Not really all that interested in this myself, but I did recently receive Forza 2 for free and tested it against the GT5P demo and I can't imagine how ANYONE could suggest that Forza 2 is the nicer looking game.  In all honesty, I didn't even think Forza looked as nice as Ridge Racer 6.  :\  It's very bland.

Still, I'm not a big fan of these games at this point, so they really only exist for graphical comparison purposes.  :P

I take it you're a fan of low resolution textures, boxy environments, and unstable framerates then.

CoD4 is a nice enough looking game, but it's way too flawed to put it up there with the best looking games on the market.  It doesn't even begin to compare to the likes of Gears of War, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Crysis, UT3, and the like.  It feels like an enhanced Quake engine game (which is actually somewhat true).

GT looks noticeably nicer than Forza.  But technically, are Forza and GT really that far apart?  GT's graphics have always looked more "realistic" because everything is really dark and gritty.  Ironically, GT's lighting is actually less real than most racers.  I've yet to see a real world location where everything is darkly shaded in broad daylight.

well GT doesn't use normal maps I think so that could make the lighting look weirder but more realistic at some angles..  Has GT5 P improved a lot from GTHD?  I honestly thought that was a PS2 GT4 track with new crowds and car models.

Visually, GT is pushing something like 5,000 more polys/car with twice the amount of cars at a higher resolution. In terms of physics and stuff, I don't think PD has been as upfront, so I can't really compare, but Forza did calculations at some absurd rate.

I think Forza was pushing 360 calculations per second, remember Agent Icebeezy mentioning it time and time again.  No idea why this guy Kyle is giving you shit considering the amount of time you put into F2, you were all over that game when it released.  You played with Joates as well, who was one of the best players in the entire Forza community.  That kid stinks at just about every 360 shooter, but you put a racer in his hands and my god.  It's not even fair.  I kept declining his invites to avoid the embarrassment.

Edit: Looking forward to some impressions.

That's why he is crazy.

and about Forza/GT, Forza is the better game (physics, damage, online...etc) but PD graphical engine is superior.

In the selection menus, the GT cars look far superior, but in game, it's a closer call.  I'm leery to trust PD's numbers because they add up to about 200 Million polys/sec which is impossible even for the most advanced PC game.  Polys/sec have always been the hardest visual aspect to judge unless the games are wide apart, but in this case, they're not.  Still, GT clearly has the edge in car modeling.  Even on the PS1/PS2, PD was able to make better looking cars than most games running on more powerful hardware.

on a technical level, if GT5 ships without screen tearing (which the demo had lots of), i'll give it credit for being the better looking game.  if not, forza 2 wins just for rocking a solid 60fps without hiccups.  i still think rr6 is the best racer on 360 though.  :P

i think what i find most confusing about this is the fact that (again) a sony first party game is shipping with online missing.

This isn't the first time for the region, and i doubt it'll be the last at this rate.

Motorstorm - no online for 5 months
Mingol - most of the online modes missing
GT5P - no online for first two weeks (i want to see how this pans out - i won't be surprised if the online doesn't make it until next year)

Seriously - Polyphony have to have been working on this since a good year or so before the launch (i know various versions/restarts happened, but come now... ) . I'm guessing they just don't have the online nouse or something.

I don't know what's up with Motorstorm (probably just weren't finished), but it is weird how the other two studios screwed that up.

yeah I think it was something like 100,000-400,000 physics calculations possible at a time depending on what you were doing and the physics would be recalculated 360 times a second.  it was so that when you go on the runway on seguna lena (I think that's how you spell it) at 180 mph, you can feel every fucking bump on your controller.  GT is known for having a really distinct feel with those videogame steering wheels among the fans so I doubt they'll overhaul the physics from the PS2 version and make it completely realistic.  It'll be improved (especially in the sim mode) but it has to keep the same general feel and I heard from fans of GT that it feels a lot like a real car when using the steering wheel.

I don't think anyone actually thinks they look like that ingame.  Not even gaffots do.  That said, it actually looks pretty nice.  I thought the demo track environment sucked.  I really look forward to seeing this london track.  Not sure if I want to spend money for the demo...but GT5 probably isn't coming out for another year...

you should make as much noise as you can to get Polyphony to fix the issues this game obviously has, rally everyone you know to bitch about it until they make a game worthy of the GT moniker that actually takes the game into new realms and THEN and only then should you think about getting a PS3 IF they deliver.

as i heard.. GT5 will come out late 2008.. theoretically, they should have much time to fix GT5P problems..

