Not really.  I think what made Drinky blast me as a Libertarian on some other forum is that I believe in personal responsibility and not restricting freedoms.  I think the specific instance was when I was lobbying against smoking bans.  The anti-smoker brigrade really irritates me.  The only thing I differ on is moderate, common sense security restrictions, which I think have gone way too far in this new Era of Terror.

I believe in firearm control.  I believe in a woman's right to choose.  I believe homosexuals should have civil unions with equal rights as married couples, but that is up to the state to qualify or disqualify such unions as "marriages" in name only.  I believe in light, moderate control over specific economic interests.  I believe in social services.  I think we should create a health care system accessible to the rest of the country.

Smoking bans are a crock of shit.  A lot of the times, I see exaggerated claims on forums and such that make it sound like a pack of evil smokers run around, blowing their cancer-ridden smoke in people's faces as they flee in terror.  Oh, the humanity.

I don't think that banning smoking in public places, like school institutions is bad.  I think they should create designated smoking areas for those who do smoke, which should be enforced, so that they don't stand outside buildings and smoke.

And I think parents that smoke in their own home with children should be liable for a whole smorgasboard of child endangerment laws.

But when it comes to bars and private establishments, that should be left up to the owner.  And if someone wants to curb their life expectancy by a few years with cigarettes, I say let 'em.

A freedom to smoke is one thing, but nobody should have the right to poison other people's lungs simply because they are unable to kick a stupid habit. Governments prevent businesses from harming their workers and customers with poisons and toxins already, why should the poisons and toxins from cigarettes be any different?

One can be in favor of legalizing drugs and also be in favor of smoking bans. Marijuana smoked in one's apartment does not harm anyone directly. Having to inhale someone else smoke at a bar or restaurant does. Freedoms and rights often conflict with each other and sometimes one person's supposed right has to be curtailed to allow others to enjoy their rights. Your desire to not get run over conflicts with an asshole's desire to run red lights. Who should win out, the one doing harm or the one who is not?

Except, in my specific argument stated, nobody is filling up anyone's lungs with evil second hand smoke (which, by the way, is just as foul, if less so, than a lot of other carcinogens that nobody cares about).  If you want to go to a bar that allows smoking, that's your own risk.  A person that runs a privately owned establishment shouldn't be forced to bend to what you want, especially in regards to a legal substance, albeit harmful.

How many bars were smoke free before smoking was banned in these places in Ontario and Quebec? None that I knew of. So where was my freedom to go to a bar that did not allow smoking? No they can't.  Not when all indoor smoking is banned.  Clubs are either grandfathered in or it is difficult/impossible to get permits.  

Here in Seattle, all new indoor smoking establishments have to get a pricey permit, and they are BARRED from serving food and liquor.  So a lot of hookah clubs have popped up over the past year, but you can't get wasted in them.

Same goes for restaurants.

Anti-smoking activists do overreach in their arguments, and I'm sure tobacco addicts feel like they're being persecuted.  On the other hand, if I can be fined for turning on my boombox and dropping lyrical bombs on the table next to me, why not do the same with second-hand smoke, which is a pain even without any carcinogens?

They're open to the public, but they're still private property.  They should set their own rules concerning smoking.

Like I said, if there were demand for non-smoking bars, they'd exist.  I don't smoke, but I do believe that smoke is part of barroom ambiance.  You get what you want, I can't get what I want.


Also, The private club/restricted membership thing isn't true in all areas where such laws are instituted.  I just told you that such clubs are grandfathered in here.
