photo question: help, EB!

Okay, so the ASPCA is having a "My Furry Valentine" photo contest thing, and I'm submitting a photo of Melanie. I don't think I'll win anything, but I just think she's awesome and want to share her with the world.

These are the photo requirements:
Photos must be of print quality—minimum 1600 x 1200 pixels, 300dpi, and in JPG file format, please.

The photo I'm submitting is 2176 x 1696 pizels and 2.2MB in size, but how do I determine if it's at least 300dpi? I don't want it disqualified over something stupid like that.

I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Paint Shop Pro 7 at my disposal, if there's something I can do using either of those programs.

dpi = dots per inch

it is the resolution of the image

it should be 300 dpi by default because if you alter the resolution in any way it may end up distorted and pixelated. It is required 300 dpi here because 300dpi is the go to resolution size for printed products like magazines. It's ultra high quality.

Anyways, we have to figure out whether your pic's dpi is 300 in the first place. go to image -> image size and see what the resolution is, i'll tell you where to go from there.

i checked out the resolution for the resized pic and it's 72. i assume the original is 72 as well.

that's only good for posting on the internet, but not good for printing. If you tried to change the resolution now it'd be an ugly blob.

300dpi at 1600x1200?  You should be fine as long as your camera is over 2 megapixels.

But 72dpi is a far cry from 300dpi. That's so strange though because I've printed photos from this camera and they look great!

For all the Photoshop noobs, here's how you change the dpi:
Image>Image Size
Uncheck "Resample Image"

Change the dpi.

dpi is more a printer thing than a picture thing.  If you are over 1.5-2.0mp, the picture is more than good enough to be printed at 300dpi.

Why is screen resolution always specified as 72dpi or 75dpi anyway?
My screen is 85.33 dpi, for example.

I'd like it if computer screens were like 200 dpi. Giant ass resolutions and things could look all silky and smooth.
