I prefer Dashiell Hammett, though.  I know Chandler's a more accomplished writer and his language is more beautiful, but I like the rough and crude style of Hammett.  Probably why I prefer Maltese Falcon to The Big Sleep.  Sam Spade's a much darker, amoral character than Marlowe.

have you read Hammet's Continental Op Stories?  Check those out.  They're really good.  My Favorite is probably Red Harvest because of the labor elements of the plot.

Yeah, I have the book that collects most of the Continental Op short stories as well as Red Harvest, which I initially read just to see where Kurosawa had ripped the plot off for Yojimbo.

let me turn you onto an amazing anthology

http://www.murdalandmagazine.com/

Published twice yearly by lawyers out of Philly and Baltimore, it's amazing.  It's neo-noir, dark and street level.  I have an extra copy of the first issue.  If you like I can dig it up and mail it to you.

it's a great shot though and really representative of baltimore.

but that's the level they're going for.  the lead story in the first issue deals with revolutionary activity in an unnamed south american country while there's also a story called Scarecrow which is basically a horror story.  It casts a wide net of awesome

Sort of like you hating Borat sight unseen because the odious Miles "Smiles" Trahan was pimping it like crazy?

I just watched an interview with some old redneck ladies talking about how they're gonna vote for Mike Huckabee 'cause they don't want a president who swears at his inauguration using a kohran instead of a bible (referring to Obama as "Osama" too). wtf

THAT is obliviously stupid. :(
