creed -- the platforming here seems hokey by comparison, but good god it's nice to be back in the presence of tight linear design and snappy cutscenes. i love the momentum with which it moves from one gorgeous setting to the next. as a videogame pistol-fancier, i love the gunplay too -- the absence of auto-aim makes headshots really satisfying, and the enemies move just enough to make good targets. the difficulty seems well-balanced on hard.

so as much as i've grown to admire xfag dandyism, which saves its praise for cheap knockoffs like saint's row and forza, i'll have to side with the sfags this time. they've got the right of it -- for all the wrong reasons, i'm sure

i still have sfag in me -- i am a total slut for the psp, and the ps3 has the best downloadable game in super stardust hd! still, there's just something offensive about the ps3 and its budget gpu, and the half-assed waggle in the sixaxis. when the library starts to get the hothot loli strategy rpgs i so adore and rack up some decent jappy exclusives, i might become more fond of it, but for now, it's a more reliable xbox 360 0.8 -- an xbox 288, if you will

i didn't. they lied about taking the sixaxis shit out. and they can eat my dick because of it.

They made grenades unusable, but, luckily, I don't use grenades in games that require you to toggle them to throw them.

uncharted has a lot of problems that i can't believe made it into the final build, namely the slow default aiming speed with the 0 autoaim (and then couple that with the really erratic checkpoint system). I can't tell you the number of times I'd die at the end of a sequence and have to repeat the entire sequence. I ended up using melee a lot more than I had anticipated because mashing square was a safer, quicker kill than having to futz with moving the damn cursor over people's heads again.

...and if you missed, they actually moved. Which is seriously credit to Naughty Dog. I've missed plenty of headshots in Gears or Halo where they just stand there and I get another shot.

I think Uncha's cover system is really fantastic. I think it's flexible, fast, and allows for you to do some really nimble stuff. If you go back to Gears after Uncha, cover feels restrictive and limiting. But Gears feels like a stop and pop game. Its gunfights dont play out like Uncharted's...uncharted often made me feel like I should be pushing through an environment instead of stopping and popping whereas Gears just felt like I should be barely moving.

I don't know. Ultimately Uncharted has the mechanics that make it feel so good and yet the shooting was so damn frustrating. It's great execution with kind of assy game design, imo.

But I still prefer uncharted.

I hate sixaxis but it didn't bother me that much in Uncharted.  I just use the stick for grenade control.  The game doesn't seem to respond to the sixaxis controls unless you're pointedly moving the gamepad.   It's almost as if ND put in the sixaxis as an afterthought.  It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Sony made ND put in some sixaxis controls.  There've been more than a few PS3 games where sixaxis seemed superfluous.  Even though the sixaxis didn't bother me that much in Uncharted, I would have appreciated having the choice to turn it off.  I can't think of 1 PS3 game where I haven't turned off sixaxis when given the option to do so.

What I hate most about the grenades is that they take some time to explode, just like Gears of War.   It looks really dumb when the enemies are just standing around to wait for the grenades to explode.  It's more unbearable than Gears because the enemies in Uncharted actually move pretty fast and the environments are less cramped.

Other issues I have with the gameplay are the aforementioned random barrels, slow gun movements, and melee that is pretty much limited to just pressing the square button.  The brutal combo looks good when I can do it but it's too bad that the timing is almost impossible.  Also, I liked how the enemies won't just stand there and give you head shot opportunities.  However, the bullet dodging animations are just too crude and excessive.  I know it's just a videogame but those dodging movements don't feel natural even for a videogame.   Uncharted was fun enough for me to beat it but it's totally a 2.5 rate game.
