So, tomorrow I go in for the LASIK surgery...
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:29:37 PM »
Fuck, I'm pretty nervous... hope I don't come out with permanent loss of vision or something. I'll post "impressions" or something when I'm done.

My friend did this about a month and a half ago, his vision is 20/20 now, although he sees that rainbow effect in certain lighting.

Personally, I wouldn't mind more rainbows in my life.

Does that mean I'll pee pure gold if I'm a Ron Paul supporter or do I have to be gay for a little bit first?  :o

Thanks everyone for the kind words! The surgery was a total success... here I am, sitting at the computer with 20/20 vision (albeit slightly blurry, which should go away for a few days... I lowered the res. on my desktop to compensate for now).

The first thing they did, was to tape back my eyelids, put a ton of numbing drops in my eye, then insert the ring that holds the eye open. This feels really weird, it's definitely some Clockwork Orange type shit. Then they create the flap over the cornea... I got bladeless treatment, so what they did was lower this giant machine down on my eye, all while having me look at a red light. This was the freakiest part, since once the machine gets locked into position around your eye, you'll only see darkness. Then, they make the flap, (it takes 2 min or so)... the doctor pulls back the flap, and then gears the laser up. The actual laser part wasn't so bad, you'd continue staring at the red light but see all sorts of weird distortions/hazy patterns over it, and you were able to smell the burning. Took about 2-3 minutes as well, and after it was done, the flap was closed.

Yeah, after the first eye was treated, I was about ready to pass out, the doctor and his assistants noticed I was ghost-white, and (since I didn't have much of a breakfast that morning), they gave me some cranberry juice. It was also FREEZING in the room and I couldn't stop shivering, so they brought blankets. After this, they did the other eye which went a lot smoother (since I knew what to expect).

Post-surgery, I had to wear goggles and keep my eye shut for 4+ hours... they say, the longer you keep your eyes shut for, the better... so I had my brother queue up some awesome Nick Warren sets from hybridized.org ... this part wasn't so bad, I had some pain in my eyes (felt like dust or dirt was trapped in there) for the first hour and a half or so, but that went away.

Now, I have to use 2 sets of eyedrops 4 times a day, for the next couple of days. And I can't swim for at least 2 weeks... but other than that, yeah everything was a success and I'll gladly answer any questions you might have, or clarify further.

Is there a certain age limit or anything that may make me unable to have it? I'm 22 and have Astigmatism in my right eye.

How old are you tiesto? The having to keep my eyes closed for 4 hours would freak me out. I also don't know about the eye drops, I have difficulty using them.

Congrats on the surgery.

I'm considering it as well. It seems fairly inexpensive now. http://www.lasikmd.com/cmississauga/price/canadian-patients/cost-canadian-mississauga.en.html

I had astigmatism but then for a summer in middle school I didn't wear glasse and my eyes healed themselves.  How I found out is that when I put on my glasses for school, they blurred my vision more so I went to the optometrist and he said my eyes reverted back to 20/20.  You might want to ask your optometrist what you should do but mine said it only works for astigmatism and not far-sightedness or near-sightedness.  If you're left eye works fine, you can just try it yourself for a couple months and read with the left eye only.

I can do this all day:  ;)

Lasik MD is Canada's leading provider of laser vision correction. As of 2007, LASIK MD performs approximately 40% of the laser vision correction procedures in Canada. [1]

LASIK MD was founded in 2001 by Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Avi Wallerstein

This explains the pricing structure. Trying to fool us gentiles, huh?

To be honest, I don't know if my left eye could be improved or not. If I did get LASIK I'd definitely want it to be one eye at a time, my right eye is so fucked up it can't get much worse.

It's possible to get one eye done at a time, I believe... astigmatisms I think can be fixed as well but its on a case-by-case basis. I was myopic (nearsighted) in both eyes (20/400), which is ideal for LASIK.

Cajole: Well, if you don't mind driving to Commack/Dix Hills I would put in a hearty recommendation for my eye doctor.
flonamen: I'm 25.
Patel: Nope, no seeing dead people.. :(

I dunno, it would be nice to have fixed vision, but I think I'd still wear glasses. I can't imagine myself without glasses. Hell, I don't like the way I look without them.

Same here, although people always tell me I look better without them.  The laser thing just scares me shitless though, plus I have had trouble with my eyesight (it suddenly got worse in December 2006) for the past year, and the doctors can't find anything wrong.

I figure I'll wait another 5-10 years and see how all the people who have had Lasik are holding up then.