I'll wait for it and see if it's worth it to buy a PS3 for GT5 or not.. based on your Impressions about it of course  8)

i think right now what i am most bummed with is that this is massively over priced at $50.
It really is quite the insult for quite how bare bones things are.

I'm 99% sure all the issues will be fixed for GT5 (i'd go for early 2009 myself) , but i am honestly shocked at how uninspired it all is. The previous Prologue left me gagging for more, but this one just feels like an insult.

1980 yen max was more appropriate.

C'mon now, you've had 5,000 yen's worth of fun with it already! I haven't seen you this excited since granny caught her tit in the mangle (as it were)

Yeah, you're kind of an idiot.

Why would you make such a statement?  I feel that Crysis is currently the most impressive game on the market.  I've never once made a claim that Resistance and Ratchet are in the same league.  All three look better than CoD4, though.

I posted some of DCharlies impressions on OA and TJHooker is saying that he's not a real Londoner and that he doesn't really know what London looks like and that his family only goes to London when they get lucky and go on holiday and that today charlie lives in Japan to live out his otaku fantasies.  I'm guess I'm just saying I'm sorry for posting those there since I really didn't think Hooker was that insane.

what...why?  TJ just trolls everything.  he's like somethings alternate account.  he insults US and Microsoft.  that's basically it.  I specifically said that you're impressions are probably unbiased at least on the technical details since you say stuff like it going down to 30 fps or tearing a lot.

i seriously doubt that the in-car view drops as far as 30fps -- actually you're suggesting that it drops below 30fps. it was 60 w/tearing in the demo. drops to 30 would be plausible with v-sync enabled -- but you're probably just seeing relatively small drops from 60 when it tears.

i might buy this -- i think i've got 2600 psn points sitting in my japanese account, so that'll soften the blow

i don't see why the cockpit view would more than double the rendering load -- if it's something to do with the london track, then the framerate should suffer in other views as well. tearing can certainly make framerate seem much lower than it is. in any case i just bought a ¥3000 card from ncs, so i guess i'll see tomorrow :'(

i didn't mean i'd stop for TJH, there's another poster or two in there who said they've stopped posting/coming and , yeah, it's getting a little old on myside too.

Somehow I doubt that Jotaro would be missed.

Gotta give props to OA.  They've got some entertaining people.

If I were an Xfag, I'd be mad impressed by DC Charlie.. being an Xfag isn't just a side hobby to him, it's his way of life. He takes it to a whole nother level never before seen. He's like an Xfag Emperor.

Groo's shot looked good but it had exactly the issue that I predicted, which was that everything's too dark in GT5.  The excessive shadowing is even more obvious if you compare the real-time shot to the touched up shot.  I wish PD would stop using this dark shadows technique to make things look more real.

Has there been any confirmation if the physics model is better than Forza 2's? F2 is the first racing game I play with assists off and manual transmission because it just feels so f'ing dead on. I tried playing the GT HD demo after F2 and it felt like I was driving a brick.

xfag SPACE emperor

As far as the physics model, what I am planning on doing to test them is to pick the same car with the same tuning settings and do a few laps on Suzuka....but that would require Sony to A) release the game here and B) add tuning to GT5P. I can't guarantee GT5P's default tune is the same in Forza's.

Again, PD has said very little about the game's actual driving mechanics...but they have no interface with the community like T10 did, so I guess that's not altogether (lol like the andrews dude lolol) surprising.

I was pretty impressed with the Professional setting in Prologue Demo, but it's such a small taste that you can't really say anything conclusively.

I don't know how the hell you people know how to tune anything.  They don't teach you in the manual or even in the strategy guide.  I wish there was a setting for automatic tuning.  Trying to be a car mechanic in a racing game is not fun at all, imo.

marvelharvey at gaf thinks gt5p has a better driving model than forza 2. and he races actual cars or something. not that i can tell the difference. the whole forza vs gt thing cracks me up -- you get these totally ignorant physics analyses from people who may as well just say 'i like xbox' or 'i on the other hand like playstation.' THEY'RE THE SAME FUCKING GAME

Those "realistics" racing sims still seem pretty fake to me.  Some of the cars I've driven IRL were able to pull off much tougher curves than they could in games.  Making a Rt angle turn at 60 miles/hr really isn't hard as GT makes it appear to be.
