Warhawk: Not very good
« on: April 13, 2008, 10:53:20 PM »
I decided to see if my PlayStation 3 was still capable of playing discs other than DVDs and Blu-Rays, so I checked out Warhawk.  Theoretically, I should love it, as I'm a pretty big fan of shooters and Battlefield gives me an erection.  But I hate it.  The art direction is pretty awful, the vehicles control like shit and why the fuck is this third-person?  Argh!  I just want to love you PS3 library, why won't you let me?

the ps1 game rocked. i lost interest in the ps3 game when it went multi-only -- i can never tell if i'm going to get into a multiplayer game, so i really need singleplayer to fall back on

Which version are you playing?

Uh, the PS3 version.

Cohen, the actual Warhawks don't control too poorly, but some of the button mapping on other vehicles are distinguished mentally-challenged.  And the triggers make driving and shooting feel totally awkward.  I really don't understand the third-person view and while the maps are large, it is really, really difficult to make out enemies at long distances.

First-person view really would suit this game better.  I guess they wanted to do something to separate themselves from the competition, but all we got were two boring character model types and controls that are more like a FPS than a third person action/shooter.  You have to play around with the controls and find the right control scheme for you (get rid of the motion controls, stat!), and once you get used to them, the controls do the job nicely.  The Warhawks themselves are a joy to fly around with.  I think the game makes for a better Battlefield-style experience than Battlefield 2 on the 360 did, but in the end there are better shooters out there.  It's nice to have the game on the HDD and mess around with it on occasion, plus it has more players online (a LOT more players) at any given time unlike say, UT3.

Oh, and the DLC is pretty damn cool.

Needs to be first-person, period.   I've always had a problem with 3rd person multiplayer games and Warhawk is no different. Ground combat feels so completely off and clunky that it really becomes a chore if you don't find yourself a plane.

Don't care for Warhawk at all.....I really wish I could've tried a demo of the thing before I plunked down the money for it.

I like it but it's just too chaotic with horrible third person controls. I'd play it more often if I didn't have a console with a decent selection of games.

I don't like that you can't seem to do a melee attack without having to select a knife or wrench first.  That's lame.

It WAS fun to go into an enemy territory in a CTF game, hide, and just knife the shit out everyone...one hit kills!

Why have I had to update Warhawk 3 times in the two weeks I've had it, and PSN twice in the same timespan? And why does it take 10x+ longer than a game update for 360? Fuck this is annoying, I just want to test out my headset.

Do I have to manually connect the headset in the PS3 menu before starting any online game?
