Is there a Laptop that's like the Asus EEE?

Is there a laptop that's similar to this in form factor (size, weight) while um - not sucking? Or something close. Anything.

I just visualized you stopping in for a Gentleman's Latte, getting beeped, and re-enacting that scene from Swordfish dc  :lol

If you are interested in a UMPC then give this thread at fatwallet.com a try.

Apparently the Samsung Q1 UMPC is ringing up at Best Buy for $385.  Sounds like a good deal...don't know if it is still going though.

I saw the Asus yesterday.  Is this the same PC that some GAFfers were creaming over last month?  What's so good about it?  I mean, it's cheap and small, but has like 4gb-8gb of memory and seemed kinda slow.  I could see it for basic web browsing and such, but I can already do that on my pocket-sized iPod Touch.

runs a whole bunch of games - not sure how well though.
And i'd assume you'd be needing to run from an external drive etc etc... :/

I've looked at the Asus EEE - but yeah, not sure i'm that tempted.

Running from an external drive kind of defeats the purpose, I think.  :)  I'll stick with my hacked PSP for portable gaming awesomeness.  DS too.

bump

i'm actually now in the market for one of these.  i like the small size and fast load times (22 sec power on, 9 sec power down).  I'd use it as something for writing and email and browsing quickly.  something I can't really do with a laptop as inexpensively nor as cheaply.  i don't really need it for gaming, i'd be using it as intended.

the only other thing is i've seen the Cloudbook and that seems a bit better specc'd but then it has a bunch of odd design choices like the thumbpad for the mice and it's a bit slower (two minute power up, one minute wake from hibernation).

the think which would make it perfect is if i could use it with EDVO and my cell phone.

I saw a tiny, tiny little Vaio at a Costco once some years back, and never saw it again.  Could never find it on the internet either.  Sony released a smaller handheld-style Vaio PC a year or so ago, too.  The price is like three times that of the Asus though.

If wireless internet is all you need, you ought to look at the iPod Touch.  It's awesome for web browsing and e-mail, and typing is a breeze once you get used to it.

lyte - what sort of net connection are you using? i'm interested in something for browsing on the train but i'm not sure if this is possible yet. emobile seem to have a very inexpensive service that's about 7-8Mbps - is that compatible with the Touch, i wonder?

i have no interest if it means stealing wi-fi at starbucks or whatever.

The iPod Touch will work with any available wi-fi signal available.  It seems to be stronger than my PSP and DS Lite's wi-fi connections too.  I actually don't even have wi-fi right now; someone in my apartment complex has a wi-fi connection that is completely unprotected, and I have been using it nonstop since I got the iPod in December.   :lol  The iPod Touch's Safari browser is incredibly fast and loads up everything much faster than the PSP and DS Lite.  It is by far the best portable internet device I have ever used, and I can see why people are going nuts for the iPhone...it allows you to view pages vertically or horizontally, typing is incredibly responsive, editing is a breeze, and you can easily use your fingertipes to zoom in and out if needed.  Usually just double tapping the screen will make the text on a page fit the screen perfectly too.

I don't know how emobile works, but if it's just a matter of being in an available area and having access, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the Touch.  You might want to try asking on the Macrumors.com forum .

Well I can't answer that since I haven't had any reason for internet outside my place yet.   :-[  When I'm on the go the iPod serves as its primary function, a music player.  It uses wi-fi, so outside use is pretty self-explanatory.  I don't see what advantage a small PC would have in this area...is it that service you mentioned?  Clearly the winner will be the iPhone whenever it comes out here though.

BTW do you know if a lot of hotels in Tokyo and surrounding areas have wi-fi access nowadays?  I'm going to Yokohama for a few days and it would be awesome to just be able to bring the iPod with me instead of lugging my PC...

well i'd be using the internet as secondary.  it's primary function would be to write while i'm on the go.

I don't think I'd be able to do that on anything smaller than a 12" laptop.   For serious writing?  Talk about cramped hands!
