The fact that COD4 outsold SMG, probably the GOTY and BY FAR the best game on the Wii, is pretty damning evidence of the patheticness (apparently this isn't a word, fuck you Webster) of the Wii's userbase.

If it's any consolation, SMG outsold what Sunshine did in its first 5 months.

Yea, I saw that in the GAF thread. That's definitely great. But was GC's userbase as big as the Wii's is now? And SMG is by all accounts a vastly superior game with even less competition. Also, when it's all said and done, SMG will no doubt shoot past COD4. It might even happen next month.

What I said:

Quote
Consoles have gone through it before with fighters and rpgs post-ff7, but since this time it feels close to what hurt PC gaming I guess I am a little more worried because PC gaming never got over it like how the public got over fighters during those years.

So it hurt PC gaming, hurt it in regards to genre and still PC gaming lacks in genre now. This hurts the quality of PC gaming I would say.

What are you talking about?

I don't know how much PC sales are hurting or whatever - but IMO the emergence of a substitute product in the next gen consoles (360 mainly, PS3 to a much lesser extent) is what would hurt the PC. This is similar to the early to mid 90's when arcades were hot with games with better graphics than could be offered on a console - fighting games is the best example. PC is similar in that consoles (360 is the best example) are now offering both the same games on PC and an online service comparable. There will always be The Sims and World of Warcraft and stuff on PC that will never die, but the consoles have caught up a ton in graphics, onlnie service, and comparable games so it is not a legitimate substitute product. Go read your Porter's Five Forces and it fits perfectly.

This is pretty accurate, but PC gaming was doubly hurt because of the economic downturn in the tech industry at the turn of the century, and the national economic climate turning to shit.  PC gaming, while not as expensive as console fans would have you believe, is still significantly more expensive than console gaming.

Due to the recession, and the way PC hardware has developed since then (the GPU market has really gotten abysmal), I don't think a true recovery is possible unless there is a large initiative between, say, MS, one of the GPU makers (not likely right now), and a large number of development houses (also not likely, beng that they woul dhave to support a LARGE AMOUNT of them to get the initiative to work).

Yeah, I would agree with that. Trends in the technology sector defintely has an effect on that - combined in general with competition. I can't remember the name of the law - that transistors/storage capabilities double every six months - but when that happens it may improve technology, but more and more people are willing to settle for not having the cutting edge thing. A decade ago, there were a lot of benefits in say, having your storage capabilities doubled - but nowadays there seems to be a lot less advantages of it. Is having a 600GB hard drive worth anymore than having a 300GB hard drive really, for 99.99% of the populace? Is Vista really a necessary - or even WANTED update from XP for its cost for a lot of people anymore?

I think that effect combined with a substitute product changes things significantly. People don't see the need to buy cutting edge things for their cost, due to diminishing returns. Then in turn, developers don't see the advantage in developing a product to take advantage of things people don't own. Like I said, I don't know much about PC's - but have a ton of developers even used DirectX 10 yet to its ability? Combine that glass ceiling effect with the fact that theres all of a sudden a great substitute product pretty affordable, and then you would set yourself up for a decline.

Don't forget that Wii fans pretend they know stuff about things they are clearly clueless about and are unable to admit when they are wrong, and instead try to blame the reader by saying that they said something else entirely.

I get on my high horse, yes, but I'll admit when I'm wrong--very easily.  Anyone that reads my posts knows that I am sometimes wrong, and I admit it, OFTEN.  Etoilet, well, I guess he is trying to like High School Musical 2 more than the Shins since it is objectively better and all, what with the sales numbers.

IMO, the future of the PC games market is in the indie and casual game areas. There seems to be something for pretty much everyone (except the graphics/production value whores) in here, and it's only gonna grow. SC2 will definitely help out the PC gaming scene when that comes out.

