What are you actually getting for $deltaA[0]? The empty string, maybe? I don't have Perl on this computer and the documentation for the DateManip module is a bit vague, but my guess is that when the dates are the same the delta string doesn't actually feature a sign, so you're just chopping off the zero itself.
