Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility.

They have software BC, not hardware BC like the 20 and 60 GB units. Software BC doesn't work with every single title.

Im curious as to why PS2 BC is such a big deal, I already have a PS2 and I assume everyone else does... Is upscaling really that great a feature? PS2 already looks quite good on an HD set

only the ps2 cpu is being software emulated, ps2 gpu is hardware even in the 80gigs so it's like 90% bc

360, Wii, PS2, Dreamcast, N64 (for F-Zero Gx and Mischief Makers) and Megadrive/Sega CD

its going to be a mess, Ive got a nice cabinet that will fit everything inside though

Not really. The PS3's upscaling just makes gives everything a softer look, which removes the jaggies but also make some games too blurry. Also, PS2 games with native 480P rendering look better at 480p than upscaled.

The 40GB models are going to be software backwards compatible at some point, as well. It doesn't really matter. The bundle is a good deal for the extra HD space and copy of Metal Gear Solid 4, though.

20/60 -- 20 was gone by January
60/80 -- 60 was gone by October
80/40 -- 80 is being phased out but apparently will be re-bundled

It's like saying MS has the core, arcade, pro, premium, halo, elite....they aren't all out there at the same time. at least not with official marketing support and such.

Considering how many tard packs are on shelves, 360 customers were a lot smarter than many people expected.

Sony's biggest problem is that the average consumer thinks that the different SKUs just have different hard drives. I can imagine a few people being really upset when their PS3s didn't have the capabilities that

they expected. Most people probably won't bother to return their PS3s but stuff like that causes loyalty to the Playstation brand to dwindle even further.

That's the corporate line, but in retailer reality it's different because the PS3 wasn't selling... they still have 20/40/60 in Japan retail, but they haven't announced the 80 here afaik. I think you can still get 60 in the US if you look for it, can't you?

There were several deals on the Sony website where you could have gotten it for $350 or so and still be eligible for 5 free blu-rays.

Buying a PS3 for $600 at launch is possibly the worst videogame-related purchase I've ever made. :'(

without backward compatability, the ps3 is useless to me. why would i want to keep my ps2 hooked up? i don't have the space for that. i use my ps2 to play ps1 games all the time. if i couldn't do that with the ps3 i'd feel like i wasted all that money on those games that i can't play. and the state of my old ps1 is pretty shabby although i took good care of it. things get old, and when my ps2 does i don't want to have to buy another one when i should be able to use the ps3.

thank christ i own zero xbox games because if i did i'd be pissed about my 360.
