Who here thinks about retirement?
« on: January 16, 2008, 08:11:25 PM »
All anyone ever does at this forum is spend.  What happens when social security keels over and you have to come home from work at 97 years old with nothing but a buncha stupid blu-gay disks to represent your lack of foresight!

yeah I think about it.

I have a good plan - if all goes well I should be able to take a 80% retirement in like 12-18 months.

After that I can take a few years off - and then get involved again for like 2-3 years and then retire for good and for-ever.

The first part is pretty much in the bag. ITs the second part that needs solidifying.

I've got a 403b, my wife has a 401k and we've got investments. Plus, I've got a pension since I work in public education. Also, the amount of crap I buy is dwarfed by the amount of money we put into savings each month.

I'm not worried about anything financially.  I don't want to retire in the sense of just laying back and doing nothing.  I always want to be involved in interesting projects.

If you invest 2000 dollars every year starting at 18 and continuing until you are 25, you will have 1 mil in the bank by the time your 65 due to compound interest.  Besta get while the gettins good, Father_Mike.

When I think of retirement I think of the two kinds:
1) Where everyday is an experience as you travel around the world etc.
2) Ending up in a home or 'retirement village', infirm and wondering what the fuck you did with your life.

I think option 2) is the most inevitable and thus the cheapest.

Yep, nursing home prices are insane.  Thank God my parents are in pushing 60 and look like their in their 30s.  They eat healthy, too. Hopefully, they passed on those genes to me.

I plan on checking out like Hemmingway if I have not conquered the world by age 40.  If I do conquer the world, I will push back the Hemmingwayization until between 50 and 60.  I won't let the decline in power that comes with old age conquer me.  Unless there's some sort of android body by then.  I could live like that.

Dood not even - trust me.

even just living off of the interest only gets you 30K or so a year....

You need at least 5-6 MIL to retire young.

Being wealthy these days means having over 100MIL IMO.....I can only hope LOL

Depends on where you live?  Boston, NYC, and San Francisco, no so much.  Des Moines, Phoenix, Boulder, and Houston, yes.

I have a friend that works with old people, she told me the amount of spinsters etc. is depressing; they keep telling her to get married and have children otherwise they'll end up with no one since everyone they know is already dead.

Well, it depends on where and how you want to live.  I don't need a whole lot, and I don't make much more than 30K a year right now, and I'm doing all right.

I don't care about having the flashiest stuff, and I've never given a shit about what my vehicle looks like as long as it rolls from point A to point B.  I don't need a house, and if I do decide to get one I don't need a mansion.  I have pretty simple wants and needs, and as long as I can save enough to assemble that nuclear device and set the atmosphere on fire, I'll be okay.

Im  not even talking about flashy stuff - im talking about overpopulation, inflation and the ever dying economy making this like a final fantasy 7 midgar situation....you know with the poor people below the plates in the slums - and the cozy city with its glass towers being high up above in the sky....over top of the lower slum cities.....

im talking not even being able to see the light of day because you are confined to the underworld because of not having enough $$.

ITs a stretch yeah - but things are really getting scary out there - dumb people keep fucking and spawning 2,000 kids a second, and we are all going to consumer hell.

You're kidding, right?  Because I am 27 and I already feel pretty old.  When I am 38 looking at 40, I will feel like a freakin' mummy.  And at that point I will be exclusively listening to Nico's The Marble Index in order to get me in the mood.

If I haven't made it on my own terms by the time I'm 40, I probably won't at all, so why subject myself to several further decades of self-inflicted mental torment?  I've always put myself first, and I see this as fitting in with that.

I'm totally thinking about it... I put away 16% a year (and the company matches 4% on top of that) into my 401k, and I have a pension plan that takes effect after I've been working there for 5 years (it's gonna be 4 in March for me). My aim is to get out as soon as possible, I'd make a great retiree I think.
