How bad is it to eat microwaved food on a daily basis?
« on: December 22, 2007, 10:09:01 AM »
Or at least close to that. I can't really google this without being bombarded with a variety of blogs all apparently written by stay-at-home mothers who cram their extremely (over)healthy lifestyles down your throat every opportunity they get. The one thing that seems to be consistent is that microwaving food can destroy some essential vitamins and nutrients in food. I don't care about that as long as I'm not going to die of cancer before I'm 30. So what's the verdict? Am I (along with a good chunk of the world) slowly bringing myself closer to death every time I use that wonderful box of radiation?

You'll get fat without exercise for sure. I have been living on microwaved and fastfood for the last few years. I'm a wreck  :'(

Well yeah. I'm no where close to fat but I'm definitely out of shape. My diet and exercise are both considerably "unhealthy", but that can be reversed.

Whoops, I'm not fat either. But horribly out of shape. I got a pot belly.

I've heard about the "essential nutrient loss" stuff before, but it was from Jack Lalane (or w/e) trying to hawk food steamers on late night TV.

I dunno, it seems like what you are microwaving matters a lot more than how you are cooking it.

.

Even if we are talking about 'adequate' nutrition as opposed to the hyper-nutrition that people subscribe to today, TV dinners are not the way to go.  They are over-processed, loaded with saturated fats and lacking basic nutrients.

pretty bad.  the massive amounts of preservatives tend to really slow down your metabolism.

"Over" healthy? Jeez dude, they're right. You won't die of cancer most likely, but your body certainly isn't going to be healthy. Microwave dishes are often filled with sodium or cholesterol, and essential vitamins. Not caring about nutrition as long as you don't get cancer is a pretty ridiculous position, but it's your body.

You won't die at 30, you'll bloat at 30. Your metabolism will be shot, and hell you might even have high blood pressure by then. All that oil and salt is going to fuck you up one way or another.

It's not about being a health nazi, it's about health. People don't tell you to stop smoking because they're fascists who want to dominate your life. It's a god damn fact

All cooking destroys nutrients to some degree. Boiling (vegetables, for example) is the worst in this regard.

Overcooking (with any method) absolutely will do this.

-- --

The process of microwaving is that it causes the molecules of the item to "jiggle", thus causing friction and producing heat. It does not change the molecular structure of the food (only if you overcook it).

As someone mentioned above, the real knock against microwavable food (pre-packaged stuff) is that it is loaded with preservatives, saturated fats and sodium.

I ate microwave food repeatedly enough that at a point I could taste the microwave taste. Instant food has some sort of preservative within it that I got sick of.

I can't even eat hot pockets anymore. =(

I meant for the time being. Obviously I can't eat that kind of food forever. I wasn't planning on it.

I'm assuming you're in college, which means you'll eat what you can afford; I wouldn't rely on that stuff solely for those 4 years, but I'm certainly not gonna say don't eat pizza lol. I try to eat healthy. I have oatmeal in the morning and a boneless chicken breast for dinner. Once I get a job next year I'll be able to afford more veggies and stuff. But there's no way I'm giving up certain quick foods. Sometimes you need a frozen egg roll imo!
