I miss the more introspective, angst-ridden lyrics and the more exciting pop/rock sound of Rilo Kiely. For the most part, "Acid Tongue" sounds very sparse and repetitive; many of the minimalist ballads just don't to go anywhere. The minimalist sound works at times ("Blacksand," "Pretty Bird," "Acid Tongue," "Sing A Song For Them") and other times it doesn't ("Bad Man's World," "Godspeed," "Trying My Best To Love You"). The more energetic songs are great, but occasionally run too long ("Jack Killed Mom" and especially "The Next Messiah"). Overall, this makes for an uneven album that can get a bit dull.
Malek wants more rock, some angst, and a little swearing.
