Who designed this?  It's a multiplayer tactical shooter with some of the worst controls ever.  It's slow and sucks.  Honestly, it feels as crippling in terms of multiplayer controls as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.  It plays almost exactly like Portable Ops, horrible damage physics and all.  This blows.

This game is so awful, I probably COULD make a better shooter with shitty freeware PC tools and that's just sad.

:yuck

MGS:PO is the first MGS game that I didn't play to completion.  It was mostly the PSP's fault though.  I don't see how MGO can play this bad with 2 analog sticks.

The Fake Shemp

Yeah, instead of fighting the camera (which, by the way, YOU STILL DO!), you spend most of your time fighting the controls.  In most games made after 2000, a simple press of a button will swap to a sidearm or throw a grenade.  But in the amazing world of Metal Gear Online, you must go through a Mass Effect-type inventory to select your weapon (although you may cycle through your ENTIRE INVENTORY by pressing R2 lightly - pressing too hard will be bring up the whole thing), then equip it and fire.  So to throw a grenade, you go through the inventory menu, select grenade, throw it, go through your inventory again, select your main firearm and engage.

If you die in the middle of this - don't worry, it's normal!

Is there at least a "last weapon" key like Half-life 2?  That's pretty disappointing to hear that the weapon selection hasn't been changed much from the PS2 games.  Shane B from 1up was going on about how the controls are way more intuitive now.  Fucking liar.

there is a last weapon key in mgs games.

I remember there's a quick-arm key to switch from unarmed combat to guns.  I'm not sure if there's a key to switch back to the last weapon though.

quick press R1 (don't hold) that should select last weapon used.

I love MGS, but I could never understand the love for the online versions, which started with MGS3.  The control is clunky and the game is just not fun.  I don't get the hype honestly.

The Fake Shemp

quick press R1 (don't hold) that should select last weapon used.

The triggers don't even work effectively.  Otherwise, hitting R1 does melee damage or fires if you have aim on.  Headshots are impossible unless you go into first-person view and that's just a hassle.

What an awful multiplayer game.

Also, what total and complete bullshit that we have to not only go through multiple delays, two patches (before we can even login), registering a PSN account and then registering a separate Konami ID account to play this beta - and it fucking blows.

I'm still going to get Metal Gear Solid 4, but I'm really irked! :maf

I also learned the controls.  It did not stop them from being horribly clunky and awful.  Saying that this game handles well or has optimized controls is a slap in the face to real gamers.  Maybe because I expect modern game design in my modern games makes me crazy, I dunno!

The controls are poor for a multiplayer game. Like the original MGO. They basically did the same thing. Streamlined the controls for the singleplayer and shoe-horned them into  multiplayer.

I just played through all three MGS games in the past month though, so I'm fine with the controls. They are more comfortable here than in MGS3.
It's clear that the controls suck for run n' gun showdowns, which is how everybody is playing it right now...that's right, it's not the controls, it's how people are playing.  :lol  People aren't even communicating all that much yet...it's clearly day 1 of a new game. The later days of MGS3 online were fun because you had people who were smart about laying low and toasting guys who tried to play it like it's fucking Quake 3 Arena.  I find the more cautiously I play, the better I do.  That includes using cover, popping out to shoot, playing dead, laying traps, sneaking up on guys, etc.

I'm not 100% sold on MGO yet.  I hope they do miraculously fix the frame rate somehow, but it's not bad so far.

It's pretty terrible alright. I guess once you get the hang of everything there might be a fun MP game there, but  honestly can't be bothered learning the ropes. I don't mind technical shooters, but this is just not intuitive, and at this point totally not fun to play.

AdmiralViscen

Warhawk is a blast, but the weapon selection is MINDNUMBLINGLY STUPID.

Let's take a wicked fast, slick game, and make you manually pick weapons with the dpad. While standing still. At least if they'd made you use R3 and pivot with the right stick to pick, you could still dance around and not die.

I just use the pistol 90% of the time when I'm on foot. And if I don't play the game for a week I forget where all the weapons are in the square.

duckman2000

  • A lot of shit pisses me off
  • Senior Member
That's true, I remember griping quite a bit about that in the beta days. Can't say I agree that it's worse than here. At least in Warhawk, you don't actually have to go scrolling in menus. Makes you really appreciate when other developers get it right though. And really, there's a good reason as to why most games that focus on utilizing weapons have moved away from the walking armory model.

It's not bad but it's not good either. The palette does it no favours. The lighting is great at times but shitty at others.

This would be a good game in 2004. Standards have changed. Seems like the fans of MGO have never played another online team based shooter.

I still play UT2004 cuz it rocks

And more people play it than UT3  :'(

Visuals get the job done, Pace is a bit slower and more deliberate than something like team fortress of half life, i like it because its different, and with the right people, awesome fun.

As far as the controls go, you only have at most 3 weapons to cycle from, one primary, one secondary, and grenade, knife doesnt cycle. so its max 2 clicks to get to the toy you want to use.  Items are a bit different because you can pick up barrels and some other stuff.

I had a lot of fun using the grenades that let you spot people behind walls and stuff, then rushing in from behind and CQC followed by an auto aim kill while they are on the ground.

SOP is really neat, and when you get smart players actually using it, the game becomes a blast.

Controls took a bit of getting used too, but once you get the hang of switching on and off auto aim at the right times, it becomes a lot more fun.

I'm going to enjoy playing this, heres hoping its up for more than a year this time.

Now I'm used to the controls (two buttons to SHOOT? fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow jap developers :japcry), the Konami ID bullshit and the ridiculously slow pace it's actually pretty fun. Fun that I would spend money on it? Hell no, the gameplay design is so archaic for squad based shooters that I'd be livid had I paid for this. However for a free beta I'm enjoying it and there's the basics of a good squad shooter.

Graphics aren't anything amazing either, yes there's some nice lighting. Some of the animations are ok I guess but it's leagues behind something like R6 Vegas.

I'm not using auto-aim, should I be? And whats SOP?

How much will the full game cost.  I'm not buying it. I'm just curious.  I can't imagine anyone speeding more the 30 dollars on the game.  They should just do the same thing they did with MGS3 and pack it in.  But, Kojima had to fill up an entire blu-ray.
