That didn't really bug me so much. It wasn't as bad as, say, the exposition-rific end of The Prestige. It probably didn't bug me because it was a short lil thing.

I like how it captures the period flavor more than anything else, and the performances by the various actors are uniformly nice. It's a lousy script.

Cate Blanchett gave a really damn good performance too. And Kate Beckinsale was OMG.

Yeah, this movie surprised the hell outta me one day when I watched it on tv. Seeing it in theaters or on Blu-Ray (the highest resolution device in my house is 1024x768, is 14 inches, and is from 1997) would be glorious.

and Cajole dude, Hong Kong cinema is worlds apart from Japanese cinema. We can all agree that Ichirou is a Japa-eff, that doesn't mean that he's automatically a fan of any sort of Chinese cinema. Hell, most Japafags can't even tell the multiple Tony Leungs apart. That Ichi-boy there prefers Infernal Affairs to The Departed is only a sign of his good taste and nothing more.

I loved the special effects. I can't think of many movies that used CG in such an organic manner, and the fucking with the coloring stuff looked awesome, too. It's a really gorgeous movie visually.

I like it a lot. Flying sequences are ace, Leo is miscast but does a helluva job anyway, the movie does a really great job of capturing the period...really, the only bad point is the formulaic script, but then, it's by John Logan, who is famous for sucking.

I own it on DVD.

And yes, Cajole. Infernal Affairs is better than The Aviator, which is better than The Departed. Why does saying that instantly make me an asiafag?

It helps, it really helps, that Leo looks the part of a 1930's-40's leading man, even now I struggle to think of any movie that used Leo better then The Aviator did. The casting is top-to-down fecking impeccable, any movie that can get a good performance out of today's Kate Beckinsdale deserves some props.

Also, I claim the apparently vacant spot of Evilbore's Chinese/Hong Kong (yes there is a difference between Chinese and Hong Kong cinema) movie expert.

If you watch the actual footage of Hughes when he was at that hearing at the end of the movie, Leo totally nails his voice. Some of the footage is in the 9 minute long F for Fake trailer.

Posting this because I love whoring F for Fake because it is such a bizarre movie. And it might have the tighest editing evar

Being better than the departed isn't saying much though.

I'd like this much more if they didn't try to fit a happy ending. Cause as most of you know, Hughes went into conclusion and died a very unhappy man. They could have shown the changing times and how Hughes started to look and feel obsolete and they could have still kept all of the awesome scenes that show the lifestyle of pre-WW2 America. Would have made a much better movie imo.

i think i disagree with evilbore across the board here

i don't like the aviator much. it's one of those scorsese movies that strains towards importance. and in the aviator's particular case, it bowdlerizes hughes' story in the process. both his talent and his madness were much weirder than the movie suggests. and i think kate beckinsale as ava gardner was a poor piece of stunt casting. one hopes that she had to suck marty's dick.

the departed is much better. at root it's a b-movie, but working on that kind of material let scorsese drop a lot of baggage, and it comes closer to the kind of energy that makes goodfellas so irresistible -- even now that i'm older and am no longer fascinated with violent criminals. it's an interesting companion piece to infernal affairs...i'm not sure which i prefer. it loses the original movie's geometric arrangement and clarity of theme, but gains a lot of interesting character stuff

on that note, i find matt damon's character more interesting than dicaprio's -- but what's fascinating is to watch him rot away morally behind a mask that looks and acts like matt damon, and i'm not sure if this entails much of a performance

He goes from sounding believable to having a cartoon-like affectation on a random basis. It is probably the most inconsistent movie accent in a big picture since Keanu in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