I admitted when I was wrong in it, though, and I said why I was wrong.  I also apologized to ParticleReality about it elsewhere.  Don't forget that part of my original action, locking the thread, was because I didn't want to see a shitstorm kill the kid if he was telling the truth, even though I had my doubts.  I was being fair to all parties, it was a spur of the moment decision, so maybe things didn't come out smoothly.

In the end, when all was clear and obvious, I admitted I was wrong, and that is what important.  Etoilet would have said I NEVAR SAID THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE! STOP MISREADING ME!

I'd rather let things be.  It's the internet and this will all be ancient history in a month.  Zeed kind of instigated that whole thing, and he's on my watchlist, but I want to say a bunch of shit about letting the healing process begin.  I'm considering that whole thing a Freebie for all involved.  Next time, a charity even like the one that happened will not be allowed to happen in the first place on the forum.  By that I mean forum-to-individual charity.

I'd like to not talk about this subject any more (as it has nothing to do with the discussion, and it is EVIDENCE of me admitting when I am wrong--I have no idea what Smooth Groove was trying to prove), but let's just say that situation had me a bit concerned.  I was harsh, but I was a bit suspicious, too.  I have a general rule of not trusting teenagers (it is far and away a general good rule of thumb), and not trusting people on message boards in general.  The whole thing seemed fishy to me from the first charity message, but I let it go and figured something about fools and their money.

Maybe my tone was incorrect, but I still stand by my course of action, which was in both the best interest of the forum and ParticleReality.

The whole situation sucked and there will be no further charity on the forum.  The level of BS in that thread had me considering turning in my modship.  I'm not usually an asshole like that, but the whole think irked me.

Last thing I will say about it:  I was told to just ban everyone involved.  Instead I did what I did.  If you think there's an issue with being harsh, but actively wanting to find out the truth, instead of issuing multiple blanket bans when somebody that is clearly emotionally staked in his contact with the message board is involved, then I don't think you're probably that much smarter than someone like etoilet.

I looked at the situation in as many different ways as possible before I did what I did, but I was time constrained.  Sorry if not every word was a rose, but it appeared there were multiple sides to the story, and I quickly figured that a confrontational tone would more quickly get me the truth.

its over for Sony in NA.  they have no momentum whatsoever and their fanbase doesn't care about their games.  They wanted to trojan horse blu ray and thats what they got.  Uncharted, R and C, all get demolished.  I'm pretty sure companies are already starting to wonder who they should be marketing their games to.

I think PS3 did pretty well too but December's numbers will be more telling of the PS3's future.   It remains to be seen whether the PS3 price cuts would have a long term effect.

quite an encouraging showing by the ps3. 360, as expected, outsold sony's system -- but the ps3 fared surprisingly well. if the ps3 -- and, it's a huge IF -- can maintain that much into feb, they'll be in a great position. with the ps3 outselling the 360 in 2 of the 3 major regions, it's amusing to watch the psychotic anti-sony contingent spin its performance as a negative. 360 is a monster how can you not have a "360 port" when making a game these days.

I actually want to comment on that. I think those scores are kind of shocking on GameCube's exclusives.

Was the industry really that tarded? Does anyone think Rogue Leader is a 9.0? Or SMS a 9.2? On what scale?

Eternal Darkness a 9.2?  :-X I like that game a lot and I don't think it's a 9.2...

total bullshit.

Go back and play mario tennis 64 and compare it to mario power tennis. mario power tennis blows it away. i play with power shots off, and the gameplay is so much better than the 64 version. The 64 version is clunky and janky. I still play the GC version a lot with friends, and it's still amazing.

Best N64 games:

Sin and Punishment
Mischief Makers
Bangai-O (possibly, I haven't played the N64 version, but I hear people rate it over the DC version)
Zelda: TOOT
Zelda: MM (possibly, I haven't played it yet)
Ogre Battle 64
Paper Mario (haven't played much of it but it seemed cool)
F-Zero X

StarFox 64 would be pretty good if it didn't have those free roaming levels and the lame furry character lineup. Never got into the Mario Tennis games, I've always liked Virtua Tennis better.
