I went to download some songs by an artist I haven't heard anything from before, Bob Dylan, a.k.a. "the Voice of a Generation." But the RIAA has flooded the trackers so that anyone who tries to download a Dylan song instead gets some whiny, nasal, repetitive and banal nonsense by an atonal beatnik.

With Cohen I'd say start with his first four albums (Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, Songs of Love and Hate, New Skin for Old Ceremony) and then check out his revival stuff in the 80s (like I'm Your Man, Various Positions, The Future).

An important thing to remember about Cohen is that he's a poet by trade, so venturing into music was more of a way to expose his poetry to a world that really was no longer interested in poetry; it was an adoption of a form with rough congruence to his own trade.

His later stuff is somewhat easier to get into (he adopted synthesizers and the like--adopting the form of pop music meant that he had to at least pay lip service in keeping up with the times), but I've found that his later music is more appreciated if you know where he came from earlier.

Oh his album with Phil Spector is pretty interesting, if not very representative of the rest of Cohen's output.

Dylan is the most overrated musical artist in the history of recorded sound. I'm sorry Brand New, but he can't sing, he's not particularly talented with any instruments, his albums are not impressive on any level outside of song writing, and nearly every single cover of his music is better than the original.

The Stones wish they could reach Dylan's heights. They were good and all, but there were far better bands that emerged from the British Invasion. If you seriously think the Stones' version of Like a Rolling Stone is better...well then, I think that just settles this argument right there.

Jimi was a guitar player though and through. He couldn't really write a full song, he could only take a standard blues song and fuck it to awesome levels with his distortion and acidy blues riffs. He's awesome, but in a totally different way. Yeah, All Along the Watchtower is better for him than Dylan. Dylan's even admitted that himself.

In terms of other covers that are good, try some of Cat Power's. Paths of Victory and Memphis Blues Again are pretty good. Both of Dylan's are better, but she puts a cool spin on them.

It's disappointing to know that there are actually people out there who deny is talent, but whatever. At least you like a few songs of his, which is all I ask of anyone.

Well, that has to do with Phil Spector not letting Leonard redo vocals. I don't think the vocals are that terrible--definitely the worst in the Cohen library--but I do like the sound of the music.

Cohen's songwriting is only passable on the strength of his lyricism, which is undeniably greater than Dylan's. Cohen's later synth stuff feels a bit dated these days, in my opinion, although it does wonders in seperating him from the rest of the singer/songwriter poet crowd. I think I like Death of a Ladies Man better than anything he recorded in the 80's and beyond.

I'm just NOW getting into Cohen, and he's undeniably great, yeah. I have to get some of the albums TVC mentioned, but I'd wager that I'm already at the point where nothing in modern music history can top Dylan's career from 1964-66. Four of some of the best albums ever. Blodne on Blonde.

I'm excited to get into Cohen more though.

I like the synths. I like the Moroder-y synths on First We Take Manhattan most, and those are arguably the most dated.

Honestly, I'm not sure dated is the right word for songs that use old synthesizers. Yes, they are dated in that they are using equipment that is old to us, but old synths have a style all of their own. I'd accept calling them "dated" if the term didn't have a negative connotation.
