SO, I'm starting a new job next Monday as "Marketing Assistant", which I presume means "Do everything we can't/wont' do". It's a nice position, a good starter gig at a small gourmet food company that's undergoing a lot of growth, so it's a nice growth opportunity. The pay is a bit slight (25k), but it's roughly more than twice what I've ever made before.

I realize the second part of this Q is a touchy subject, so feel free to omit.

I'm unemployed. Full time student

But my question to you: what requirements did you need to get that job?

this is hilarious, if only because two weeks ago, you couldn't pay me enough to stay at this job--and then they did.

For an entry level position that sounds about right range, Gillo D.  I get paid decently, but I still worry about money, retirement, home ownership all the time.  Where do you live, Gillo D?  Metro areas usually have very high cost of living.

I work as a gate monitor/dispatcher/clerk/ at a car plant and make $30,000 (not including overtime) with health and dental benefits. I really only work two days a week as there isn't much to do on weekends.

A few weeks ago, a poster on GAF claimed that you'd have to be greedy not to be satisfied with $25k. But I really don't think a person can live alone on that salary, especially if they live in a big expensive city.

It's NYC. I know everyone else at the company is very well compensated, so I presume that if I stay on board and don't fuck up too bad, there'll be a raise in the future. Like I said, business is booming and we'll be moving to a new office that's about 10x the size in the middle of next year, so.

PD: I was an English/Philosophy major in college. I worked in food/food service for the last year, behind the counter and in various minor league managerial roles. I actually applied to work in the small restaurant this company also runs and when the guy saw my resume he offered me something higher up.

My wife and I got by VERY well on about 15k last year. It's just about trimming expenses and smart planning: I always had a menu for the week so we didn't end up with a lot of food waste. We biked or walked almost everywhere, so as to avoid the price of gas. I used Gamefly and Netflix instead of paying outright for a game and on the rare occasions when I did buy a title (Orange Box), I sold it when I was finished instead of letting in linger. We got a great deal on an HDTV at a pawn shop and stopped in there every weekend to see what was new. We actually got some great wireless headphones that retail for 150$ for 15$. Frequented farmer's markets, used the library instead of Amazon, bought used whenever possible.

NYC is really expensive, but once you get past rent, it's really not impossible to find good deals.

A lot of my co-workers have to work 50 to 60 hour weeks at a boring, dead-end job just to scrape by. I'm glad I'm not in their shoes.

What are your school debts like?

It is difficult to get around the Toronto suburbs and exburbs by walking, riding a bike, or taking public transit. The housing prices are insane. Rents are terrible, expect if you get lucky or are willing to live in a shitty neighborhood. I can't see someone going it alone for $25k.

I have 0$ in debt, my wife has about 40k. We make a 600$ payment on it, we split that 50/50. We have no other debts and tend to only buy what we can afford, but it's a real shame. One of the loans is at 11 fucking percent.

I'm pretty well compensated for a job that doesn't take a lot of technical knowledge but just requires giving up your life to finish.  Seriously, I haven't felt challenged and don't feel I've learned anything here in the past 6 years.  The only difficulty comes in volume of work and being able to keep yourself motivated to do it and do it well.

I'll be graduating within a year and am undecided if I'll move onto my field of study (Accounting) or sit this job out while working on my Masters.  Part of me wants to face the new challenge and build more knowledge in accounting, but the other part of me knows I can't give up what I earn here (about 65k annually) until I'm really confident I'll be successful somewhere else.  So, I'll probably just wallow around in this place until I get my Masters in 3 or so years and take a pay cut when I become a CPA.

:(

Yup once I graduate I'll be able to use my accounting degree immediately while working on my MBA.

I can live on $25k, but I wanna make tons of money because I HATE WORKING and I'd like to save up, retire early and spend the rest of my life working on open source projects and reading research papers 24/7.

I work in computer forensics.  Until recently I made fuck all, now I make 2 * fuck all, which is still fuck all.  For a while my time was billed to the clients at $150/hour though!

Yeah, GTA living is not cheap.  Lower Mainland BC is apparently worse.

Are you still trying to get into law school?

Anywho, as for me, I have no problem revealing what I make, since it's public record.

As if everybody doesn't already know, I'm a constable in the RCMP.  My salary right now is 44.5k/year, but in six months I will get a raise to 57k, and within three years I will be making 72k/year (probably more, since we're in the middle of negotiating a new contract, and will likely get a nice raise by then)

I make about $33k a year as a general IT help desk staffer.

Id like to try and buy a home in the fall, so I'm looking into picking up a second part-time job for the weekend soon, and I'm going to try to do more computer repair for people at night as well.

We'll see how that goes.

Currently: $9.50/hr doing fuck all.  It consists mostly of putting labels on packages of food while standing in one spot.  The upside is that since I stand in one spot, it gives me a legitimate chance to ogle the nubile young college girls that walk by and shop for goods.  The downside is that the uniform I wear makes me look stupid, limiting my looks to simply looking.  Sometimes I just wear a nice shirt, tie, and slacks and I tend to get away with it as long as management is not around.

This summer, I'll be interning for a power company for $17.25/hr updating its natural gas network using AutoCAD.  Mostly just verifying if valves are where they say they are, checking 400-500 small stations (getting paid 49 cents a mile to drive on top of pay) and making sure it is all up to date.  I'm told it will be boring work but for $17.25/hr as a college student plus driving compensation, I'm more than happy to work at this job.

Work for my dad who's a structural engineer.  I answer the phones and order supplies but I also have been working with AutoCAD now for a couple of years as a draftsman.  I get $575 a week after taxes.  I'll soon be going back to school to study music and recording (I've heard it's super hard to get into that business so I might wind up working with computers, my other love.)  :-*
