Tipping
« on: February 21, 2008, 01:32:13 PM »
So I got into sort of an awkward situation. My friends and I ordered a pizza last week from a local pizza joint, but in the end couldn't come up with enough money to tip the driver. We usually do tip (~$5), but we ran short on cash this time. So we decide to order one today for lunch and I got this comment from the other side of the phone, "Don't forget to tip the driver. We don't like cheap people spending less than what they already have". Wtf?

It kind of caught me by surprise, and I didn't get the chance to reply. I almost don't want to tip the driver after hearing that being said. What do you guys think?

They shouldn't have said that.

That said, I wouldn't order from there again because there's no telling what the driver might do to your food.

I would not order from that place again. Or even eat the pizza that was delivered to you. They absolutely, 100% have done something to it.

Not tipping sucks, but keeping weird records and making veiled threats its worse.

GAS is the reason to tip pizza delivery guy. In most situation he buys his own gas, or if its paid for by the company its still technically out of his pocket. Tip the goddamned delivery guy. Pizza a little late? How the flying fuck do you know its cause of the delivery guy. Maybe its cause you ordered pizza on a night when ever Soccer Mom in town decides to get lazy.

My friend ended up paying by debit. He gave him a $1.90 tip to make the bill $16 even, lol. I heard the delivery guy's voice, and I am sure he's the same guy that spoke with me over the phone. He didn't seem upset when he left.

I think I am going to skip lunch, though. And we're definitely not ordering from that place again.

I usually tip 10% to delivery drivers.  If I'm going out with friends to a restaruant, usually each of us giving $1 makes it a decent tip.  One time my friends and I had between us $0.03 more than the price of the pizza we ordered and we gave that extra to the delivery guy.  He was pissed.

Along this line...I remember having a discussion over tipping with a friend of mine quite a few years ago.

First, we discussed if it's more polite to always tip in cash. Say you have a $30 dollar restaurant bill and you pay with a credit card. Is it more considerate to leave cash for the tip, or is it ok to just include the tip on the credit card? He was saying that when you pay with credit card, the tip is automatically taxed. Where as if it's cash, it's really up to the waiter/ess to claim it as income. Hence, it's more polite to always leave the tip as cash.  ???

Then that lead to a discussion about a scenario where you really don't have enough for a proper tip. Say your bill comes to $28.36 and all you have is $30. He argued that it's more of a slap in a face to leave the $1.64 than just to not leave a tip at all.  He said it was especially bad form to leave any pennies included in the tip. I argued that money is money, and even though I might feel insulted, I'd still rather have some money than none.

Any thoughts?

I don't agree that leaving 'change' is bad form in tipping, as long as it's not all that's there.  I round up on most of my restaurant tabs but I don't just leave 64 cents or whatever, it's like $3.64~

I hadn't thought about the tax issue, that sounds reasonable but I'm not carrying cash just for tips.  If you're in the service industry, you should report at least SOME of your taxable gains just for your own protection.

No, if I want food brought to my house, I'm going to pay the delivery charge and whatever corporate pricing is calculated on each item from that store.

If the guy wants a tip, my pizza won't be an hour old and he won't be a dick.

I mean, I know what you're saying, and I'm a big believer in service tipping, but just him getting the food to your house is a service.

The fact that he's using his own vehicle and gas to do so is what sets it apart.  You can think that the service will continue being offered by paying the 'delivery charge' but the driver rarely sees that.

There will be no driver offering his vehicle under your plan.  You're lucky you're still in the minority.

He rarely sees the delivery charge?  I don't know how it works elsewhere, but at pizza hut I got a 1.25 out of the 1.50 they charged for deliveries along with whatever tips I received.

Sorry, there is a minimum amount of quality I expect to give a tip and I don't think I'm being too strict.  I understand that it's not always their fault which is why I give so much leeway.  and my idea of a regular tip is about 3 dollars on a ~20 dollar order and if they're good, 5-7 dollars.  I don't think that's cheap at all.  And I think for that kind of standard, I'm not asking much.

And this idea that I should put up with a certain amount of bullshit because I want it delivered is only true to a certain extent.  If they tell me 30 minutes and I get it an hour and a half later, that's bullshit no matter what.  I'm not going to say "well at least it was delivered  lolz.  thanks for fucking me on my service."  That's the whole point of Pizza Hut's system of calculating delivery time based on drivers and the amount of orders.  If they just tell me it'll be that late, I'll gladly go pick it up.  But I'm not going to accept being ass fucked simply because your business model is outdated.

and on that note, if they tell me they're busy and it's going to be an hour and a half, that person has no reason not to tip when it shows up an hour and a half later.  if it's on time, that person deserves a tip because that 30 minute timeline is fucking hard to meet most of the time and is pretty unrealistic

I usually tip the delivery guy like 2 bucks, more if it's a really huge order. I'm always nice and everything, too. :)

I tip like 20-25% usually in restaurants, unless I know the waitress or the service is really truly excellent, in which case I tip more.

Yeah, that was the exact point I was going to make about the delivery times, you summed it up perfectly.  They are not under the driver's control and sometimes inexperienced call-centers give incorrect times.

There should not be a tip for a cold pizza that's an hour late, that's never what I was arguing.  I'm arguing against the idiots who say 'hurr it's their job to bring me a pizza, I'm not tipping.'

I wasn't saying that was you.  I'm saying the only reason someone would use their own car to deliver a pizza is the prospect of a tip, not whatever 'delivery charge' they get in addition to their wages.  If everyone stops tipping, no matter what, you can be sure every time you order a pizza it will be a 2 hour delivery time, because there will be very few people using their own vehicles for what amounts to a $7 an hour job.

If I go in a restaurant a lot, I generally give a decent tip because  I don't want them thinking "Oh, there come that prick who never tips, I'm going to take my time getting his refill."

If it's a place I don't go to very often unless they give me really great service, meh, they may get a dollar, they may not depending on what I have in my wallet.
